| What does everyone think about the new law that was passed? You know the one about littering well JUNK in your own yard. Personally I think that we the people are paying taxes on our land and it shouldn't be anyone's business what is in our yard or how junky it may seem. I am like Mr. Deel if you don't like what is in our yards then don't look. I mean is this really a free country? No I don't think so. It is getting worse as the days go by. I know that Mr. Sykes isn't truely in office yet, but he didn't say anything against this. What have we put in office for the next four years? |

Why don't all of us who oppose this go to the next meeting and voice our opinion. I think that Mr. Deel was looking out not just for his property but ours and everyone else. Maybe he should have been on the board instead of Mr. Sykes. I didn't vote for him and I think that we are all going to wish he wasn't voted in. He will not voice his opinion-I feel that he will just go along with the rest. |

Im all for the law and ifthe property owner dosent clean, move his trash, junk and anything that is an eyesore he should be fined made to clean up or the county can and send him a bill. if he doesnt comply then have the sheriff go get him and put him in jail. we in dickenson county are going to clean up our property if we want our visitors to come in and vacation/ business to come in.. I for one dont want to live back in the 1950 where every holler was filled up with junk cars and appliances.I commend the board of supv and will stand behind them 100 pr cent |

I must disagree I think that if I pay the taxes on my propety and I already live up in a holler with only 4-5 homes why bother. Some of us work and aren't able to keep our place spotless so if you don't like what you see turn your head. I know one person that tried to put up a fence and the neighbor would not them alone so are you going to come and stand guard so some of us can build a fence? |

Well that may work. But still why should we have to build a fence? What if we don't want a fence. Then we would have to do this just to satisfy others. I'm not here to please everyone. I think they are getting enough from the people in the county. Why not leave us alone. |

So what are you getting out of the deal to be behind this stupid law? I feel as though the land we pay taxes on is ours and nobody should tell us what to do on or with it. |

I think your wrong to say that the sheriffs office just come in and start aressting people over some garbage. you going to far with your humor dude.Thats whats wrong with things now. I think everyone gets a big kick out of jail for some reason.Anyway theres not a deputy in the county got enough Ba**s to pull in a mans driveway to arresst him over what he has on his own property.Oh yea one more thing, I see beauty in old cars and trucks and old mining machines and all that so called junk. I LOVE IT . | |

Folks get real okay. A mess is a mess and I guarantee any of you who have children who don't clean their rooms would not dare let a child say well "mom/dad if you don't like it, turn your head the other way and don't look at it." This is bull milarkie. I guess this means I can come and take a dump right in front of your house everyday and as long as it's on the state road that I pay taxes on and not your yard then you can just turn your head if you don't like it.
The hypocracy and ignorance writhing through the statements of folks too lazy to clean up their land sickens me. You must except every form of junk and crap in front of your face, if you expect others to except yours. I bet none of you have ever complained about a restaurant being unclean or a bathroom etc., have you, no, you all just turned your heads the other way I'm sure. Now the people who own that facility are allowed to say, well "I pay the TAXES on it, just turn your head the other way if you don't like it!" I'm sorry if I'm coming across a bit antsy, but filth and junk sets my heels on fire and our dearly beloved "Garbage Man" Buford fought everyday of his good ole' life to keep our county clean. You shame his work and his life when you act like garbage trashed all around the county in your yard or wherever is fine and long as you own the land your trashing up. Get real folks, acknowledge the ignorance of your statements and clean up your crap. There should be very strict laws enforced when it comes to the filth people allow to lay around for ages on end in our county. I say put their butts to cleaning up the hillsides and streams, not to mention their own ugly homes.
Sorry for offending any of you junkies out there, but honestly people the world would be a lot nicer place to live if people would learn to take responsibility for their trashy lives and not ask everyone else to just turn their heads if they don't like it. Shoot, I'll buy ya a bag of Garbage bags if you need um. |

