Picnic at Bordeaux VIII

by

"What the hell are you doing here?" Dawson asked me, with a surprised look.

I held up my scotch and soda. "Drinking."

"I can see that. You know what I mean."

"I guess I do."

Of course I knew what he meant. I had done a fast fade after the explosion. But then, there was a lot I had to do. Change my identity. Get new papers. Play around with my bank accounts (lots of fun there...betweeen English, my truly abhorrent French and non-existent German...and remembering not to touch anything I held under my former legal ID.)

But my "disappearance" only lasted two weeks.

I sighed. "I had to come back. I couldn't let it go. I can't go home again....like they say. And...if there is a possibility of the virus still being out there.... or if...."

But then I felt the presence, and looked up. Methos. Exactly who I hoped I'd see. Dawson nodded to both of us, and made his way back to the bar.

Methos took the seat across from me at the table.

"Howdy," I drawled. He looked a little different to me. As if he hadn't slept. As if he'd been thinking.

"There was no virus...the device was just..."

"I know. I saw."

"It blew chunks out of the cement. If ...someone...had been standing in front of it..."

"That person would be blown apart. In pieces," I finished. But I had done it. They were both out of the way when it went off--probably just got a little singed...and we can deal with that.

"How did you know?"

"I didn't. I just thought," and here I hesitated. Did he need to know this? "It wasn't about the world. Or power. It was about you. The Horsemen. It was about what was."

His eyes widened, but he said nothing, so I went on.

"Besides, you swore an oath to him that you would kill MacLeod. You told me as much...but you were on MacLeod's side, and that meant you were betraying Kronos. I can't imagine what he felt...but if that were me, I'd want you dead."

He nodded, but then looked at me strangely.

"You cared for him, didn't you? You loved him?"

Strange. I didn't know how to answer that. Once, I'd have said, "Yes," and it would have been past question, but now, I wasn't so sure. Maybe there wasn't a word for what I felt for Kronos. I cared for him, wanted him, almost understood him, but if I loved him, wouldn't I have been by his side when he asked me? Or wouldn't I have taken out MacLeod and Methos? Or wouldn't I have....been able to answer the d@mn question?

But doing any of those things was impossible.

Forget world destruction. Apocalypse--whatever. The virus--nuts.

Maybe Love is the real Beast.

THE STATE OF THINGS
by J. D. McSloy

Every wound

is ultimately mortal,

and every scar--

permanent,

and every passion--

endless,

and every breath--

final;

for right now I can tell you

just what wounds I am dying of,

and every scar I have had,

though unseen, I can show you;

I can conjure any passion,

once fresh, into life again,

and every breath I take stops--

before I take another.

(Thought it had a Immortal-sound to it.)

Excerpts from TTIJ, Methos, from Ch. 5 and on...

by

Methos was having a difficult time getting on the plane without the Watchers seeing him. It made him feel paranoid.

"Just six more hours flight
time and I’ll be in Paris." He thought, sinking
into his seat and truning the small light off. He hoped no one would disturb him, except maybe the stewardess.

He had discovered something that troubled him. "What a hell of a mess this was turning into with the Watchers taking out Immortals for the money."

The Watchers had elected a new president only last
year. He was the best choice. No one could have
foreseen what the man would turn into.

Methos wondered what could have triggered this behavior and why the other Watcher chapters didn't stop it.
Falling asleep in moments, he dreamt of his reign as one of the four horsemen. A time when he rode without a conscience.
That time had so many advantages he
couldn't count them all. He, Methos, was treated with
fear and respect. He kept obedient and beautiful
slaves. He didn’t have to fear the other Immortals
he rode with. His wishes were always fulfilled.

As he relived the glory days, he wanted it all.
Methos wasn’t aware that in his dreams, Ahriman
was feeding on his desires and began to channel
them in another direction.

Then Methos started seeing horrible things. His
friends torn apart. Himself in chains and beaten.
A voice continually saying. "MacLeod did this to
you. You must destroy him!" Methos gasped for air
and woke up.

The plane was descending and he realized he had
slept the whole time. Wiping the perspiration from
his face he felt so strange thinking of the dream.
He had never dreamt of anything so vivid or
disturbing.

Picnic at Bordeaux VII

by

"What is this?" Methos asked, still heading for the device.

"Look," I tried to explain, "just, don't touch the device...I'm....serious." Things were getting strange around me. I was dying one of those near-deaths, and it wasn't pleasant.

"He would have died that night anyway," Methos said. I know what he meant, but that wasn't why I was doing this...I leveled the gun at him as best I could and took dead-aim for the center of his chest. He staggered backwards, and I was propelled by the recoil back against the railing. I gripped it for support. I had another shot to take.

I braced myself, and took aim at the device. Once hit, there was a moment when I could almost feel kinetic energy in the air, and I threw myself over the railing. The sky shook as a concussive blast went off. Falling, I could see a jet of flame, black smoke. The sound....

The water seemed as hard as concrete as I hit it, icy cold. I was going into blackness, fading. I let the water envelop me and went down. To nothingness.

