Solace until the storm abates!!

May 5 2012 at 7:45 PM

During my C2C walk last month (I waited until the wettest April on record!!) I was out on the moor when a real tempest of a storm blew up. I knew 'The Lion' was my only hope of refuge - but it was 3 miles off. I have never walked so quickly in full kit! I burst in the door (with Charlie the dog) and immediately felt the warmth of the real fires. I saw people with scrumptious food on their tables, smiles on their faces and a really nice feel about the place. I immediately made for the bar (Charlie made for the fire!) and was greeted warmly by Gaynor. I took a little time to select my ale, as the selection was superb, so I decided that it mattered not as it was early afternoon and I could try most of them! I joined Charlie by the fire and started my 'drying-out' procedures. More soaking walkers came in and joined us. The camaraderie was brilliant. I ordered food, (and another ale!) which was plentiful and appetising. As I was camping my way across England (and after checking my budget) I tried my luck at a room, but the ever popular Lion was fully booked on this occasion. I knew this meant a damp night in a pub garden (again!). Come the morning Charlie and I sprung excitedly into a pre-booked breakfast - which was quite simply superbalicious! It really set me up for the day ahead and 'our hero' Gaynor made sure Charlie was looked after too (including a farewell tummy tickle...Charlie, not me!). Sad to leave The Lion after one night, but we shall return (perhaps without the damp tent scenario!).
Keep doing what you're doing 'The Lion' you're pretty well near perfect in my book.

Thanks to everyone (especially G!).

Andrew and Charlie the dog.
