An article in today's (12/23/13) Times Herald-Record is saying that it's likely WGHQ, Kingston, NY will sign off for good by 1/1/14. WGHQ is on 920 AM, and has been there since 1955. There's no comment yet from the owner, Pamal, but a community group that leases boatloads of time on the station was given that news last Friday (12/20/13). The article says it costs around $3200/month to keep WGHQ on the air. That's not actually bad....about a Benjamin a day. Of course there are probably no people there anymore, so it's no wonder it can be run that cheaply. But WGHQ is in Ulster County. I would venture a guess that it costs Polnet more than $100 a day to keep WRKL on the air with Radio Ted. Ted's a computer.
It's sad. But then I think about that $3 million asking price for WRKL, and I can't stop laughing.
R.I.P. WGHQ/920AM 1955-2013(?)
Not sure if this will work for very long, but this is a link to that online article:
