still waiting for our full fixtures ~ playing the unibond fitures jigsaw competition at the moment. we obviously start the season away (like everyone else we hope it's colwyn bay) but what a cracking first home saturday fixture, bring on the celts.
have a good season everyone, can't wait......
A now normal midweek trip to Blyth - I am getting used to be home for 4 in the morning
And it would not seem the same without going to Barrow for the first game, and Gainsborough at Home for the second. Who needs a computer to do the fixtures, just photo copy last seasons...!
Be fair Luke, we came to you on the friday night before Xmas last season....and we had Heed away on a Wednesday (terrible game), and Blyth was a midday kickoff.
This year we have Harrogate away on a Tuesday night.
Can't please all the people all the time I suppose.
You cant have your cake and eat it - not in the Unibond. Where would you rather go on a Tuesday night - Barrow - two hours tops (less if you put your foot down and dont drive a f*****g caravan) or Blyth, Gateshead, Whitby?
If they made all your local Manchester derbies on a Tuesday night to free up Saturdays for coming to Barrow and the like, you'd all be complaining that you'd get better crowds for a Saturday derby than a Tuesday night.
But I for one can't afford to get back home at 11:30pm midweek. I can afford to get back home on a weekend at 7:30pm.
However, I see your point - and I'm being a bit selfish. It's just a shame we can't reduce the number of midweek games. Every team gets a Saturday off - now why was that again Barrow fans? - why not give them a midweek night off instead... One more inscrutable aspect of the NPL fixture list.
If the season was extended into May by a fortnight, we'd get two more games in there - and after all, how many teams at this level are going to be in the FA Cup final? Scrap the 'free' saturday (whose idea was that?) and we'd get another. 3 more Saturdays, by my calculations would give enough game space. Cup games could then be midweek without fear of clashes.
Too simple?
That could be a description of me...
Iain.
P.S. Obviously EVERYBODY would have to play regardless of the condition of the pitch or the weather, otherwise the whole system breaks down.
There is nothing with going up to Barrow on a Tuesday night it's just usually on a Tuesday night we have localish games like Droylsden, Marine, Runcorn that sort of thing we have Runcorn away on a Saturday why can;t that be a long distance game on a Saturday? Like Iain from Bridge said I don't mind a long distance game on a Saturday becuase you can take your time getting home and you don;t have to get up in the morning, wheras a midweek game you have to rush home for work in the morning.
Anyway if we were in the conference we would have long distance away midweek trip as Iain will testify after Bridge games last season anyway I will have to give it a go.
At least we can have some debate on here at last now that the fixtures are out.
For the 542nd time.....yes it was an arse of a situation but we had been 'relegated' by the Conference, not expelled etc. When you get relegated you normally go into the league below, do you not?
Duncan et al objected about having us foisted upon his league which is fair enough but at the end of the day it was a compromise brokered by the FA (who realised we had been shat on from a great height by the management of the Conference)so blame them or, more importantly, the Conference management committee.
Anyway, there was 23 teams in the League a few years back after Runcorn got relegated from the Conference and no-one seemed to mind that much.
Looking forward to going to the Bower Fold, whether it be Saturday afternoon, Tuesday night, Thursday morning etc etc.
Some of you might have noticed that Emley are changing from Monday night to Tuesday.
Apparently Wakefield Wildcats and Emley are renting the Belle Vue ground to Leeds Utd reserves for their games and splitting the income.
Personally I thought Monday was best because there are less important Premier League games on Monday on Sky. and no other fotball of note (except Hyde)
Tuesdays have European soccer on the box and many other league and non league games. Mind you, our crowds(?) couldn't get smaller could they?.
It will be interesting to see if the name change will attract more support from Wakefield or will we lose even more support from the Huddersfield area?
Neither Huddersfield Examiner nor the Wakefield Express have picked up on the fixtures yet nor the name change!
It is only due to sites like this that we get to know anything!
More news on the Emley midweek switch to Tuesdays from Mondays.
Apparently the Leeds Utd Reserves are playing on Tuesday nights as well as Emley.
My list of Tuesday games at Belle Vue is as follows
Leeds Res v Blackburn Tues Aug 2oth
Ashton Utd Tues Sep 3rd
Altrincham Tues Sep 10th
Leeds Res v Sheff Wed Tues Sep 19th
Blyth S Tues Sep 24th
Gateshead Tues Oct 8th

Whitby T Tues Nov 5th
Hyde U Tues Nov 12th
Leeds Res v Man City Tues Nov 19th
Possible problem here this is midweek when Unibond Chall Cup 2nd Rd (which we have a bye to) is played - we could be drawn at home (or more likeley Barrow away?)
Leeds Res v Man Utd Tues Dec 10th
Possible problem here this is midweek when Unibond Chall Cup 3rd Rd is played - we could be drawn at home if we progress (or more likeley Barrow away?)

The point that was made at a Shareholders meeting is that we get a cut of the gate receipts ... 2500 were their vs Blackburn .. approx 1700 paid £3.
And in early season Tuesday night would be football (soccer not rugby?) at Belle Vue.. so people would get used to going regularly (Emley, Leeds, Emley etc).
My view was that I can see the Wakefield public, predominantly egg chasers, might turn out to see players who are in the Premier Lge first team squad if it is only £3 .. but are they likely to pay £6 the previous Saturday or following Tuesday to see a Unibond game?
I think not. It could be counter productive in trying to get Wakey public to watch us (especially if we continue to struggle to score) when they can watch better players for 50% of the cost.
Would be interested in what other supporters of clubs who host Premier Lge club's Reserves fixtures think of this.
