weather delays/closingsDecember 7 2008 at 11:36 AM | working mother |
| Is anyone else upset over the way that the schools have been called so far this year? I think they are being called too late. Buses have already been in transit and had to be called back or in one instance transport our children on icy roads. I also think when we're on a 2-hr delay, 9:00 is too late to close because there are working parents that have to go on to work and make arrangements. This is jmo, what is yours? |

I must say that I have thought time and time again about posting something similar to this on here. I also think that Dickenson County is too worried about going a few extra days in the summer rather than the safety of our children. Last Monday morning ( I think ) our road was TERRIBLE, but school remained in session. Also, recall the morning that the roads were soooo bad that several people wrecked that morning, some being teachers. I just checked www.wcyb.tv and Buchanan County schools are on a two hour delay tommorrow,,, WHAT? My sister lives in Buchanan County, talked to her about an hour ago, the road that she lives on is still snow covered and slick. I hope they change this before morning. No word about Dickenson on the WCYB site as of yet, but our road is still covered with snow/icy spots and doesn't look hopefull of melting. So, I guess my kid will not attend school tommorrow if they don't call school off. Dickenson County really needs to take into consideration of all areas of Dickenson County including the back roads. They also need to take into consideration of last minute schedule changes, that can just screw any working parents day up. In my own opinion I would rather my child go a few extra days in the summer than put their life in danger because of these roads. |

I totally agree. I just feel like my children's safety is not a priority and I would like to know why and what has changed to cause this and who is making these ridiculous calls. |

What teachers wrecked? I'm not disagreeing with your points about delays and closing, just wondering who wrecked. |

| 2 hr delay tomorrow | December 7 2008, 9:48 PM |
Dickenson County will be on a two hour delay tomorrow.
The people in charge try their best to do what is safest for our children.
Sometimes it will "seem" clear and then start to snow on the ridges just about
time for the buses to start running. At that point, a quick decision has to be
made to continue or close. Then phone calls have to be made to the tv and radio
stations to get the word out, it is also posted on
www.dickenson.k12.va.us
These things can not happen instantly, and they do not want to just take days
off without it really being necessary. It has nothing to do with how many days
of school are made up in June! It has to do with education and the safety of the
children. Working parents should have a plan for any school schedule situation.

They always wait until Wise County calls in to see what they should do, but by then its alittle to late for the buses, I belive the School Board should grow a spine before someone gets hurt! |

One day last week I believe it was, I was watching the channel 5 news and it was still showing a 2 hour delay at the bottom of the screen, I got online and checked the school board website at 9am. The bus runs here at 9:10 when there is a 2 hour delay. After sitting at the bus stop until 9:25 someone pulled over and told me they cancelled school. When I had checked on one website, Dickenson County was the only school that had not been updated since 3pm the day before. The raods were better that day than they were today.
The school board is doing a pretty bad job informing people of the school changes. It's really hard especially on the people that work to try and make arrangements for their children with very little notice. Also really inconvienent on those single parents with smaller children, to have to get everyone up and ready for nothing. The school board could and should do a lot better job with this than what they are. |
