ANI CATHEDRAL JUBILEE MARKED
YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 23, ARMENPRESS: In 2001, when Armenia was marking
the 17 centuries of conversion to Christianity, there was another
major jubilee in that year, more particularly, the 1000-th
anniversary of consecration of the Mother Cathedral in Ani, one of
the capitals of the mediaeval Armenia, but its celebration was
decided to suspend for one year to focus on the Christianity jubilee.
The Cathedral in Ani is one of the most remarkable masterpieces
of mediaeval Armenian architecture. Its foundation was laid in 989 by
king Smbat II, but because of his early death the construction was
continued by Gagik I.
A conference of scientists dealing with medieval architecture is
being held in Echmiadzin, from September 22 to September 27 dedicated
to this jubilee. It is chaired by Catholicos Karekin II, the head of
Armenian Church.
A range of lectures dedicated to Cathedral, in particular, and to
Armenian architecture, in general, was made by prominent Armenian
historians and architects.
