i agree.......he has no educational background.....i think that we someone that can bring some good qualities to the community..and as of now hes not showing those qualities.
True, no experience at county government but who does have it with starting out? Scott Moore for instance had no experience prior to his first term and now he gets voted in each term. No education can prepare you for county government. Common sense does go along way and it does help you down the road. Most of our senior politicians at state level remember the "characters" and good common sense folks than they do the educated folks who know all. Mr. Sykes has been attending the board meetings for years and speaks his mind while attending. I feel he or any of them will do a great job once introduced to the system. Bottom line, you're not goijng to change much here in DC.

First and foremost, if you would take the time to read ALL the candidates pamphlets that they hand out you would understand that what you have just stated about Mr. Sykes is actually quiet false. If you haven't received any information about this candidate then you should probably take a step back on getting on a public forum and saying such things without looking into it.
He actually has more than a third grade education, probably more of an education than most around here have. He attended Council High School and graduated there, and after his children were raised he started attending Southwest Virginia Community College.
You may come back with a blow to me like "you're a democrat, blah blah" but that's fine. I just don't like it when people harp on other people when the facts aren't even close to being straight.
If the tides were turned and Mr. Sykes' opponent was having false accusations posted about him, I would also defend him if I knew the correct information in which I do because he to came by my house.
My hats off to you Amy. Good response and I must say you are getting more fair minded when it comes to politics. You are right in defending Delano because the trash talking by some people serves no purpose. I know Joe Boyd has took his share of licks as well and thats not right either. One thing I can say in fairness to both of them----they both had the guts to run for local public office with the intention of trying to make the county a better place knowing the scrutiny and ridicule that will go with it. They both have different ideas and visions about whats right for the county and its up to the voters to decide and I should hope they do so without regards to the party affiliation.

I am not sure about showing false statements against his opponent, But I do know that in my home it was not brought up at all. He only spoke of things he would do. He did not promise me any gravel or try to buy my vote in any way.
As a child I can remember Mr.Sykes and his wife from the Skate ring at both Sandlick and the one at the old movie theater in Haysi, How he was always so good to all of us children.
I also remember Mr.Counts when I was in High School, how it never failed for you to get that touchy feely hug from him and the comments that no vice principal should make. Though he may have more of an education than Mr. Sykes does not mean he is the best person.
I believe that HONESTY is the best quality for this job, therefore I believe that Mr. Sykes is the best qualified for this position. An honest man can take us more places than a man that has all the education in the world and only looks to benefit himself.
Mr. Counts thought that he had this whole community snowballed into believing that he was doing so much for us that he would auto win hands down.....now he has seen that is not the case.
Has any of you ever driven down Splashdam when the sewage plant is acting up? That smell will make you sick, In the past years that Mr. Counts has been the supervisor why has he not done anything about that? Being that he cares so much about this area and the rivers, That has to unsanitary there has to be some type of Grants that he could have got to fix it, so why has it not been already fixed. Instead of worrying about kayaking? Could it be that his intrest is in Kayaking therefore he wants to insure the quuality of that.
I hope he has seen that he has misrepresented the invoice that he showed me and many others, and has discontinued using it as a election ploy to win votes.
If he has, I would like to hear it from him myself, if not, maybe he just felt you were not so inclined to care about DCWin.
You may even be a DCWin customer and such an invoice would not be prudent to winning your vote.
I too have known him for years and have nothing against him on a personal level.
I just feel that his misrepresentation of the invoice was not the right thing to do.
It has made a differnce in the way I may cast my vote.
Maybe it was a mistake, maybe not but he never did mention it to me and I do not have DCWin.... maybe you should call and talk to him and see if it was or not..... I dont know, if he had stopped or if he was trying to pull a fast one or what I just know that it was never mentioned at my home and that he did spend quite a while here
I also believe that honesty is the best quality for this job, therefore I believe that Gene Counts is the best qualified person for this position. Gene Counts is a honest man, and a good man. Gene Counts has done more for the Sandlick district than all the others before him put together. Mr. Sykes knows nothing about this job. Oh by the way, have you ever driven down below Elkhorn City, Ky or over to the mouth of Conaway? When sewage plants act up, their is nothing that can be done about the smell, because everyone knows that when you stir up ****, it will smell!

When I get to campaign, when I am asked about my opponents, I state that I am not present to attack anyone or talk bad about anyone else and that I am there to answer questions or state my views on what I plan to do.
Whatever education Delano has, he worked and he raised his kids. He may have had to quit school to work to support his family which would be quite an honorable reason. While this may be construed that I seem to be supporting him, I'm not asking you to vote for him - I hope you vote for me but please no attacking.
Concerning the invoice that I sold elbow masts to DCWIN from MainBoard, MainBoard is a County vendor - MainBoard is a business, there is a W-9 on file at the Board of Supervisor's Office for MainBoard. If I turn down a legitimate customer I am unwise business owner. If I were to have increased the price of a product beyond the price that any other vendor could offer and then try to influence the vote to go to my company, that would be illegal and unethical. I sold the product CHEAPER than DCWIN was getting mounts from any other vendors, I abstained from the votes because I serve on the board, I consulted with TWO attorneys on this issue before making any proposal and was advised to ABSTAIN from any voting on the decision, I was advised to propose just like any other vendor - which I did.
I made a mistake printing the invoice that I will admit to and show ANYONE that wants to come to my store and look at the various formats that you can print an invoice in from QuickBooks Pro. I printed the invoice in Professional Format which did not include a QUANTITY column with the newer version upgrade that I was using - that the older version did print before. Keith called me when that invoice came in to the office and asked me if that was for one mount and I affirmed that it was for fifty pieces and told him I could send another invoice before they paid it but he said it was O.K. and not necessary. I assumed he made notes on the invoice about the quantity; apparently he did not because the invoice is floating about now. If it is of any consequence, I sold fifty pieces one year and fifty pieces the year before; this year I could only come up with twenty-five elbow masts so I have done business on three occasions with the DirecTV elbow masts.
My Position: Based on my knowledge skills and abilities, I am the most qualified, that is why I entered the race, if I did not believe this to be so, I would not have entered this race. I do not like to sit around complaining about the happenings or lack of something happening. If something needs to be done, and someone wants to vocalize, then they must be willing to do something about it by getting in a position to make a change.
I am presently working on some huge opportunities for my business with NYSE and NASDAQ listed companies - if I were ONLY concerned with me, I would not have entered this race and would be solely focused on MY issues BUT I have a desire to make a change in my community, to make an improvement for all people of Dickenson County and the Sandlick District. If you don't believe this and you cannot be persuaded, I apologize I have disappointed you before I have had the opportunity to try, but I'm not going to quit just because I cannot please everyone. If given the opportunity to serve I will do the best I can.
I have a generic platform because I am reluctant to make a promise on a specific issue wherein if I do not persuade two other supervisors to vote in favor through a preponderance of benefits - I may not be able to do anything on a specific issue.