When I awoke, I was cold, wasted, wet. But I still had my head, and a grocery-list of things to do before I rested. I looked back at the crowd that had gathered, and the wreckage. I hoped I had left them clear enough....

But then, I hoped for a lot of things.

I hoped I'd be able to go home again...but let's face it, I couldn't. I hoped I could leave this behind me, but...honesty-time--how? I hoped they would understand, but some people don't take to being shot very well.

For the time being, the trick would be to disappear.

I did see your post. Although Methos isn't the main character, because I have all the characters playing major plots, can't play favorits. He is a very good guy to manipulate into and out of trouble. My fiction runs the length of a novel at 70,000 word count for the frist story. The continuation will probably run as long. Sorry, I can't write short ones. I have co-written one with Lone Writer that is a short story that is a Raven/Highlander crossover. Methos isn't the main character, but Connor is.

Well, it's good fun anyway. :-)

Picnic at Bordeaux VI

by

We were leaving the scene--for me, not a moment too soon. I could picture staying there and letting the walls speak to me some more and going mad. This I would not do. I trailed behind, though, so they could not see me tuck the Berretta back into the back of my jeans.

You see, a girl really *can't* be too careful.

"So he *casually* mentions that he means to explode a vial in the reservoir...and you FORGET?" MacLeod was chiding, in the needling voice we can only forgive when our friends use it.

"You know, when that sort of thing happens to my Gran, we call it a 'senior moment'," I commented, unhelpfully.

They both turned to look at me. I shrugged. "Joke?"

As if you can't see the humor.

We were climbing stairs up into a maintenance shaft in the reservoir...searching for what we were sure was there--a device, probably smaller than your average bread-box...which nonetheless would still contain the still-active virus ("Air-borne..type-four,"I warned them..."contaminating the water? Heck...it would create devestation for miles." And it would.)

We slipped through a portal, and out onto a landing protected by a rail. Below us, the water sparkled, above, the sky looked perfectly blue. We scanned the walls...where would it have been placed so that no one had come across it in three years? And then, Methos spotted it.

Such a common-looking device, no different from common incendiaries placed in the cars of foreign diplomats in odd corners of the earth...or any place you wanted a nice, controlled explosion...but something about the appearance of it disturbed me....

It was all wrong! some voice nagged at me...deep in my gut.

There was a panel with buttons....

"He had it rigged to a remote control device," Methos said..."There should be a way to disable it if we knew the code."

"If his sense of humor hung from the same gallows as mine, he'd have picked '666,'" I said numbly, not sure what we were about to do...my gut still screaming at me.

Methos moved towards it, and then, some reflex took over on me. "Don't!" I yelled, and when he ignored me, out came the Berretta.

"This isn't right..." I said..."Something about this doesn't seem right."

I could see MacLeod out the corner of my eye, darting for me. I turned, and pumped two shells into his chest. Instinct....the little voice I always listened to right or wrong....had taken over, and for a moment I looked on what I'd done in horror, my hand on needles and pins from the force of the recoil.

I wasn't expecting the recoil...I should've. The Berretta was a compact weapon, with a scant 3 lb. trigger pressure...the reason for my choice, but it was, after all, a .45. And I did all my range practice on a .22.

Like the one Methos then nailed me with.

Picnic at Bordeaux V

by

MYSTERIUM.

It was an apt name, albeit a bit more ominous in the hands of the Horsemen, I grant you. But I didn't know that then. I called it that because I didn't understand how it worked, I only knew it could bring about the end of the world. That, and that I could make a boatload of money if I wanted to peddle it as a germ-warfare weapon. (The Beast I'd ride the back of, if I were more desperate.)

I knew it was immoral to maintain my notes...didn't matter. The greed was there. And also a touch of pride at having created something so destructive... notwithstanding the rows of lab animals I had to burn and discard...regardless of the thought that if it existed, it might someday be used.

But after its creation, I never wanted to enter a lab again. I never wanted to work on a cure, because I realized it was beyond me to undo what I had done. I wiped my files except for one disk, which I gave to Kronos. And, except for reading with interest any news items about disease outbreaks in foreign parts of the world, some part of me always suspected that he wouldn't be the one to unleash it. I couldn't tell you why.

"What I do know," I finished, "is that it is nearly indestructible. No known cure."

"None?" MacLeod asked, his face grim.

"It is....Immortal. It was created with my own tissue. The secret lies in the twelfth chromosome...the genetic clock. It programs the telomeres...the telomeres of our cells never decay. We never grow old...the virus never dies. The idea was...gene therapy. To....add to the human gene pool."

"But you never counted on immune response," Methos said, as if anyone would have simply picked up on it.

I winced. "No. I never did. Anymore than I counted on it's being used...especially by him....he knew...."

I could remember him almost ensuring me it would never come to this. How did I believe him? How did I trust him? Simple. I cared for him, and I thought I understood him. Pride again.

But the thought was in my head now...to try to understand. To put myself in the moment. Methos had said it when he related the story--his contribution, "Start small, and build." Which meant there would be another device, and another potential payload of the disease.

"The fountain," I said, hoping I could focus..."You said one was put in the fountain...yours...the one MacLeod diffused?"

"Yes, but..." Methos was startled, as if the same thought was crossing his mind.

