New player needed

by (Login duckyjo)

Hey, everyone. If you haven't noticed that the cath bruig player is being replaced, then you probably should. I need a new player for the cath bruig, so if you know anybody who should play, please have that person email me. We definitely need a person to play that empire.

Right,

To any light players. I seem to be haveing trouble getting messages out to you guys. So if you wish to coordinate with Cov-Scails just mail me.

It seems the southern passes are held, but how well I won't hazzard to guess. And the Dwarves are now cut off. We must get some kind of unified effort going here if we are going to win.

Best regards,

Scouting

by (Login duckyjo)

Okay, before I go out and make rules for the scouting that you people wanted, tell me exactly what you wanted to know from those briefings. Do you want to know what enemies are in nearby territories, do you want to know what the enemies are doing, do you want to know what's happening all the way across the world? what? From whatever you ask of me, I'll negotiate with you on that.

Arcangel: Yup. Picket lines. Personally, I'd have thought the scouts would also be able to find out the most numerous enemy troop type or two, as well as rough army size.

WE NEED TURN BRIEFINGS!

by (Login Archerous)
Forum Owner

This is pretty much a "duh statement", but we need turn briefings, Ducky. This is why it's a "duh" statement: "Duh! How are we stupposed to know what happened last turn!" is the first thought in my brain when realizing how I should coordinate the efforts of the second turn. It reminds me of handing in a big paper to a teacher (especially English or something weird) without knowing the specificiations for that paper to begin with, then being assigned another paper before getting the first one back to know how the teacher wants it to be done…except far worse.

How am I stupposed to know what's happening with a team on the other side of the word or right on my doorstep without even scouts? Those little blurbs on the mainpage, though creative, are hardly informative. Please, just make up little briefings of the basic information to know where things are. Believe it or not, some communications networks aren't working at full efficiency all the time.
What if I'm about to be attacked? I haven't any way of knowing this as things stand.

There's no way we can proceed without those briefings, or an equivalent on the main page.

look here...

by (Login duckyjo)

Okay, I don't know exactly what information you want me to give you, but I've got a lot of info on the pages that are linked to the main Mythwars page. If you look at the bottom, there are links to the Army List page and Territories page. Both pages list the territories each nation controls, and the army list tells which victory conditions have been met by each player and how many vp's he has.

I had a reason for not letting everybody know exactly what is going on in every territory that they don't control, but I think I'm going to change that a bit. I'm going to be making some scouting rules, but that still won't give you all the information that you seem to want. You will have to talk to your teammates and other people to really understand what is going on in places where you don't have any knowledge of. I'll get those scouting rules out soon, and you guys won't have to worry about them, since it will all be behind the scenes stuff.

As for knowing what happened to your things last turn, knowing if you were attacked, etc... The emails I send to you give you all the information that I can give you on your nation. Since nobody lost any territories this turn, except for the ones they deserted, nobody got a whole lot of info in those emails. Once things start getting real nasty, though, I can bet you'll be getting more info.

Okay, since I know I'm not functioning properly in the mental department at the moment, I know there will be more questions passed back and forth. That's why this is a test game, so go ahead and tell me what more you need, and sorry about any complications.

For all those interested

by (Login duckyjo)

HGK, and everybody here, I guess I owe you an apology. Due to what can only be described as a sort of midlife crisis (at age 17, no less, strange eh?) I was too stressed out to do anything for a few days. That and the whole ******* terrorist thingy, I was on hold for a few days.

So here I go. I'm still waiting for a few peoples' turns, and then I'm still going to try to run the game. My life at this point is so stressed that I may just pass out some time and not wake up for a few weeks, but I'm doing what I can. I'm sorry to all of you who are unhappy because I seem to have deserted you, but that is not the case! Thanks for staying around, all of you.

Si vis pacem para bellum

by (Login Soulblighter)

Leifnir with Seven Fists’s patrol arrived at the dead city before dawn . One by one, peasants appeared at the fringes of the forrest and surveyed the remains of their city. Houses gutted by fire, wells poisoned with carrion, what had been sheep that the evening were now spread like a thick jam against the long wall of a barn. The hollow men, perhaps no more than a dozen, had swept through the fields, corrupting all they touched, and the stench they left in their wake was that of a hastily abandoned slaughter house, The peasants spoke in hurried whispers, but one name came through again and again: Soulblighter the Twice Born.

Soulblighter.
Leifnir knew the name well. The most dangerous of the Fallen Lords. Soulblighter’s cruelty and ambition knew no bounds. Many believe that he is Damas, one of Connacht's lieutenants who, while campaigning in the east, learned how to indefinitely prolong his life with human sacrifices and ritual self mutilation. He has disappeared often into the Untamed Lands, sometimes for years at a time, back to the hidden temple where he first studied the black arts; always returning with something more unspeakably evil or singularly malignant than the time before.

