a man of his times. He is a barbarian, a general of a great and successful army who eventually brings Rome to it's knees and as a result of Rome's downfall cause the split-up of the Empire into half with the great Roman general taking up the Eastern portion of the once Roman empire and establishing the city of Constantinople in what is now Turkey.

This is normal behavior to him--discipline had to be enforced as his power in some manner and by setting example by the use of one man it enforced his position as their leader and general. OK enough history lesson....on to the next chapter...tonight.
