i heard he was really upset as well. IF the letter was not true or was meaningless then I guess he would not be upset. The letter was good for him compared to the TRUE things that I have heard on him |

I agree that he is upset because it is the truth, or else why would he call her employer and threaten the employers sons job if he didn't keep her quite.
That's freedom of speech and she has every right to her own opinion. I think Bobby is running scared, because people is finally realizing just what kind of man he is. Ask the former deputies that worked for him, they can tell you a whole lot. In my opinion we need a change. Give Eugene Mullins a chance. I know he has my vote. |

I did talk to an old dep. and he told the story of how he was on a call and Bobby him with an emergency telling him to hurry up because his sister needed a crib and he needed that officer to go and get it and take it to her. Now why is my tax dollars going for his personal use? To me that is the same as lying about mileage, instead of lying about the milage just get paid to do personal things. |

The letter is an editorial in support of Eugene Mullins. I feel sorry for the woman that lost her daughter. How can a mother get over something like that. The woman wants Eugene for sheriff & said the current sheriff was more interested in making drug busts than saving lives. She says she complained to the sheriff "about what was going on" between her daughter & daughters husband G. Dotson before Dotson killed her & says the sheriff might have been able to prevent it. Seems like she can't accept in her heart that a warrent can't be issued for an arrest if the abused adult won't swear out a warrent. No matter who the sheriff is in a situation like this the sheriffs hands are tied. The magistrates hands are tied. I read about this murder when it happened & it was brutal & medical examiner took some time to make identification. Sheriff needed time to investigate as much as possible to make a preliminary identification before notifying family & it would've been irresponsible to tell somebody their child was dead unless he was pretty sure of it. Her daugher was first married to G. Evans (J. Evans birth father if I'm not mistaken). Even if her daugher had legal troubles in Wise & Dickenson County, it don't mean her mother misses her any less. |

Yes a warrent can be taken out on the abuser even if the abused doesnt do it... That is when it is said The state picked it up.... I kno been there done that |

The state can make an arrest & take up the case if they have evidence of a felony assault such as the victims injuries & the victim doesn't deny she was assaulted or if credible witnesses were present during the assault or if law officers witnessed the assault. Law officers can make an arrest without a warrent for misdemeanor assault only if they witness it. If a law officer doesn't witness a simple misdemeanor assault the state is not going to take up the case unless the victim swears out a warrent. If the victim is maimed but denies a felony assault happened and says she fell the state isn't going to take it up unless credible witnesses saw it. |

I bet she didn't say anything about all the times that her daughter had been arrested. I bet she didn't tell ya that she had been in court numerous times involving domestic assualt and if the COURT would have done their JOB, then this might not of happened. Am I right? |

yeah you are right. Its like the problem with her daughter started while Hammons Sheriff, but she fails to say that this was going on when Childress was Sheriff. You dont know what you are talking about. Ron Kendrick started with frank and was the head investigator . as far as the drugs are concerned in the 8 yrs that frank childress was sheriff there were more arrests and indictments than in all the last 3 previous sheriffs.the state police ucr reports show that if you know how to get them.if you dont have one of your friends help you.im sick and tired of people praising bobby hammons for the drugs. he hasnt done one tenth in seven and a half yrs that frank childress dept done.I know i was there and worked for the dept. |

| my opinion on bobbie hammons is this | October 13 2007, 5:02 PM |
(1) bobbie hammons has had multiple drug bust in the 7 1/2 almost 8 yrs he has been our sheriff (without scandle) I may be mistaken but wasn't mr. childress investigated for embezzling funds for gas/fuel for a long time, and so how is that any tribute to him, he was not a good sheriff other wise he would still be the sheriff, bobbie hammons does not pretend to your friend when its election time only, he is always there for those of whom ask for his help in any situation, by saying he has done nothing for the town, county is bull, you would be "saying" that everyone of whom voted him in for 2 terms were stupid also & I don't think people vote anymore based on sides (democrats or republicans), I think/believe people vote with their heart & what is the facts, the town of clintwood/dickenson county has had more grants from the goverment thanks to his outstanding war on drugs, the woman of whom wrote to the letter had her opinion & that is what freedom of speech is about, if she is upset over her daughter no longer being here, I think anyone could understand why she is/was bitter at even the sheriff & I also believe that maybe she should've intervened also as to not blame just one person for whatever happened to her daughter, if frank childress was in office at the beginning why is she not speaking out about him, and next eugene mullins is a pathetic excuse for a human being, he has a pie job that requires nothing more than bossing probationers around & lying to the judge about them when they get up on dockett call & say (they never tried to call me judge, I would've called them back) and their are multiple x 10 accounts of probationers saying the same thing, which means he no more cares about being a decent sheriff than well I (do) noone is perfect, noone is going to be able to be everywhere at the same time & will not be able to investigate every single phone call that comes into the jail house as that would take many, many years, bobbie hammons to my knowledge has not lied to anyone about anything, if he has then what has he lied about and why not ask him point blank why he lied, (WHAT POLITICIAN KEEPS EVERY PROMISE THEY MAKE) none!! if bobbie was disturbed by the letter to the editor then who would not be (true or false) words do hurt & he is no different than anyone else. |

Why do we never see a deputy doing a traffic check looking for drunks and druggies? Why do we never see a deputy or deputies searching vehicles beside the road? How many times has the current sheriff announced a roundup with at least a hundred indictments? The answer is none, Frank had the pleasure of announcing that several times. Bobby calls tv 5 when he has 20 to round up, what a joke. I think there is more to policing our county than serving papers and sitting around talking about what your going to do, just do it. As far as the mileage thing you might want to go to the courthouse and see who had to pay money back while working for Avery!!!! We have had almost eight years of not doing the pro-active things and that is why we are in the shape were in. I say vote for Eugene it can only get better because we are at rock bottom it cant get any worse. |
| Concerened about drug abuse
| where does does abuse stop? Besides loved ones overdosing | October 14 2007, 10:25 AM |
If all the drugies was busted in dickenson county there wouldn't be enough jail space to put them all in is what I was told. I would say I agree on that part, but there is more than just jails around here to put them in, theres other places for them. Drug problems are way out of control, theres alot more druggies on the streets than in jail. Way I see it as many more people do, 1 drug dealer gets caught, they put a wire on them to try set other people up, then when they get that druggie they do the same to that 1 put a wire on them and it just keeps going on and on like a non stop roller coaster that never stops, I myself wonders if it ever will end, we here more drug abuse overdose and deaths more and more everyday, druggies has more rights to drive on the road high as a kite then someone that drinks a few beers, just because there prescrition drugs, what does that matter? driving empaired is driving empaired no matter if its drinking booze or using prescription drugs, if you look at the law on driving while drinking for the first offense you will go to jail, but if you driving while taking narcotics prescribed from your doctor its ok, nothing done. I feel if a person is in that bad of a shape to be prescribed all these drugs by doctors then they should be in to bad of a shape to drive as well. doctors should be able to prescibe booze for an alcoholic as well cause there sick to and needs there medication for there sickness in that case. driving high is driving high no matter which way it is and should be stopped no matter if its booze or drugs. I don't uphold driving in either shape (booze or drugs) but something needs to be done about the driving while on narcotics. driving empaired is no good whice ever it maybe. Also when you get looking at it at my respective more of the drug abuse started when the age limit for drinking was raised to the age of 21 yrs, exspecially in younger people I think its because they no you can drive high while under prescription drugs and can't have any booze at all, and at younger age they like to exsperiance things and just maybe if the law had stayed at 18 yrs old for the age to go out and have a good time, drink a few beers hadn't been 21 yrs old there could be a good possiblty that the drug issues that we face today wouldn't got as bad as it has become. The way I see it made one think safer and another worse. I have kids of my own and I would reither for them to have a few beers at the age of 18 than all these narcotics thats out on the streets and its safer in my eyes to drink then to do all the drugs that people do.It has been said that there has been more deaths by drug overdose in the last couple of years than driving while under the influence, and other accidents combined our kids are not safe from drugs by any means and its getting worser and worser, how many more loved ones is people going to have to lay to rest before the drug abuse to stop? and the doctors needs to help and pull there weight to help it to stop as well. I just feel myself that the narcotics should be prescirbed to the terminally ill people, not to people with just artheritis, and other little aches and pains. excercise and non-narcotics can be used for minor aches and pains instead all the narcotics thats prescribed daily and I'm just posting here how I feel about all this I don't no how others feel about it, all I know is that something needs to be changed in our systems where ever or who ever can change it we need a change. Something needs to be done |

| media & t.v. reporting indictments (thats a good thing) | October 14 2007, 1:17 PM |
I BELIEVE THAT ITS NOT JUST BOBBIE HAMMONS OF WHOM DESERVES AN APPLAUSE AS IF IT WERE NOT FOR OUR STRONG COMMUNITY & NEIGHBORS THAT SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS & DRUG PUSHERS IN OUR COMMUNITY, IT TAKES MORE THAN 1 TO MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS WORK..I'M PROUD TO SAY I'M FROM DICKENSON COUNTY NOW!!! AS ITS MUCH CLEANER & MUCH SAFER & THE DRUG PUSHERS ARE LEAVING & YET THEY WILL ALWAYS BE THOSE OF WHOM WILL WANT TO RISK IT & THEN MAYBE OR MAYBE NOT LOSE. BUT OUR COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE IS WHY BOBBIE HAMMONS & HIS STAFF & COURT SYSTEM ARE ABLE TO FIGHT THIS BATTLE AS SO WE DON'T HAVE'T TO BE ON THE FRONT LINE THEY ARE ON THE FRONT LINE & THEY RISK THEIR LIVES EVERY TIME THEY DO A DRUG BUST OR A SET UP.
its great if bobbie hammons alerts the media about indictments, it not only brings notice to our community in a good way but also shows other drug pushers dickenson county & surrounding areas will not put up with drugs in our community, it gives those a warning to either leave our county or stay & be caught & prosecuted, it sends a message to anyone that thinks they are never going to be caught, it only takes 1 to take down 10 & then those 10 that tell on others bring down 100's & so on, so yes I think its a great stradegy on bobbie hammons part to notify the public of what his strengths are & have been for almost 8 yrs, (PEOPLE FORGET) that we are all human & make mistakes & what bobbie hammons has done for dickenson county, clintwood areas is take alot of drugs off the streets & out of harms way, noone can get them all, but with the help of our court system & new laws, and drug bust indictments theirs less drugs in the open & drug pushers are taking notice & thinking twice of whom they sell too or even buy from, so what is wrong with the media doing what most would not believe had they not seen it with their own eyes on t.v. & are you shocked when someone you know that you never thought was a drug pusher gets caught, I'm sure you are, our streets, homes & our schools are much safer now than they were before the past 7 1/2 yrs bobbie has been in office & if anyone can do better then run yourselves & see just how easy it is to bust drug pushers, it won't be so easy unless you can trust those your working with & give indictments to those of whom aren't/wasn't expecting to get busted 1 bust or 100 doesn't matter, indictments are a good thing for drug pushers & I'm sure it has saved countless lives in our area.....
p.s.
also at least bobbie hammons & his staff aren't ignoring those of or with power or money, at least we know he doesn't over look someone because their a politician, doctor, friend or employee & it takes a long period of time I'm sure to actually get to the point to actually indict someone & also obtain enough evidence to get them off the streets, as one offense is usually nothing, 2 maybe probation & the 3rd time is the charm, their given real jail time & they deserve it, it isn't easy doing what they do or any drug force task does, they must be careful of whom knows the investigation, they must have definite proof of their actions of breaking the law & 20 indictments in one fail swoop is awesome. (NOT TO MENTION HOW DANGEROUS THEIR JOBS ARE BUSTING DRUG PUSHERS) I wouldn't want to be the one to walk up to someones house & say hey your under arrest, if they make it that far as maybe they'll get spooked & shoot at you, its happened & well I wouldn't want their jobs..it takes a strong person & staff to do what our town has accomplished |

