I go to HTML goodies when I have a brain fart and can't remember certain codes. Its got great tutorials and lists just about every code there is {i've seen some its missing} better then any book I've ever glanced through.
As for where to store it here's a couple of links to free home page housers
Geocities my personal choice
angelfire
tripod
Fortunecity
Cybercity
Acme City
free web
Gurl Pages
Crosswinds

Thos are all the housing sites I have bookmarked. Either one is good it just depends on really your preferance. And as for where to place pictures and the like. Thats up to you. There's nothing that says you can't put a picture in a certain spot, there are only things that suggest you don't.

The biggest suggestion I have for you is.... show it to someone before you publish it. What I normally do is I make a test.html page and I show that to whoever has offerd to beta it for me. I have people on different modem speeds and browsers check it. How fast it downloads, is it to clutterd to them, can they read the page. Its helped me put out some decent products on the web. Sometimes its better to have someone who isn't you look at it because you wont be the one just surfing into the page, it'll be people you know and people you don't know so it has to be easy on them to browse, it helps if you like it of course :?).

Thats basically all I can give you in way of advise. If you would like more help feel free to e-mail me {please use this account hockeylander@earthlink.net }. I'm not the worlds greatest teacher {just ask anyone I've tried to teach} and I'm not even the best web designer out there. But I'll do my best to help if ya want it.

Oh some quick things that could drive people viewing your site nuts {these are MHO though}. Don't have autostart music. Thats music that automatically starts up upon loading of the page. Some people get booted out by that and others are browsing from work and its not really a good thing for them to go to a page and suddenly music starts playing. Bright backgrounds aren't a good thing because they tend to distract people from the text on the page. Huge pictures that take for ever to load are bad. If you have a really big picture then either shrink it down so its small and condensed or make a thumb nail of it so people can click on it and see the larger version.

Good luck! Its a ton of fun!