One of Leifner’s men ran toward him. "Our scouts are dead!" the man cried. "Soulblighter is here!"

Kai o Adês akoloupsei met autou:

And Hell followed with him.

Okay, first of all... Corners... Well, I figure that if a corner is relatively big, and obviously a corner, I'll allow you to travel between corners. If you all insist

Next thing. Anybody who doesn't get me their first turn orders by September 4 will be considered to be R+Ring all of their generals that turn. The next turn will be due on the 14th. That's because the 14th will be the end of my first week away at school, so things are going to be slow that first week. If I don't hear from you by the 14th, somebody will replace you.

Holy hell!

Don't remind me. It is the last week of summer for me too

I have orders from HGK and Gholsbane right now. Anybody who sent me orders before I sent out the briefings, sorry, but I deleted those before reading them. You'll have to resend them.

By the way, HGK, you need to tell me what the defensive orders are for your territories, even if you're not planning on getting attacked. Also, remember to keep an eye on the map to see where exactly you are.

For the rest of you... I'm not going to force the first turn to be resolved for a little while, because I know most people (including myself) are probably frantically trying to get back in the swing of this nasty thing called school. Once we get the first turn dealt with though, I'll be going through turns once a week at least. No excuses, ifs ands or buttocks.

Oh yeah, and about the scouting reports. I'm not doing those like the last game. Basically, you can look on the territories page on Myth War website to find out who owns each territory, and read the turn's briefings to find out any major events. I'm not going to be telling much more than that. I will tell you what happened on your last turns and all that stuff.

Uhm... yeah, that should do it.

by (Login Archerous)
Forum Owner

We have a problem; there hasn't been one word in at all from James Klauder anywhere since long before the game. If he has other e-mails, someone wake him up, or find him at his usual forum or bnet haunts. None of us can procede without him.

And reallow corners, damnit! It'll make things move more quickly anyway, so we can get to doing that other even cooler version you suggested, with the many-more territories (I'll help with that stuff too, if you like; I'm very interested!), and move onto making version 1.1 of the game (as if the last one were a beta, and this is the full version).

Answer to Archer's question

by (Login duckyjo)

Okay, I'm just starting a new thread because the others are getting too long.

1. Moving into an ally's space... I had and hadn't thought of that. once again I'll say that I don't have a copy of my own special rules right here with me, but I know I don't have anything written about this. How about this: If you move into a territory that an ally is already holding, I will message both you and your ally. If you both agree to allow the second army into the place, the army enters, but gets nothing from the territory. The first person there controls the entire thing... unless he wants to give it up to the other army. If the player that was originally there refuses the other player's access to the territory, the army stays where it came from, and can choose to R+R or recruit.
When moving into an ally's territory, though, it does count as moving, and not as attacking, so you can move farther if you want to.

2. I had thought of that one. I would first randomly choose who gets into the territory first. Then from there, I would say that the second person in is still attacking, but if it is an ally I'd go through the stuff in the previous paragraph. If it was an enemy, I'd choose the defensive orders for the army that got there first (as close to the offensive order they chose to attack the place with), and do the battle between those two armies like that.

3. I'm still not quite decided on that. I think corners are fine, actually. you can move through corners.

Wow, that sounds good for the first two.

But corners? Are you sure? Wow, ok. It'll be a nice fast game, I guess.

And what about the mountains? Is there anything to help impede movement from East to West?

Winter.....

by (Login ArcAngel00)

ok I do hope that the only way to get through the cloudspine is to use the passes. And if so are weather effects caculated..like can the passes be snowed in? And another thing...on year 17 of this war a volcano is suppose to erupt will this happen then? And what of the artifacts in the game...like the watchers arm can the light get that as well as the deceiver?....can is theer a total codex....is there a head....will the head be found on or b4 year 17?...obviously the watchers arm can be found b4 that year....and in this game the watcher finds his dream a lil late I believe (that is if I make it that far). Oh and the eblis stones those are important are they around or in the game? heh basically Im just asking a bunch of questions I dont expect them to be answered, my real objective was to get u thinking about other forces in the game that arent related to the players control...if u hadent already of course.

Yeah....

by (Login duckyjo)

Well... I had thought of artifacts and random events... And I wanted to incorporate them, but I wanted to get the game going smoothly first Okay, so here are answers to the previous things.

Maybe corners should be no good. I made the corners rule because I'm actually planning on running another version of this game sometime soon, except on another world with a map that has instead of the 39 territories that this one does, the other one has 150 something. So how about no corners for this game.

