Woah, don't talk it up too much! Best attack in teh league vs the best defence... however not quite the best defence as we're missing Steve Kennedy through suspension tonight which is an absolute hammer blow for us as he's been fantastic this season.

It should be interesting though and I think Belper will be a lot more attacking than they have been all season.

Belper 2 Alfreton 5

October 9 2002, 8:53 AM

Attacking--oh zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. just like your fans last night from the off- The casual observer would have though Alfreton were at HOME not Belper! Great first half- but no guts from belper-How did they go to 3rd? Our fans are great and were verbal and supportive from the off.And I cannot imagine this post being delated, unlike on your website where any adverse comment is deleated- can't stand the truth- On the Alfreton website we allow free speech within bounds of the HRA 1998- suggets belper do too and not hide the truth. And the truth is that your palyers and fans should be ashamed this morning .

ashamed?

October 9 2002, 12:51 PM

I don't quite agree that Belper should be ashamed, redfan. No club in the league could have lived with that first half performance from Alfreton. One thing Belper should worry about - one man missing and they collapse. We've had five and six players out at a go, and have just kept on going. If one man makes your team, Joey, you've got mega problems.

You live in the past seasider-In any case that was a very few idiots. Come to our ground and see for yourself and do not prejudge on what happened some years ago!On the fans and players being ashamed of not even trying to give alfreton a game and after all the build up they are- look at the website

Correction for seasider

October 9 2002, 6:22 PM

The Alfreton fans you refer too would have run a mile if anyone had shouted BOO!!!

For the record:

Although the Reds subsequently plummetted, Lancaster and Alfreton were promoted the same season therefore they could not have met when Lancaster were being promoted and Alfreton were being relegated.

That said I always enjoyed my trips to Lancaster - a good day out - and look forward to being there again soon.

Suspect Alfreton Fans of the Dim & Distant

October 10 2002, 12:54 AM

I'm said part-time Lancaster supporting mate of Craigo.

That lot had a funny way of showing their cowardice - charging round the ground at us because we were winning about 6-1, and only stopped because they were threatened by a lifetime ban by club officials!

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that this behaviour is no longer a part of ATFC though I have to say there was an unpleasant bunch in the Dolly Blue Tavern at the Giant Axe earlier in that season as well.

I've never been threatened and sworn at, at any Non-League game before or since.

Anyway, as I say benefit of the doubt.....

On a happier note, do you remember the incident a couple of years later against City when it got very foggy late on in the game (Sat pm), and you couldn't see either end of the ground?

We won a corner, but had already pre-determined that any ball going out of play would be greeted as though it were a goal to try and "trick" the other end of the ground.

Took a while for the corner to be taken as the players were laughing so much!

Go on be honest, I think the game finished 1-1, but did anybody go home thinking that City had grabbed a late winner?

Alfreton fans

October 10 2002, 8:42 AM

It's true that in those days Alfreton fans had a dreadful reputation and did have a few 'nutters'. These days the fan base is just as big and just as vocal as before, but they concentrate on supporting the team rather than swearing at the opposition. The change is down to the chairman, who is held in such high regard by everyone here that all he had to do was ask for the swearing etc to stop, and it did. Clubs nowadays tell us they wish they had support like ours - and that wasn't always the case, I must admit.

For instance

October 10 2002, 4:10 PM

At the Belper match a belper fan went right through the alfreton fans behind the goal- A few sesons ago he would have been strung up on the scaffolding behind the
fans, by his scarf! As gordon said, the Chairman after a big debate and deluge of compalints on the internet site as well as through the mail, asked fans to cut out the bad language and foul abuse. It has lessened but as anyone knows it cannot be cut out completely. Most of the nutters have gone or calmed down and our chairman has threaten Bans for any fan who makes trouble- that is, he has Promised bans- and rightly so too. Our fan base now is high and at belper the other night it was inspiring to Alfreton Players but awe inspiring to the Belper Fans and Players to quotse Gordon's words on the Alfreton Website.Over 250 fans went out of a gate of 605!

Try it in 10 mins and Mr Plod will soon send you a nice slip of paper with your name on asking for a handout! When matlock played at alfreton we didn't get many from there and that is not far- it is even on a direct bus route to Alfreton - Belper is not.

Hello Goose

October 11 2002, 8:57 PM

Yes, Goose it is Nott'm Bob - see you at Frickley, tomorrow mate!

Along with Craigo AKA the cunningly disguised Jestercat.

Anyway, Alfreton lads pleased to hear about the apparent change in Behavioural pattern! I usually look out for all the local sides in a positive way, but have to admit since our experiences in the mid-late 90's, while I've continued to look out for your results, it's usually been in the hope that you'd slip up!

I was rarely disappointed for several years!

Perhaps I'll pop along to a game soon, particularly as you are doing so well on the field and with your attendances, and if things have changed as you say, can then genuinely hope you're back in the Premier with Lancaster and Whitby next year.

Any games coming up that you recommend?

Reds at home

October 12 2002, 10:52 AM

Alfreton are at home to Rossendale on Tuesday night (7.45) - if it's anything like the game up there three Tuesdays ago it should be a cracker. They gave us a tremendous game before we won 4-3. Nice people too.
