File to run in town elections by March 4
PAULA TATE / Editor
While most of the political talk these days relates to this fall’s presidential election, voters in the county’s three towns have other elections to ponder before then.
Town council elections will be Tuesday, May 6. Those who want to run in the elections need to declare their candidacy soon. March 4 at 7 p.m. is the deadline for candidates to file paperwork with Dickenson County Registrar Reba Childress.
CLINCHCO
The mayor’s seat and all six council seats are up for grabs this year. Randy Moore is the current mayor, while council members include Robert Carico, Trevor Counts, Teresa Delaney, Ralph Sutherland and Sue Fleming.
No candidates have filed yet to run in the election.
CLINTWOOD
Three council seats will be on the ballot, including those currently held by Ron Kendrick, Tammy Robinson and Danny Lambert.
No one has filed yet to run for the seats.
The council also includes Glenn Lawrence and Randy Davis, while Donald Baker is mayor.
HAYSI
The mayor’s post, currently held by Norman Mullins, will be up for grabs. Mullins, who has been the town’s mayor for nearly three decades, has opted not to seek re-election. Larry Dean Yates has filed to run for the seat, however.
Three council terms also expire: those held by Johnny Branham, Dennis Reedy and Rocky Wood. So far, Branham and Reedy have filed to seek re-election.
Other council seats are held by Joe Sperow, Mike Harris and Paul Arrington.
HOW TO FILE FOR CANDIDACY
In addition to being a resident of the town, candidates must file their intent with Childress. That requires filling out a form and submitting it to her office.
VOTING
Those who want to vote in the May town council elections should know that April 7 is the last day to register, if you are not already a registered voter.
Childress said those who have moved into the towns since the last election also need to notify her office.
The deadline to apply for absentee ballots by mail is April 29, while the deadline to apply in person is May 3.

If you are referring to me, I appreciate the confidence you have in me but I have no desire to serve in local government offices any longer. Another prohibitive factor, I do not live in the Haysi Town Limits any longer.