Your the one that don't understand. We are not talking about the highways and the ditches. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT OUR OWN PROPERTY. Its ours not the countys. If we have things in our yard that everyone thinks is junk then so be it. If that is the case then nobody should be aloud to have flower pots, etc in their yard. Wouldn't that be considered junk. So its only what others title junk. Get real people. The county is trying to run our lives and not let us be our own person. |

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE $$$$$$$$$$$$ THEY SEE
JUST WAIT TILL SOME ONE FINDS YOUR NAME AND TAKES IT TO THE LITTER OFFICER SEE WHAT YOU PAY THEN AND SEE WHO TRIES TO GET THE LAW REMOVED.
YOU KNOW WHAT THE UGLYEST SIGHT I HAVE SEEN IN THE COUNTY THE MESS THE GAS COMPANY MAKES AND THE WELLS AND PIPES RUNNING THUR THE COUNTY WITH NO MONEY FROM THEM
YOU SAY NOTHING WANT COME IN HERE FOR JOBS BECAUSE OF THE TRASH WHY HAS THE B.O.S. NOT TRIED IF THEY SPEND A LITTLE MORE TIME TRYING TO GET SOMEONE IN HERE AS THEY DO TRYING TO RUN THE PEOPLE OUT OF THE COUNTY THEN SOME THING WOULD GET DONE THAT J.M.O. |

If they want us to clean up our property then why did they take out the trash dumps that were in haysi. They need to put them back. Buford did do a great job. But picking up trash at a persons home once a week is sometimes not enough. We're not aloud to burn it either. So you tell me how we are suppose to keep it clean when we can't burn and there isn't any trash dumps. |

| Re: new law | December 8 2007, 12:58 PM |
I am wondering what the elderly or disabled will do if this is passed. They may live at an old homeplace with no resources to get rid of "junk" or may not be pyhsicallly able to dispose of it. We all know that what may be junk to us may not be junk to someone else-especially the elderly. Is there going to be a provision to help people dispose of stuff? Will they be charged? Who gets to decide what to get rid of? |

| Burning, The Elderly, and Taxes! | December 8 2007, 2:52 PM |
Everyone has heard the quote "where there is a will there is a way" correct, if you haven't heard it, you have now. See I don't buy the lazy man's plea of "I can't, I can't I can't" or "I didn't know about that," or "I have never heard that before." See, if you REALLY want to be proactive and clean up your crap, you can with the help of the county through programs in which you PAY TAXES FOR! They are out there and all you have to do is Google, "Virginia Trash Laws" or "Dickenson County Trash Laws" or "Virginia Burn Laws" etc., and a slew of information will come up to help you. For example:
(Burning Trash: Via the (Virginia Dept. of Forestry)
"Briefly, the 4:00 p.m. Burning Law states: from February 15 through April 30 of each year, no burning before 4:00 p.m. is permitted, if the fire is in, or within 300 feet of, woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable material.
Since forest fuels cure during the winter months, the danger of fire is higher in early spring than in summer when the forest and grasses are green with new growth. The 4:00 p.m. Burning Law is an effective tool in the prevention of forest fires.
For more information and complete copies of the law, please contact your local VDOF office."

Via: Cumberland Plateau Regional Wast Management
(Pickup and Removal of Large Items:
Abandoned Car Roundup Program: To rid the roadsides and front yards of abandoned cars, local litter control and recycling offices have developed this program. It is currently being implemented in Buchanan and Dickenson Counties. Russell County is pursuing the development of this program in 2006.
White Goods or Large Appliance Recycling Roundups: To aid in the cleanup of illegal dumps and to increase the counties recycling rates, citizens are encouraged to participate in the free collection of large appliances. Citizens in Buchanan and Dickenson Counties have the option of curbside pickup and drop off sites. Russell County citizens have the option of dropping appliances off at the Russell County Transfer Station.)
So there are solutions to getting rid of the junk, if you don't take the solutions and you get fined for being nasty, then it's your own fault. You pay taxes for these programs too, so which is worse utilizing programs you pay for to rid your yard of unwanted items or paying taxes on a place that your going to have to pay double for if your found in negligence? It seems more logical to me to utilize the programs, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out folks. Save money and save your own skin by taking advantage of the counties help. Remember, if you don't take advantage of it and you get fined, regardless of whether or not it's your own land or not that you pay taxes on, cause a law is a law, then your just being pure lazy and as my good ole' Papaw and Mamaw used to say "nothing but pure scratch!"