"And the next one? The water system, you said?"

"OH,----."

Which I took to mean that there was another one.

Horseman Writing Challenge

by

If anyone should decide to accept:

I'm looking for additions to Tales from the Horsemen's Camp, which is a a specialised page within Camp of the Horsemen.

It deals specifically with 'Camp Life.' The time frame doesn't have to be Bronze Age, it can be anytime that the Horseman made Camp together.

If you think you might be interested in writing something specifically for that page, please let me know. If you have already written something that may fit, I'd love to hear about it! (There are some things I've read here that I would love to archive...)

The Tales site does feature an Adult warning due to violence and or material of a sexually explicit nature. Your work does not have to meet either of those criteria.

There is one restriction, however.... No slash...
I have nothing against it (and I read everything), however it was decided that COTH would not be archiving it.

Full Circle chapter 19 first half

by

Chapter 16 Italy

Grayson sat apart from his army, his horse slowly picking his way through the now demolished village, which had been ravaged, and it’s villagers either killed or rounded up until he gave the orders that determined their fate. His eyes glanced at the bodies which lay upon the ground in a jumbled pile, an occasional woman or child mixed in with the men and boys that had died.

Smoke rose skywards from the burning wreckage of houses that had once stood proudly around a small square. On one end of town a sheep and goat pen stood but instead of holding animals, it held the remaining women and children and it was to the pen that he directed his horse.

Soldiers scurried about their duties pausing to give a quick salute as he passed; some still were seen fighting those who continued to resist between the alleys and streets. One could hear the fighting better than one could see it but it nevertheless was evident that this battle was still not quite over with.

His hose carried him around the parameter of the pen; he eyed the wailing and sobbing women with a jaundiced eye. Ignoring the pleas for mercy from the prisoners, his attention was drawn to a young woman who sat impassively in a corner of the pen, nursing a child from her full, ripe breast, rocking the child as she did so. She intrigued him; for all the commotion that was going on around her, she seemed to have a quiet sort of dignity and calm.

One of the guards came up to him, saluted, and then asked what the next order was in regards to the prisoners. Instantly, one side of his mouth curled upwards in a cruel half grin then replied as his eyes shifted from one prisoner’s face to another, “ Kill them all when I leave the area but leave one alive so that Rome shall know who did this.” He stretched out his arm and pointed at the woman in the corner. “Bring her to me. Now!”

She was brought to him immediately and he bent down from his horse to cup her chin in his hand turning her face this way and that to get a better look at her. The child in her arms began to stir then cry, drawing Grayson’s attention to it. His eyes flew from the child to the woman, then back to the child. He softly smiled at the baby as he touched its’ cheek gently.

His face turned towards the soldier who held the woman in place. “Bring her to my tent,” he ordered in the guttural Goth tongue, then glanced at the woman and spoke in his native Latin that he had spoken when he had been younger and mortal. “No need to fear me, lady. You shall live as your child shall.” He gave her a half smile, and in a flash of movement, scooped the child out of her arms and into his own and galloped away.

Once he was out of range of hearing the mother’s pleas for her child as well as the screams of the women and children as the soldiers slaughtered them, he stopped the horse and tended to the child who wailed loudly and fiercely for its mother. He clucked his tongue at the boy, hushing it in a quiet tone in Latin while rocking it into a quiet calm. Soon he had boy gazing solemnly at his face, while one hand clutched at Grayson’s long, thick braids that swung with each movement of the horse as he made his way towards a lone spot that looked south.

When he arrived, he picked the child up so that he was eye to eye with him then turned the child around to face southward. “Look upon this world, little one,” Grayson half whispered to the child. “All that you know, all that was before now will soon be gone.” He turned the child back towards him. “Look at me.” His voice rose in volume as he continued, “I am the destroyer of it all!”

The child began to wail loudly at the pronouncement.

Picnic at Bordeaux IV

by

And we all have our emotions, and right then mine were ripping me apart. I looked up to where MacLeod had pointed, the spot where Kronos died, and I tried to imagine that moment when he ceased...a thing I couldn't imagine. I tried for a moment to fix on what it must have been, to see Methos turn, to know it was the end--or, knowing him, did he reject that with his last breath?

But I couldn't be in that moment, no matter how I tried, and instead my memory handed back to me the picture of him standing in my kitchen at the moment when the decision was mine...to go with him. To let him use the virus. I could have chosen to be there--with him, at the end. Instead he had *them*--the Horsemen. What he had wanted.

But I didn't, now, did I? I was here, with the two men who pulled off his death, trying to save the world, as if that made any g-d-d@mn sense.

"Geez, "I remarked, gathering myself together. "Enough about me. Just keep in mind...."

MacLeod nodded. He didn't seem to need to be told; he simply understood that I would hear no more. And Methos looked away. If I thought I knew what he was...I must have been wrong. There was no understanding him. But I wasn't there to try to figure out his deal, I was....

"The virus, you gave him the plan...." MacLeod began, trying to edge it all back to the do-able. Let's handle the matter at hand.

"The means to an end," I answered, with a short laugh.

"It had no name, it had no cure," Methos said, "Only a code name, 'MYSTERIUM.'"

And then, remotely, in the back of my mind, I heard the words of one of my professors. "You know, the trouble with dealing with you idiot savants is I never know if I'm talking to the savant...or the idiot."

Did they honestly think I knew of any way to stop this thing?

I looked at them, a little mystified. Why the heck would I know how to stop it? I mean, outside of blundering hugely enough to create it in the first place?

"'Mysterium?'" MacLeod echoed.

I began to explain....

Announcement(important to me...need advise...)

by

...Wow, it's been kinda busy since the last time I posted; I got kicked in the a** pretty hard by RL this week...

My Josh is back, and we had a lot to discuss. We're getting married sometime very soon; just a quick little wedding; we'll have the real wedding next year. Right now we need to collect BAQ and Seperate Rations. Why? Well, we do love each other(we wouldn't do it this way if we didn't) and because in about 8 months there's going to be a little one arriving courtesy of Stork Delivery Inc....

D*** Ft Riley water. Gets everybody. Sigh. And I was *not* like those other silly Army chics. Anyway. I don't know, guys; I think we're doing it right. I swore up and down I wouldn't do what my parents did, but, well...What do you think? I really would like some advise. We've only told a few people so far; I still have to tell my chain of command(oh joy). Help me out, please; I need to talk to somebody. If the game goes slow again(which I'm doubting) I'll try to get back down here.

Thanks.

OH sweetie ((((((HUGS)))))))

by

It's not the water that got you that way and you know it. I'm not comdemning you by any long stretch of the imagination but hoping that you understand what the consequences will bring.

*sigh* Where do I begin?

It's good to know that the two of you want to do the right thing now but have you considered the future? What feels like the right thing now isn't necessarily right later in the years to come. Love ebbs and flows in tides of passion, indifference, and freindship plus many gray areas throughout your life.

If the only thing you are getting married for is the sake of the child and to give the child a last name think twice. That child needs more than a name--it needs a family with the means to love and support him/her now and in the future. And that is a heavy burden to bear both financially and emotionally for both people involved let alone for the child.

If you really think that your relationship has the ability to withstand the long separations between the two of you, the low pay the Army gives
you, the everyday stresses and strains that couples go through then I would say go for it. But if you have the tiniest shred of doubt about it, go see the chaplin and talk it over with him.

Most of all, trust your instincts on the matter. If you think deep down that there will be problems, try to talk it out with Josh but at the same time, listen to what is being said to yourself in both your head and heart. It could save you a lot of heartbreak and pain later.

Try to look at the matter objectively. Think things through for both now and for the future. If you don't then another point in time might be too late to do it. And Josh may not do it at all.

It's good that he wants to accept his responsibility now but he might grow tired of it later. He might think he's doing you and the child something grand but is he old enough and mature enough for parenthood? And you have to ask yourself if you are too.

Hard questions I know but only the two of you can answer them. Trust me on these things, dear. I've been married 3 times and if anyone had given me this advice before I got married then I might have saved myself a lot of heartache and pain.

Email me if you want to talk more, OK?

((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))

I care what happens to you.

Can't seem to get to the e-mail, so...

by

...Thanks, Cel. Believe me, that's not an easy decision for me to make. There have been many a time I thought my parents were married simply because of my untimely conception and we all would have been better off if they hadn't given in to their familys' ideas of honor and right. I thought about this the whole time Josh was on leave, and so did he. Neither one of us considers abortion an option *at all*. Never would I consent to that, and he would never forgive me. Adoption...I find it hard to think of giving away my baby to strangers, whether I'd keep in contact or not. I just couldn't live like that, wondering...Josh doesn't want his child living with feelings of abandonment, even if later they realized why we could do that, for their best interest. Having Josh try to raise the baby by himself(he'll be almost ETS'd out by the time s/he's born), or me stay in and be a single Army Mom...No. Give it to either one of our parents or other relatives? Oh, h*** no. They've already screwed up raising us and our siblings; besides, it's not really fair to them.

Josh and I get along beautifully. We think on the same wavelength. We were a thousand miles apart, and came to the same conclusion. No woman(that I know of) goes into a relationship without thinking "Is this the guy I want to spend the rest of my life with?" Josh doesn't believe in spending more than a few weeks with someone unless he feels he can deal with her on a long-term, if not permanent, basis. He's said he's seriously considered marrying me before; he's told me and others this. On an intellectual basis, I know what the pros and cons, risks and rewards are. I know in my heart what they are, and I'm willing to risk it, and not just for the sake of the name.

I appreciate the advise. My parents have toughed it out through 20 years and 3 kids; Josh's parents were never even married. We'd like to say we've learned from our folk's mistakes, but so far that's not true. We want very much to change that.

Sorry this got so long, and sorry for any misprints; crappy keyboard:)

ATTENTION! If you've adopted from the HL Adoption agency and placed a link

by

with your name that resides at geocities and you plan on moving it I'm taking a page out of Quinks book and asking you to e-mail me the new URL, your name listed on the adoption page, the person you adopted from and your number if you can remember it. If there are any other updates let me know then too. Send it ONLY to hockeylander@earthlink.net with ADOPTION UPDATES in the subject line. Thats where I have all my adoption mail going to so I want to keep it that way.

For the record the adoption agency will NOT be moving. The only time its going to move is when I get my own domain name {either next year or when I get out of college. Depends on something right now}

So please E-mail me 'cause I don't go through the links myself so I'd hate to have a broken link up there that nobodies told me about.

Another recommendation for the ROG Fan-fic Club...

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater, MW #4

One of my favorite places to check out fan-fic is The Seventh Dimension. In there is a bunch of stories by a very talented writer, Amanda-r. "Oh, To Be Like A God" is a very amusing story about Methos whooping it up at a college campus party. But the one I highly recommend is "Heat Goes To Cold". It is written in a very unusual and uncommon 2nd person present point of view. And she does it well! A very prolific writer that knows how to stir the soul and envoke vivid images and deep emotions! I recommend reading ALL Amanda-r's stories!

Picnic at Bordeaux III

by

"What in hell?" MacLeod began.

"I made a promise to Kronos that if the s--- hit the fan, I'd waste the b------ that took his head. And it did. And I wanted to. Waste you, that is."

"If everyone who promised Kronos they would kill MacLeod went and did it..." Methos commented. I ignored him.

I lowered the gun at that point. I smiled. I had their attention.

"I guess the world is full of people who don't keep promises." I raised the gun again. "What do you make of me? He meant something to me. I gave something to him.... that no one else could have ever taken from me. And what he did for me...." A lump was forming in my throat. "Within hours of my meeting him he completely and irrevocably changed my life...this means something to me."

"Joe told me...he killed you...your first death," Methos said. "It must have been..."

"I'd have died that night anyway."

What did you think you'd hear? I had run up a huge bar tab that night, and when Kronos rolled up behind me offering sex and scotch, and I looked into his eyes, and that fascinating face that still looked like he got the worst out of a knife-fight...do you suppose I'm stupid? No. I realized the danger and I didn't care. You heard one version, but the simple fact is, I looked into his face and thought..."What the hell? As good a way to die as any." And to his hotel room I went. Lucky me. Otherwise I'd have drank myself to death, and who knows if that would've done the trick.

"I didn't want to live...but afterwards, I couldn't die."

"He put a knife in you...that hotel room had blood stains, and signs of a struggle," Methos intoned. Did he really have time to get the Watchers' abridged version of the tale?

"He said we were the same, and he was right," I said, and I lowered the gun for good. I put it on the table between MacLeod and myself. "The same. And maybe I didn't know what it meant then, but I do now." And the funny thing was, I did. I understood why he did it.

Complete and total emptiness. Need. Desperation.

And these were the things that made him live. And these were the things that kept me alive.

Need.

It was hitting me in waves, memories. I was seeing it in perspective for the first time instead of simply feeling. Why did I hold on to the formula for the virus? Why did I go to meet Kronos? Why did I leave my home and come to Paris?

Need. I needed to.

We all have our reasons.

Picnic at Bordeaux II

by

Imagine it being early in the morning and seeing for the first time the place where the one person who had the biggest impact on your life died, feeling alone and miserable...imagine doing it in the presence of the man who killed him, and the man who should have been at his side. Imagine doing it on little sleep, no coffee, even...and feeling insanity crowding at your thoughts. Imagine the stillness of a place left as a museum, a silent testimony to our ability to impact mortals' lives. Imagine me. Forgive me if you can. I can't.

They were both there, and made a running commentary while I was afraid to speak. I saw the cages...imagined that this was where he worked on it...made sure it would do the job. Among the cages was one larger...I could not imagine what animal lay in that one. It was dark, gloomy, even, a kind of...I don't know...military something. To me...it was...hell.

I tried to follow their explanations...here the one they called Silas was killed, above...Kronos died. And there was a female, I took her to be MacLeod's friend...she would have killed Methos...I tried to follow, but it was as if the walls spoke to me...and I listened. I was full of visions, and....How could I listen to them? How could I see it utterly from their side? Who were they to me?

And then MacLeod spoke the word I hoped would never come..."Insane."

"We're all insane, MacLeod...all," I said, suddenly, snapped from my reverie.

"He wanted to destroy...everything..."and the way he said it, so full of belief that Kronos was about nothing but that hate...when I was there when he spoke of the feeling of taking the reins in hand and feeling that those reins guided the world--Did he hate it? Or was it simply the power that he loved, and yearned for the old ways? Do we look at this grey world and imagine it better for being less openly barbaric? O r would it be less barbaric if we could feel the pain....see the human side of the suffering power can cause?

"He wanted...as if you could know what he wanted..." I spat. "He wanted a return to what was...and Methos at his side. He wanted a thousand things...but the end of the world? The deaths of millions? Could he have seen it, let alone wanted it?" I asked, and felt my voice growing shrill.

"Are you defending him?" His eyes were so surprised. As if defending him was past thought...absurd. Before I knew it, I had reached for the .45, and held it before his face. Methos stepped back, and MacLeod would have done something foolish, I'm certain, but then I cocked it, and I'm sure my face showed no sign of wanting anything more than taking half his head from his neck with one blast.

