Steelers to replace Ayr in Continental Cup?

If the Star is right and Ayr are no more, and there is to be a team play out of Glasgow, then surely they cannot have a place in Europe as Ayr qualified and not a Glasgow team.

In which case as 3rd place in the league and Playoff Champions will the Sheffield Steelers be offered the place?

Wishful Thinking!

Wishful thinking my friend! Just because they are moving doesn't mean they are a different team, they are still the Scottish Eagles and still owned by Bill Barr. We moved from LPS to the NIC (admittedly within the same city) but we are still the same club the Panthers. The move means nothing they should still qualify, why should they be punished for moving arenas?

It's possible...

...to say we might not even want to enter the comptetition. It has been mentioned before that the costs etc are a factor in this.

True..true..

on the thread way below, this was the reason that Uncle Nort turned it down last season..
However it is a moot point as the Eagles qualified for this and we didnt..

End of story..lets just wish whatever team plays in the CC cup all the best as representing GB...I'm sure the Eagles and the Giants will do us proud..

Dream on

The ISL team has been the Scottish Eagles since season 2 of ISL. The Scottish Eagles finished 2nd in the league and will represent the ISL in the Continental Cup. Its the same team just playing out of another rink.

The question is.....

July 7 2002, 9:30 AM

Do the supporters still see it as the same team and will they continue to travel down from Ayr?

Personally, I think this is terrible news, Ayr have built up a dedicated and loyal fan base over the last few years and now they're being slapped in the face as far as I'm concerned.

It would have been nice to see BOTH arenas used for ISL hockey, then you could have built up a real good rivalry to match Sheff v Notts and Sheff v Manch. Still, I guess finances dictated that was never going to happen.

Good luck to all the supporters in Ayr, many must be feeling gutted at this moment in time . I guess most Ayr fans don't give a damn who plays in Europe, they're probably more concerned about losing there team.

Regards

Doom

It's like the old axe in the Tower of London

July 7 2002, 4:53 AM

It's had a new handle and it's had a new head but it's still the original axe.

They'll have a new team, playing from a new rink in a new town with a new name but it's still the original team if only to keep the Steeler out.

NL will be happy at this because it means that he doesn't have to take the financial hit.

NOW if someone decided that they didn't want to play in Europe then we would see some rule being rediscovered to keep them out - like a new headlight on the Zamboni machine meaning it's not the same team etc.

All said in fun because our friends North of the Border need all the support they can at the moment so let's give them it - if only in spirit at this moment in time.

It may be a good thing to raise the profile of the new team (sorry old team) in Glasgow from the start.