You must be getting something from the county for taking up for them. I think it is stupid. NOT A FREE COUNTRY is what I say. I think that it is just a money gimmic. As I have stated junk is what others title it to me. What you may consider junk may not be to me. So what about people have flower pots, cermics and other items in their yard? Is that junk?

I once again ask a question. Who gets to decide whats "crap" as you so elegantly put it. Will it be litter control? Will it be a new position-hired to just ride around and look for "crap"? Laws are great, but enforcement is the key. |

| Actually....No. | December 8 2007, 5:27 PM |
I don't receive a penny from the county, no services, no goods, nothing. I don't even live back home currently. I only have an interest in the support of making our communities the best they can be regardless of who must do it and how. Do I believe basic human rights, freedoms, and liberties should be compromised to do so, absolutely not. However, I do believe that humans are responsible for their own actions and anything whether it be flower pots or ceramics or junk cars and trash that become eye sores or nuisances to the county should be asked first to be cleaned up and those with messes to take charge of their homes, and then if the rules are not complied with then it is the right of any citizen in the community to say they don't like the "crap" and wish it were cleaned up! : )
I must go back to the restaurant, public restroom, and those who have children etc. Is it the right of the owner of a business to serve you food off of a dirty plate, make you eat off a nasty table and the like just b/c they pay taxes on the place? Is it the right of the owner of a business to allow a bathroom to wreak of filth, but b/c they pay taxes on the establishment that you must shop at, say for example Food City, Edward's, or The Dollar General Store then you just have to put up with it and not look at it? Is it the right of the children of families to scatter their clothing, toys, etc all over the house and b/c it's their's not clean it up? Do you not understand the illogical argument of one saying that leaving a junked up yard is okay? I mean this eludes me.
Oh, and let me get this. Your saying that flower pots and ceramics are junk and not decorative? Hmm? Do you own a flower pot, have you ever, do you own anything decorative? I think that if anything, be it cars or flower pots that become run down and useless and are just sitting then they should be cleaned up, YES! However, I'm not saying that the car your working on or the flower pot you have flowers growing in that is useful, being put to use, is junk. I can't speak for those behind the making of the new law, I do not know what they will deem as "junk" or be asked to clean up. I do know that I support the law, because I believe we should take responsibility for our messes or whatever negative scenes we have created. There is no excuse for someone to let years and years of stuff pile up and never get it removed. It isn't fair to the people who may live around someone like this. They have just as much freedom and rights as you do to not want the garbage in their face as you do wanting it left in your yard. I can't understand the logic of why anyone would argue that leaving their yard a mess is a good thing.

Generally I dont respond on here...but really, why in the world would anyone complain about a law like this??? This is one of the only places in the country that this has even been allowed this long. Join the rest of the world!! This is not something that Dickenson County dreamed up people. And I dont believe we're talkin about flower pots here. That's just being ridiculous. It doesnt take a brain surgeon to look around this county and see what is considered junk...trash...garbage around so many properties in this area. I know that it may be someones property and you just may pay the taxes, and YOU MAY not even care what anyone else thinks. You know what? You should care what others think. If you take a stand or an opinion on an issue that you believe in wholeheartedly and you know its right, by all means dont worry about what others think...otherwise you should care what others think of you!!! God blessed us with a home to live in so why not take care of what we have. Oh and btw I also work 2 jobs, I'm somebody's wife, and somebodys mother. I definatley run short on time, but it takes as much time to pick this stuff up as it did to throw it down. I love my home. It reflects on me as well as my family. I dont understand why anyone would want to keep this nastiness around anyway |