Next... I think artifacts would be great fun, and so would weather... but things may just be a bit too complicated for right now. I think I will think of artifact effects and random events and stuff like that for later, but not incorporate them until I'm convinced that the game is running so smoothly that I won't blast the order of things to mars by introducing yet another new rule.

Another thing... this game is not supposed to be the exact same history as the Great War in myth. It's a parallel universe, so to speak, but may have completely different outcomes... just a bit of fun thought. Okay I'll stop ranting now.

Gah, Ducky!

Corners one time, no corners the next… people are developing strategies around what you say, mb! Lol, I'm sure Ghôlsbane and HGK did as well. Can you keep the corners after all? It's hard to keep track of things…

Cool! Another game like this with a lot more territories is exactly what ArcAngel and I were discussing earlier!

Sounds good otherwise. Are you implementing the one with more territories to be based in the Wolf Age, or should we wait until it comes out and do that?

No. No corners If I change it again it'll be even more confusing

hmm... Wolf Age... I'm really not even planning on getting the game, so I'm just going to keep the map the way it is for now. The game I'm doing with more territories is a completely different world, one that I've been creating for the past two years, and I've been making this war game, a RPG, and a miniatures combat system to go with it. You'd be welcome to join if you really want, but I'm mostly running it for people at my school. I may even need a few of you, since there are 10 or 11 teams and not enough people at school that I can trust to report in quite often. I'll see about that later

The Dark...and gold

by (Login ArcAngel00)

why does the dark need gold to buy troops? The dark shouldnt need gold at all...matter of fact our army size and recruitment should be entirley based on how well of a success rate the dark has in battle. Like lets say that for every 5 kills 1 gets reincarnated into the dark army. or lets say a dark army enters a town and uses a shade to turn the peasents into thrall (like avons grove). remember that the Dark's objective is not to control...its to destroy, to raize, to plunder, to obliterate and poison any and everything in its path. Besides what is a thrall gonna do with gold anyway, Im pretty sure shopkeepers have a sign that reads: No shirt, No shoes, Not alive, No service!

I happen to agree with your reasoning. I thought about this too when I first read it. However, I don't think it means gold in the strictest sense; more a representation of power, energy, and resource. I also doubt that the Light use money for anyone but top mercenaries anyway. Gold is a metaphor to represent banked, reserved work. It can pertain to magic, power, or even gold. I don't think it's any more than a simple analogy.

Fools gold or not.....

by (Login ArcAngel00)

A dark army shouldnt need a metaphoric commodity to show its power. The power for the dark is represented through its brute strength and lack of mercy. Now before this war actually begins, the population of the world has lived 1000 years without a leveler to destroy them. This means that their economic system is in place. Sure they may fight against one another but the Cath Bruig Empire at this time is the greatest empire the world has ever known. I think that its safe to say that the light soldiers are being paid.

I would also like to point out that the start of this war, and the return of connacht as Balor, sybolizes the end of the light era.

regarding the gold thingy...

by (Login duckyjo)

Yeah, I do have to agree with both Archer and ArcAngel. To keep the balance in the game I sort of had to keep everybody's system the same. The thing about gold representing a metaphoric commodity is as good an explanation as it gets. I really can't think of a way to keep the game well-balanced without keeping the monetary systems the same.

So anyway, I don't have a copy of my special rules where I am right now, but I think there's something to the necromancy skill that allows you to recruit undead for cheaper costs, which represents that it really isn't the money, but the magic that makes the undead. I'll look into that when I get back to my home.

Regarding that holiday weekend thing that Archer was talking about... Well, I guess this week or next week is when everybody goes back to school. I head back on labor day, and a lot of first year college students are heading back last week or next week... so that might be it. Reitterating a prior thingy, I understand that not everybody can be around all the time, but I also say that anybody who's playing this needs to try to be around very very often.

So far, people who I can think of who are replying quickly to things are Arcangel, Archer, HGK, and... I can't remember any others. I do hope most people are around more than it looks like

by the way... what's with the stupid censoring? What's wrong with bitch ass **** **** cock slut whore? (just testing to see which ones work) We're all big boys now, aren't we? hehe,

Reitteration

by (Login Archerous)

Hey, all. I just wanted to reitterate the problems I and other Mac users had with the briefings and other downloadable documents that Duckyjo sent out.

We Mac users can't read ".doc" documents, quite simply, and need something universal like simpletext. We hope you can find a solution as soon as possible.

another reiteration

by (no login)

For those of you who have not heard this (Archer must have at least twice if he's read his email yet), guess what platform those documents were created on? From the guesses that all of you seem to have made, you're wrong.
Also, for those of you who have not had much experience in cross-platform files, documents can be opened with any word processor no matter which one created them. Usually, from what I last heard, every computer (any OS) comes with a word processor of some sort: claris works, appleworks, and ms word are the most common. Last I checked, they all read each others' documents almost perfectly. The only problem I've ever run across is that sometimes by double-clicking a document that your computer does not recognize on the desktop it will not open. In that case you must open it manually with the file menu in your word processor.