"Defend him?" I asked, and my own voice shocked me. "I would have done more than defend him. You have no idea. Defend him...avenge him, even."

I still remembered. I would always remember. I made a promise I could never keep, but I could sure speak my peace...and I would!

Hi everyone...weird week...

by

...Monday was fairly normal. Tuesday I had to go to the rifle range again. I qualified in April, but they screwed up my scores. I didn't make it this time. Oh well. Wednesday I had CQ duty, so I had off Thursday-which was great, because we had a change-of-command; we have a new battalion commander. This morning we had safety classes at 125th's motorpool(we have a seperate motorpool from the rest of the battalion; closer to our barracks, too!), and this afternoon we have classes with the new Lt.Col. Saturday, Monk and I are going to get my car fixed, Sunday I have CQ again, so I'll have off Monday, a PT test Tuesday, then the 4-day weekend, with Josh coming home from Pittsburg on Thursday and a LARP on Saturday...Whew. I'm busier than I thought I'd be. I thought with Josh on leave, I'd actually be able to get things done...Yeah, right.

Vix, I didn't get one of the frus on your post, but I think I know which one it is. The Kronos one is yummy. HI MORGANA!! Miss-ed you! Have fun when Hubby came home*g*? Gotta go; things to do before formation.

Picnic at Bordeaux

Duncan MacLeod has a face like a prayer from an angel...honest, beautiful, and it works! He is male beauty personified, his features are...expressive, sensual, he is amazing. I could find no fault with him, when I met him, and I looked so diligently...I wanted him to be evil, or prudish, a puritan, a wretch...but he was a man, and a d@mn good-looking one. I revised my impression. He killed Kronos. I loved Kronos. But I knew what Kronos was, and I could accept that someone might have killed him. Even if the thought made me bleed inside.

Methos was his friend, and this, too, I could accept. But you can imagine how quiet I was...I didn't want to reveal anything, and also...I admit it...I was beat. I hadn't eaten in some time. I barely had a chance to sleep. I thought about my husband, my family, such as they were. I came here thinking of killing someone, and now he was....real to me.

And once the details of our quandry were clear, it was Duncan MacLeod who knew where we must go, where we must turn.

To Bordeaux. To the place where the story ended. To see what was left, and to find out what the renegade Watchers might know.

Something told me this would be a painful trip.

SLASH

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater, MW #4

Just a little something to get some conversation started as well as satiate my curiosity. Why is it that most of the slash fan-fic out there are written by women? And why? I have nothing against homosexuality but when it's between two people who are clearly homosexual. But I can't see it between Methos and MacLeod. Well, Methos, yes, but not Duncan. MacLeod was raised as a "manly man" of the very strict Catholic religion. I really can't see him even pondering on such a thought about himself. Methos on the other hand is way old and lived through times when homosexuality was widely accepted.

JMHO I think it's written by women because

by

it's not something most men feel comfortable with or a subject that isn't considered as taboo as homosexuality. Women have a tendancy to humanize the characters when they write and can empathize with them whereas men get very uncomfortable when the subject of male-male sex is brought up, let alone placed on paper in enough detail that the imagination can go into overload with the images of the act itself.

We have been conditioned since we were children that homosexuality isn't normal, that it is a sin and the people who practice it are perverts and should be put away so they can't harm anyone. There's a misapplied social standard to the openly gay population as well as a deep seated discrimination and predjudice.

The heterosexual population at large follows the traditions of hearth and home--a HETEROsexual hearth and home scenario. Anything else besides that isn't considered "normal" and should be castigated for things the gay couple do behind closed doors in the privacy of their home.

I personally think that many of those who read slash or write it, read into the ambiguity of DM/ROG's relationship subtle tones of homoerotica. Frankly, I watch their relationship and write various stories dealing with them as people and I don't see anything of the kind there.

I think what they have is a guarded friendship/mentor/student of sorts relationship. I think anything else besides that is absurd as Duncan is as you say--a strictly heterosexual man. Even Donna Lettow doesn't get it when it comes to seeing that kind of homosexual relationship between the two of them if I recall correctly from her post at Rysher before she left.

I think that there is a possibility that ROG is bisexual when he wants to be but he leans more towards heterosexuality than homosexuality on a day to day basis. This is again, JMHO and just the tip of the iceberg on the subject I'm sure.

I want to think on this some more before I say anything more....

I agree with you...

by Hmpf

I am pretty sure Methos is not exclusively heterosexual; as JoAnn stated rightly, homosexuality was widely accepted, sometimes even the standard, in many cultures of the past - though until recently historians tended to overlook this... I do believe, however, that he 'leans more towards heterosexuality', as you put it. Still, I think his relationship with Kronos definitely has a sexual component, and maybe with Byron, too.
While I can easily accept this in general - and while I don't have any moral problem at all with homosexuality - I still have some problem with slash stories. I am not quite sure why this is so. maybe it's because in most of these stories Methos is sleeping with Duncan, who is not only in my eyes a strictly heterosexual man, but also a man I do not in the slightest find attractive...
I read, to test myself, 'Rapture' by wombat, a story with a Mulder/Methos pairing, and had, to my great surprise, a lot less of a problem imagining a relationship between these two men. I do, however, have a problem with explicit sex scenes. I am *not* a prudish person, really I'm not, but I feel like, I don't know, intruding upon the private life of the ROG or whoever else involved. Part of the 'problem' may also be that these kind of stories do not invoke much in the way of the feelings they're supposed to invoke with me. I don't know whether that means that I'm strange...
Unfortunately, I don't have much time now, so that's all from me for now.
See you later,
Hmpf

MHO - Long

by Cherna

Just finished a discussion on slash fic on ath (alt.tv.highlander, the Usenet Newsgroup) not too long ago.

