The original population was Armenian. Georgian sources do not mention the area before the late eighth century. The area got partly depopulated due to Arab invasions and epidemics. This set the stage for a Georgian influx in the early ninth century. After that, the population was mixed, including Chalcedonian Armenians and Georgians.
The first church (seventh century) built at Ishkhan was Armenian. The later structure is Georgian, but the fact that there are Armenian inscriptions next to the Georgian ones points to the continued Armenian presence in the region.
