Both are right

I own a 1968 that is mostly original and numbers matching, including the TH400 auto tranny. Not a Four on the Floor. But it does have a 400 Big Block.
4-400
4-four barrel
2-dual exhaust

They are not both right.

It originally stood for 4 speed, 4 barrel, dual exhausts. When it came out in 1964, there were no 400 cube 442's. Just 330's. She is right.

Re: 442 question

in 1964 the 442 stood for 4BBL, 4spd dual exhaust as the car only came with 4 speed manual. In 65 the 400ci V8 was introduced with auto trans option. During that year through 69 the 442 stood for 400 ciV8, 4BBl carb and dual exhaust. The 442 changed with introduction in 70 with the 455. Soon after the 442 was only an option package on the Cutlass models.