You made some excellent points Cel, very much along the lines of the way I think about the topic.

I agree that many of those who write slash fiction see things in the different pairings that we just don't see. After all, we each see the same program, however it's what we get out of it or how we filter it, that influences what we see. So where they see a definite 'slash' moment when DM paints Methos' nose, I just see him painting his friend's nose (perhaps to tick him off, to tweak him... who knows. He thought it would be funny so he did it.)

I see the same kind of relationship as you do... a guarded friendship/mentor/student-type. If someone else sees more, it doesn't mean it's there... it just means it's their opinion. I'm not gonna tell em it's wrong... it's _their_ opinion; their feelings, that's all.

I think in 5K worth of living, Methos could have tried a lot of things. He comes from a differnet time and different culture than the rest of them. (As we all do *bg*)

I don't mind reading any fan fiction as long as it's good. How do I define good? Well, if it keeps my attention and doesn't break the 'reading' spell. If the dialogue doesn't sound like the character, if the spelling/grammar, punctuation is off, then it distracts me and I lose interest.

One of my personal pet peeves is reading a story where Duncan refers to someone using the term of endearment, "Love or Luv." He _could_ have used that in the show, but I don't remember it. It just doesn't sound like him. Too many of those from _any_ HL fan fiction and my warning radar goes off.

Also, when sex is being written out, sometimes you get the feeling that certain wives tales are being passed on by the authors. There are resources on the web that will help an author accurately write these types of scenes.

I read HL slash. To me, if the story transcends the sex, it's a good story. I always use Maygra as an example. The story and relationship is primary, the sex secondary and it's a beautiful thing!

(regarding Hmpf's comments) *waving hello*

I don't see any sexual componant in Methos' relationships with Kronos or Byron. I do feel that he is a sensualist and a hedonist (if it feels good, do it *eg). I feel that Methos was attracted to Kronos because of the power he wielded and the freedom it would provide. I always enjoy seeing him struggle as Kronos describes what they had when they rode together as the 4 Horseman. It would be so easy for him to slip into the mantle of what once was... but as he tells his 'brother', he's outgrown his angry adolesence.

Same with Byron. That time frame was a heady experience. I don't see Methos as making the kinds of judgements that Duncan does. That's why I think we're shown a different type of flashback with Methos). I think Methos enjoyed Byron's behavior, and participated in it enough to make his friend happy, but not enough so that he'd fall back into the type of behavior he exhibited with the Horseman.

The funny thing...(long)

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater, MW #4

is the nose painting scene was actually an "ad-lib" on AP's part so does it mean that those people who saw it as a homosexual influence think AP is gay?

As for Methos being a hedonist, you hit the nail on the head! I'm definately not a vocabulary buff, so I'm glad you gave me the word! Anyway, in my opinion, I think there may have been a "close" relationship between Methos and Byron because of the way he tried to protect him so forcefully. But the friend/mentor/student thing is more like DM and Methos. With Byron, it was all pleasure and Methos was very willing to join in the fun.

I'm one of Maygra's fans. I am eagerly waiting for her to finish Convergence and The Origins Cycle. Stories that delve into the love between two people no matter the sex, interests me. And as you said, a bad story, any bad story, really turns me off. Especially a really bad PWP story! However, the Methos In The Morning series were just hilarious!

On a personal note, though, I'm fearful now of posting my own fan-fic knowing you're out there reading it! ;-) In my first three stories, I have Methos paired up with a woman and I've cut out the explicit sex scenes. I've got DM acting out of character, and my grammer sucks like a turbine! And don't even get me started on the lame plot lines and action sequences! My plan was to write about the deep relationship between Methos and this woman but I think I may have fallen way short of my objective. (Hey, I never said I was on the same level as Maygra!) However, my third story, just entitled SMUT, was written for Morgana. It's just sex, sex and more sex. It was actually hard to write it for two reasons, I felt uncomfortable putting down on screen something so intimate and I found it difficult describing it. I felt more like a sports announcer than a writer! So, if you would be so kind as to direct me to those resources you spoke about...

The painting of the nose

by Eirawen

No, those who see a slashy relationship between DM and M do not think that AP is gay, anymore than if he actually played DM as gay. If a person sees the actions of the charater as a RL barometer, then that person needs to get a quick lesson in separating reality from fiction.

IMO, those who rest their slashy laurels on the nose painting scene are not really digging deep enough. I think that the slashy nature of their relationship lies in the unspoken.

A theory of mine...