you are crazy if you think he DOESN'T over look people with money.... as far as the tv goes yep that at least tells the other pushers who to watch..... and I KNOW for a fact that the police will alert one of their buddies if they are going to the wrong place... at least the investagators do... Sherlock warned one of his buddies that his daughter was going..... and Watson advised the boy that lived there that they were watching his home and who they wanted to get... | Voter says sheriff's office needs change | October 13 2007, 6:58 PM |
To the Editor:
As we all are aware, Election Day is rapidly approaching, and as a lifelong citizen of Dickenson County, I think it's "time for a change," expecially in our sheriff's office.
For eight years, this county has gone downhill. Promises were made by our current sheriff and, as far as I can see, he hasn't kept any of them. What happened to his promises to serve and protect, and to rid the county of drugs?
Drugs are a big problem in Dickenson County and they played a role in the 2002 brutal murder of my daughter, Tonya Withrow. I believe the tragedy may have been prevented if the sheriff had been more interested in saving her life than making a drug bust. It is my hope that no family would have to bury a loved one because of negligence.
Don't get me wrong; the drugs need to go, but not by neglecting other issues. I went to the sheriff two weeks before my daughter's murder and tried to talk to him about what was going on with her and the man who killed her. I felt like he didn't want to listen to anything I had to say.
The phone call I received telling me my child was dead did not come from the sheriff or his department. I had to hear it from a neighbor the following day. It was a week later before the sheriff faced me and he still didn't want to answer my questions.
Wakeup, Dickenson County. We have got to make a change. Vote on Nov. 6, 2007. And vote for someone who will keep all his promises, not just the one that will benefit himself. My vote goes for Eugene Mullins for sheriff.

| Tragedy being used for political gain. | October 13 2007, 4:53 PM |
Basically this letter is nothing more than someone being used as a political pawn to exploit a tragedy for political gain. Why would they wait till so close to the election to shout it out to the world? If this person really wants to blame the Sheriff for the death of her daughter then she also needs to blame the courts, judges and the commonwealth attorney(since he is a Democrat he gets excused). These two parties involved in this deal were in and out of jail numerous times and it was all as a result of their own choices in life. They were grown adults but they sure didn't act like it. Why isn't the mother then blaming the judge for not giving them longer sentences or the commonwealths attorney for that matter. The tragedy that resulted was because of the perpetrator and victims lifestyle and not because the Sheriff "didn't do anything about it". It is a sad situation and two lives have been destroyed forever but it is in no way the fault of the Sheriff. It is a shame that a senseless tragedy is being used as political fodder. |

For you to know all and them some you sure dont know much... Your post makes you sound like an a##. She is not talking about what they done in the past she is talking about what was said and done 2 weeks before... And a warrent can be issued without the abuser doing it If the sate see's or suspects violence they Can and Should step in. But from what I was told Bobby had the boy "working" for him and you can't lock up your Narc how would you catch more people to get to be narc's?
You seem to be looking thru rose colored glasses, so I assume you are a relative or close friend of Bobby's or you work for him and afraid that him loosing will affect your job. I am not taking up for Joe Short but I also realize that it is not his fault alone, Bobby deserves his part of the blame as well. He is the one that hires the police that do the shabby work, so it is his fault when they mess up and believe me they do! Also the police agree to the Narc's as well (that is how they get sweet deals) Joe has the right to punish them but he has to have the evidence to do so.. remember he does have to present it before 12 people that need to see that the person is guilty not just take the words from crooked police, yes crooked they have to have someone to confess or they will just pin it on the person they want to.
You need to sit a while in the court room and see that the police are as worthless as Joe is. Not all the blame goes to Joe alone it is pretty much 50-50 they both need to be replaced.
And why is she writing this letter at this time, maybe it is because she knows that now is the time to do so. Had she written it a while back people would have done forgotten. So now is the time to remind people. |