When I hear from everybody that that does not work, then I will do it some other way, but I'm not about to go doing things the hard way when I don't have to (ask me about that part later)

Not any one of the applications in my computer can open .docs. It's a strange format to begin with…especially for a mac…even for a PC…

I don't have MSWord. I don't have ClarisWorks (of any use). I have AppleWorks 5.0.3. Is there some application or updater available for my unique situation, or even a version of Simpletext, that I can use which can read .docs? I know the AppleWorks 6.2 Updater can read them, but one needs 6.0 first before updating (I know, i tried, all 14.5 megs on my ultra-slow 56K…what a waste of time and effort). How can I get 6.0?

Someone, please, help, for I can't access any of the imperative information for MythWars until I get some program to open .docs.

Why not AppleWorks?

by (Login Archerous)
Forum Owner

Ducky, since you have a mac, couldn't you just send the mac people the documents in AppleWorks format? I hate special treatment, but I still don't have my information, and it's only four days before I have to send you my turn moves.

A question regarding the game:

Can units or groups of units be active and moved without a general, or does a general need to command all units.
Basically, how bound are the units to the general? Do all of my units have to stay connected to Balor at all times?

last thing. And it's going to be done.

by (Login duckyjo)

All right. I give up, and apologize for all of this bull**** that I've put everybody through. I just uploaded a group of semi-breifing in text files. It's under the same zip file as the old ones. Just go there and download it. If those don't work it's something wrong with my computer. These new briefings leave out a bunch of info, so you guys are only going to have your generals' starting locations, skills, territories, and troops.

I'm going to be away for half the weekend. I think I'm going to semi-delay things. Here's how it will work: By Labor Day (sept 3) I will have done at least one turn. Rules discussions at this forum (by the way, I really like having the forum, even more than I thought I would), and all sorts of stuff can go on in the meantime.

Regarding Archer's question: troops are stuck in the regions that they are in. They are not bound to a general, per se, but can only be moved by a general and attack with the help of a general. They are bound more to their territory than to the general, but can really do nothing without the help of a general. Your general chooses which troops go with him from the territory when he does things. If you take all of your troops out of a territory, you no longer control the territory, so that's something you don't want to do. Does that make things clearer? Ask away if not.

Wohoo!

by (Login Archerous)

They work wonderfully, Ducky! Thanks! I'm so happy now…trusty, trusty simpletext…ah, I shan't ever doubt it's glorious cababilities in its delightful simplicity again!

I'm very glad you like the forum! Anything to give ya a break, working so hard to make this game for us .

Ah, I understand perfectly what your saying, and I think that rule is perfectly valid; I like it a lot. I have a couple additional questions:

•If I am moving from my territory into a territory controlled by an ally, am I still attacking? I don't want to attack my ally (but it's sometimes necessary to combine allied armies or move through allied territory). Do we then divide the spoils equally between the number of players in that territory?

•(hypothetical) : I am in the North Barrier Desert territory. I send in my orders to move to the West Barrier Desert. Simultaneously, the North Barrier Desert is attacked. Are my units (with general) kept from moving from the territory and forced to stay and defend the North Barrier?

•Just to make sure, movement from territory to territory is only via adjacent territories; that is, only from one territory to another if both have sides which are flat against each other, right? not via the corners; like a Rook, not like a Queen?

little things to remember

by (Login duckyjo)

Okay, I'm just posting this to make sure everybody knows (I'm not sure how clear my rules are, since I really haven't read them since writing them off the top of my head and editing them quite often)

First of all, please remember when sending your turns to me to put the defensive orders of each region you control in the orders, and the orders for each general in there.

Second of all: don't forget that you can't technically "move" into a region you don't control. You have to attack those regions, even if there are no troops in those regions (you never know if there are or not). Just a minor technicality. Also, when attacking, don't forget offensive orders for your general, and which units he is taking with him.

Third: I have ****load of stuff (oops, pardon the swahili) that I absolutely need to do this year, so Myth Wars is my recreation, which means my mind is not always functioning when I do things Don't hesitate to remind me if I've forgotten a victory condition for your nation, or if there's something wrong with the briefing I give you, or whatever. Just try to be patient. Remember, for every order that you send in I've got to deal with nine other players' orders, and figuring out how those orders effect the other players, and lots of other stuff... okay, there's my preemptive excuse, hopefully I won't have to give it to you later

Thanks, and adios. Just get me your orders when you can.
