Hidden Charge on Wednesday nights at Country Cupboard

August 13 2008 at 8:47 PM
Displeased

I was displeased to find tonight as my family and I went to eat at the Country Cupboard after open house at Sandlick Elementary that not only was the service lacking, but that there was a hidden charge once we went to pay for our order. Do not get me wrong I know every waitress can have an off night, but I find it pretty interesting that when they inform us for Karaoke night there is a three dollar charge per person or a five dollar charge per couple not at the time we come in but only after we are paying. When stating that I knew nothing about the extra charge they politely say “Most people don’t” They have a sign posted on their door about a cover charge on band night, which when warned up front I do not see a problem with. I find it to be a problem when charging a hidden fee that let me remind everyone in the waitress’ own words Most people don’t know about for someone who is just sitting there eating and not taking part in the Karaoke is a little hard to swallow. So I would like to inform everyone in Haysi of something that most people might not know about so that in turn you may want to do what we should have done in the first place avoided the hidden charges by avoiding dining in.

I don't do ANY business there any more

August 13 2008, 10:09 PM

They also have the HIGHEST PRICED GAS IN THE COUNTY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I drove from Birchleaf to Clintwood and back today. Most everywhere was $3.59 THEY were/are still $3.99.

$.40 HIGHER THAN EVERY OTHER STATION I PASSED:

Even 83 gas was $3.59 as was Triple T, the Marathon in Clintwood, Valero.

I heard that the owners wanted to sell out, but with their prices and the way customers are treated I will not do business there anymore and I would guess that many others feel the same way. I believe that the business is being ruined and it will make it very hard to sell. I used to buy all of my gas there for 4 vehicles, in fact Benny used to tell me he knew how much I spent there and was appreciated for all of my business.

For your Information gas at RT 80 Mini mart is now cheaper, we had to sell out the last load of gas before bringing down prices. People that dont know anything about the business would not understand. Gas NOW is $3.54

Marathan Gas

August 14 2008, 11:46 AM

Their is a difference in Name brand Gas and no name gas. Our gas comes from a Marathan Company. Gas Prices vary daily and we are unable to change prices at will. Our prices are only changed when loads come in. As for JDM I cannot speak for them. They have out business and we have ours!

See my comments about othe Marathon stations above. I think you are just covering you own gas usage at your customer's expense.

The Marathon Station in Clintwood recieves more business than we do, naturally they would get more trucks in their to fill up their tanks more often than we do. We only get gas when we are low and what price we get it for when we need it is the price we have to pay, nothing we can change about that. I'm very sorry to all that this has come about, We appreciate your business at Rt. 80 Mini Mart and also at the Country Cupboard, and with everything becoming very pricy these days it would be in everyones best bet to goes the cheapest route, we understand that!

'BOUT TIME. you are always the HIGH price leader in the county. Other stations including the Marathon in Clintwood are changeing their prices daily and I know that they are NOT getting deliveries of fuel each day. Both of the other Marathons in the area have been at least 20 cents lower for at least 2 weeks

My family had dinner there tonight as well. We received our order and asked for to go boxes because my ears were bleeding so bad from the god awful racket they called karaoke. No offense, I come from the north but, when having to be torchered by carny-oke I prefer lots of alcohol and some ear plugs! Thank you for the info about the fee. I paid my bill and was never made aware of the charge. We eat there pretty often but, I think on Wednesday nights we will be having mexican!

as for your response how could you set there and complain about children singing, that is awful. i am very proud of those children because some of them were mine, if you would rather get drunk than have a good time with family then so be it, quit complaining about the country cupboard

For your info I was NOT in there when it was children. They were grown adults and I am sorry but, some people are gifted and should sing for a crowd. Some should only sing in the privacy of their own car. I witnessed the latter. It is great kids have stuff to do but, I don't appreciate having to listen to sounds of cats dying! JMO. Also, yes, a fat shot of whisky might have made the noise not so terrible! If you think I was downing your kids you just want to have a reason for your panties to be in a bunch. I actually support activities for kids so maybe you should check your facts. Believe it or not there are MILLIONS of people who don't enjoy karaoke and we happen to be four of them! To those of you that enjoy it that is your choice- no foul! We just wanted to grab a burger after open house and that's the ONLY reason we were there!

first of all my panites are not in a wad, if i am not mistaking you had said that the carney-oke was bad, and you did not specify adults, i am glad that you were there because we appreciate the support, but next time it is best if you keep your mouth shut and appreciate a good cause when you see one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nor did I specify children. YOU read that in to it! I will always support a good cause but, it is hard to when your ears are bleeding! I will open my mouth and express any opinion I so choose. Why aren't YOU keeping YOUR mouth shut? Let me answer that for you, because you have a right to your opinion as do I. No matter what you say, I DID NOT enjoy the CARNYOKE nor will I ever. I, again, am not referring to your KIDS. I DID NOT hear them sing. Thanks for playing though!

well..haha then....because I don't think that you won anything but the title as being a VERY RUDE and SELF CENTERED PERSON!, who could care less about a good cause when she sees one!
So thank you for playing!