Yes in domestic cases a law officer can make an arrest without witnessing it but it has to be on more than suspicion. Has to be reasonable cause. They could make an arrest if reported by a credible witness but if the victim denies it I doubt any law enforcement would pursue charges. |

| Re: Thats true | October 14 2007, 1:23 AM |
Exactly my point now was that Joe's fault? I doubt that he even knew that it had happened. I also doubt that Bobby did, but the falut of the officer lies in Bobby's hands because he is the man in charge. What if they had took your relative home and he had killed her? Just because they knew him did should not have gave him a get out of jail free card!
I hate to put it this way but an abused woman is like an abused animal even when you kick them down they still come back with love. They make excuses for why it happened and believe that it will never happen again... time after time. And an officer should know that, they most of the time will not press charges, and think that it is their fault. |

awesome post DD you hit the nail on the head about battered spouses (women in general), they are made to feel as if everything is their fault, if their husband hits them, they think they done something wrong, sort of like brain washing, and they walk around on egg shells afraid to speak unless spoken to, they feel that if their good then he won't hit me tonight, but it doesn't matter once it starts it rarely ends well. glad your post was something most don't even think about. |

Most people have no idea what another person may go through behind closed doors, This happens everywhere, But it dont just happen to someone that you see on the news, It may be your neighbor, your sister, your daughter, your friend. This is just my personal view on the violence: I did write it and got the statics from a national website... to chk it you only have to google toll of domestic violence deaths
The Life of a Battered Woman
A woman that lives with an abusive husband most of the time does not realize that she is a vicitm of domestic violence. She has a very low self-esteem, is withdrawed, and believes that she is the cause and effect. She is her husbands biggest supporter, And will get mad at her family, friends or anyone else who may put him down. She hides her bruises and injuries from the public eye. She is ashamed of her bruises because in her mind it was "her fault". Had she not made him mad it would have never happend,
For example... husband usually comes home at 6pm sharp, but comes in at 8 and dinner is cold... had she only started it later and kept it warm instead of putting it in the microwave it would have been Hott and Fresh... it was her fault... When in reality had she have started dinner late and he been on time that would also have been a beating for not having dinner done.
An abusive husband gets complete mind control over the wife, he begins to distance her from her friends and then family... to convience her that no other man would tolerate all her mistakes.... and that he is only tring to teach her to do better that he would not hit her if she didnt make him so mad....
In public he will treat her like a queen, he first becomes mentally abusive, she is fat, ugly, no other man would date her. She is stupid, no matter how high the education. He beats her down mentally and when he has her to where she believes That is when he has to take it to the next level to make her run and hide and cry, he has told her so much that she has quit cring and only hangs her head in shame so he has to make his point known and Beat it in to her. Though he knows what he is doing is wrong, yet still does it. But also wants her to hide what he has done so that no one will look down on him. At the begining he may even cry and beg her forgiveness, promising how it will never happen again, but he never fails to remind her how it was her fault that he done it to start with. Then eventully he knows that he is in control and does not even have remorse for what he is doing, it begins to happen more often...
538 women died at the hands of their husbands last year.
A true man does not hit a woman, And True love does not contain abuse in any form physical or mental.
I pray for the strenght of any woman that is going though this, not that they will have to strength to live with it but they will have the strenght to realize that They are pretty and smart and that another man would love them for them and be good to them would say hey lets go for pizza if she burns dinner because the baby fell and she was wiping tears. That they will have the strenght to Walk Away safe and alive. |
