What's the problem? Are you kidding?

August 8 2007, 7:34 AM

Our teachers are the lowest paid in the state. The pay is so low that an unmarried teacher really can't afford to live independently here. Can you think of any single income teachers who can make it by themselves. I can think of only one.

The problem (the main problem) is obvious. The teachers that we have that are good enough to leave are leaving and we are left with the rest.

Our board also tends to hire uncertified people when there are certified candidates for the same job opening but that's another story altogether.

Actually Russell County pays less than Dickenson County now. And since places Wise County pay a lot better, it makes a lot more sense to leave.

And...when you have a school board that refuses to give you a chance because you're "nobody" (your parents/family aren't in the right social circle, you don't go to the "right" church), you have no choice but to leave the area.

I love this county and hate to admit that you are right. But we all know who controls the School Board and what can we do other than elect different S.B. members.

I hear Shanghai Nichols is running as a write-in candidate in the Ervinton district against Bill Patton. Anyone know anything about this?

Shanghai cannot run and stay on the air. So he is not running BUT if the public wants to vote for him as a write in candidate "I hear" he would take the job. anyone else heard anything about this? Would enough people understand how to do a write-in vote? Nov. should be interesting.

voices

You are right many voices do a make a difference! The other school board members are a great place to start. many are worried about the upcoming elections and just might take the time to listen to citizens. also, talk with "Dob" in our district and get his view on things. Hope this helped.

Alot of Qualified teachers do not get hired in Dickenson County!
You have to have a Relative on the School Board, turn a blind eye to what goes on in the running of the schools, have a Friend,Brother Uncle,Wife,Husband Mother in the School system ect.
That does NOT help the Children!
Also, from the research I have done it is not a policy to hire family members in the same school system.
Whats up with Sandlick and Haysi??
Also look at who gets all the Scholarships!
You do have to run with the ones who know how to fly under the radar line.
Another perk of living in a small town for some!
Hurts the majority.
Helps the few.
Someone high up needs to be contacted.

Haysi School looks runned down.
Where does all the Taxpayers money go??
Some good mowing, general upkeep would help!
Also, I saw the "Principal" with a mowing blade and a drill the other day
Guess he gets paid also for Mowing and roofing??
Its not your School Larry!
It is a Public School!
WOW!!
Gene Counts,Larry Compton, some of the Teachers?? ect...
No hope for Haysi!

It really hurts the children who live here.

Weird post

You should be THANKING Larry for doing the work himself that will not get done otherwise. Do you think he likes using his own time to do maintenance work. You aren't thinking at all though are you?

I feel that Larry Compton is the best principal that H.H.S. has had in a long time. I went there when David Yates was principal and I really liked him alot, he was a good principal and I still like him now. but Larry Compton is the best since David.(jmo). I think its great that a school has a principal that is willing to do things around the place when its not getting done otherwise, even though he shouldnt have to do it.

Larry is one of the hardest working people you will find. He goes above and beyond. Also, he really cares about the school and students. We are lucky to have him.

I also appreciate the fact that Larry is willing to do stuff like that. When there is something that needs to be done Larry has never been one to shy away from the job no matter how dirty or ugly it is.

Haysi needs to be Investigated

Maybe Haysi, the Schools ect would then prosper.