The joke is on me because I am letting you suck me in to this conversation. What exactly is this great cause? And just to point out I am using MY real name! I am NOT hiding! You can go on with your dense comments because again YOU want me to be insulting a bunch of kids! That is NEVER going to happen! You can try to twist my comments any way you choose, I will NEVER like CARNYOKE! So, respond if you like- I'll save my comments for someone who gets the point!

this is a cause that is supposed to get some of the children off of the streets and to enjoy some time with family and friends, i respect the fact that you do not like the music and i also respect the fact that you did not specify children, i just wish everyone would just look at the world today and see how we all as a community can make some differences in the live of some our young ones and i belive with all of my heart that this is one of those times, so please at least give us props for trying to do the right thing because that is what we are trying to do

I think that I have given the country cupboard props if you read all of my posts. If we didn't enjoy the atmosphere we wouldn't come in 2 or 3 times a week. I just thought that I should have been advised of a fee for karaoke. On every table there was a piece of paper advertising karaoke, why not the fee? Also, I would not have been so vicious about the karaoke if I had not been accused of picking on kids. I appreciate the fact that you can respect my opinion. Believe it or not, the original post was constructive. I have always been nice to the workers and have said repeatedly that we enjoy the food. I give mad props that you are one of the few places that have things for the kids. That's all. So, I am outwardly acknowledging the crew there. You do a great job and we will continue to be customers but, not on Wed. nights (LOL)!

That was stupid!!

August 16 2008, 4:50 PM

I think that if you were going to complain about it in the first place you shouldn't have even been there!!!
There was a sign posted out in the open stating that karaoke would be there that night so you knew good and well what you were getting yourself into!
I was there both karaoke nights and mostly only little kids at the age of 6 to 7 were singing hannah montana, which is something that they love! how could you even put a child down like that??
Being a teenager, I think I speak for all of us when I say that there is really nothing to do in Haysi and that this is a good way to just get out and have a good time!

August 14 2008, 11:41 AM

I would like to say on my behalf and My Parents behalf that we are sorry about the service that you have recieved last night. As for the waitress and the $3 charge, we are sorry for the inconvience for that. The only way that you should have to pay is if you are their for the music and to participate, If you would like to talk about this in person, we would be happy to discuss this with you. The problem will be taken care of and we are sorry once again on our behalf. We hope that you decide to come back in the future. We try to make everyone happy at the Country Cupboard, and once again we are sorry for the inconvience that you recieved.

My Goodness People

August 14 2008, 4:22 PM

I think this place has the right idea. I mean Haysi isnt booming with things to do. Get yourself or your kids into Karoka and sit back and enjoy. If it was Karoka night at Bristol the fee would be 7 bucks per person. I would like to see more places like The Country Cupboard open their doors.

Re: My Goodness People

August 14 2008, 6:15 PM

I agree that there is no booming business in Haysi. Karaoke night is a great idea IF the charges are made known up front like they have a sign posted for band night. I completely understand a charge if someone participates/sings and would be more than willing to pay the three dollars if I were going to sing karaoke. But when you are all of a sudden hit with a ten dollar charge out of nowhere it does discourage one to really think about whether they really want to eat there or not. I again stress my major problem was the fact that My family and I were completely unaware of the charge. The only thing displayed about Karaoke night was that it was 5-8. I think it would be helpful in the future that either signs are posted or at least have an employee make patrons aware of the charge. About the service like I said before everyone has an off night, and there was no problem with the food once the order got straitened out.

extra charges

Bad Bob's in Clintwood has Karaoke night and they dont have an extra charge for you to go in & eat on that night. As for the country cubbard I can understand the extra charge when they have a band because I'm sure they have to pay the band some, but for Karaoke they shouldnt have a charge.

Sounds like to me that the ower is finally getting a taste of her own medicine!!!!!!!! She used to work at the insurance office in Haysi. For lunch they would always call in a order to the Double Kwik. Nothing was never right for them no matter how correct it was. She would complain everyday. Finally she can see how annoying it is for all the complaints no matter how hard you try to please everyone. Went by their today and they dropped the gas prices to $3.54 funny after someone complains how fast they dropped it. I will never stop there even if the sign said free gas because the owners are dirty and don't care for anyone but themselves.

To whom this may be, Double kwik in Haysi has more bad rumors than anyone that I know, but you dont see anyone posting dirty messages on the board about them. We have tried to get this resolved at much as we can. as for the gas well we just happened to get a load in that day, convient uh? As for my mother Well I just think that you need to keep your opinions to yourself, because I could say plenty about Double Kwik like I said before. As for yourself giving our place business thats fine, I respect all peoples opinions.

i personally think that if this all that you have to do is try to belittle good people then you are a terrible person, sometimes in life it is better to keep personal opinions to yourself and not give them out to everyone. i think the owners is wonderful people and they have hearts as big as anyone, and they dropped gas prices because it was time to not because of what you said, and they are not the only people to complain about food, somewhere every day someones order may get messed up. you know i really am proud to know them because they are good decent people, why would you want to say such terrible things about a mother, wife, grandmother, and a great friend. i feel sorry for you because of how you feel towards people, because i know from experience that what goes around comes around.

Out of hand

August 21 2008, 11:21 PM

It seems like this has all gotten out of hand. The post was started because I was infact displeased about the hidden charge and thought that there should have been some sort of flyer or sign letting someone know the costs and specifying that the cost occurs regardless if you sing or not when sitting in the top section,I had no problem paying if I sang like i stated before.Maybe i should have said something then but I didn't and the more I thought about it the madder I became, which tends to happen sometimes with people. The post was not started because i had any ill feelings toward the owner or their family nor did I want them bashed infront of the whole forum. I know in Haysi we all seem to want to take the ball and run with it if given a chance. That is what happens in a small town, you know what they say if you don't know what you are doing in a small town ask someone next to you and I'm sure they can tell you. I have no problem what so ever with the owners of the resturant in fact as far as I know they are good people. I understand they have a responsibility to pay the people they hire with the equipment. As far as the gas goes my opinion you don't want to pay what they are asking find another gas station its as simple as that.