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater, MW #4

in the unspoken actions between the two characters. I can honestly believe there might be an unconscious attraction to Methos on DM's part.

I'm really giving PW massive props on his acting abilities when it comes to Methos here. The way Methos is portrayed, he reminds me of a woman. Not like a "queen" but his feminine side really shows and what I've noticed is that MacLeod seems to treat and protect Methos as one of his female friends. However, I still can't see a physical attraction between them. Oh well, maybe I'll never get it.

But the question I posed with Cherna's statement was just a question on that particular scene. I've never believed AP was homosexual.

Call me when you get a chance....M Oh, yeah, you wanna' get together for food at my place tomorrow?

Re: Methos, Kronos, Byron

by Hmpf, thinking again

(waving hello to Cherna!)
I think when I said there was a sexual component in Methos' relationship with Kronos and Byron, I did not necessarily mean an active sexual relationship. I just mean a kind of ambiguous attraction that *could* become such a relationship and therefore makes Methos/Kronos or Methos/Byron slash a lot more believable to me than Methos/Duncan slash. I don't think there necessarily *was* such a reltionship; I just feel like there is a possibility, especially with Kronos.

The thing that I really wonder about...

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater, MW #4

is those PWP stories. As I stated before, I have nothing against homosexuality, IMHO, I think we all have that shade of gray in us whether we acknowledge it or not. But the stories where they just jump into bed, or where ever they jump into, seems just odd for women to write in GRAPHIC DETAIL.

I look at it this way

by Eirawen

A PWP is typically no more graphic than a scene nestled into a longer, more developed piece, but it appears that way because that's all the story you get.

Personally, and you'd have to actually ask people who write slash for an accurate opinion, I think that it's easier for some women to write a graphic scene between two men because there is no one for the author to identify with. I know that I wouldn't want to read a graphic account of a heterosexual couple having sex because I would get too caught up in how it would feel for the woman. And that's not always a comfortable feeling.

The thing about some slash is it's meant to be a piece of erotica. That means sex. You can write euphemisms but, IMO, your reader is less likely to be aroused when you skirt the issue.

Well, there's something to be said...

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater ,MW #4

about leaving it to the reader's imagination. Bringing it to the edge and then fading to black.

I've written both, implied sex and graphic sex. As the writer, I feel better implying it. As the reader, I guess it would have to depend on the story and how well it is written.

I've written both too and personally

by Celedon

the things that leave open to the imagination are the things that people find the most erotic. Why? Because it allows their imaginations to "fill in the blank" as to how a touch or the penatration feels like to the characters while allowing the readers to put themselves where they want to inside the story or characters provided by the authors.

It's rare that I write an entire sexually graphic scene unless it serves a purpose in the story--I've written graphic rape scenes in all the horror of how it is for the victim as well as for the assilant that convey both the power yet erotism that comes within the context of rape per se.

But this does not mean I would ever condone or would ever wish such a horror upon anyone. Rape is brutal an I think it should be portrayed as such without any sugar coating like you see it done on occasion for fear of offending someone/thing.

I think it serves a purpose to both reader/writer to as you call it "fade to black" when the sexual activities start because you can write all the way through the foreplay and necking but sex itself is such a initmate affair that either the reader or writer begin to Mary Sue it and it turns out to be uncomfortable for both people on both ends. But as you say, how it is portrayed can be pertinent to the storyline.

(and no, I never Mary Sue my female characters no matter what--they are about as far away from the real me as one can imagine most of the time.)

Ok Jo Ann--here's an invitation for you: Sunday night there is to be a "smut" class at my board (which is a private board). Come and join in the activites--we or I post certain things or set up a scene and then let you take free rein of what you do with it from there. We get some great erotica out of it form the DOB members and I'd love to see what you can do.

Morgana's going to laugh at me!

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater, MW #4

She's been trying to get me to join the DOBC ever since I wrote her that SMUT story!

I re-read my stories and of course I'm a harsh critic. My first two stories had implied sex, my third story had absolutely no sex! But there were three children born, hmm, how'd that happen! And of course the last one is SMUT. Some kind of plot, a slash scene, group sex, and a lot of one on one.

I think you hit the nail on the head

by Eirawen

IMO, it depends on the story and the function of the scene. If a person is supposed to go on the physical roller coaster with the characters, a simple fade to black will not accomplish the goal.

Does that mean that every story has include a graphical depiction of a sexual liason in order to titilate the reader. No. A few of the best pieces I've read have the characters throwing looks across a room with little or no physical closeness, and definitely no sex. In those stories, the act of having sex was not integral to the telling of the story, so a sex scene would be superfluous.

Usually, subtlty does have a stronger impact than a blunt account of events. But that doesn't mean that in the hands of a capable writer an explicit account is overkill. I do believe that some stories mandate the telling of events to keep the plot flowing.

It all has to come down to, what is the point of the story and what are you trying to elicit from the reader.

This speaks nothing of a reader's distaste for explicit plots or RL experiences that might influnce how he/she reads the story. If you simply don't like to read about people engaging in a certain activity, then you are unlikely to ever see the point or why something is necessary. That doesn't mean that you are defective as a reader. We all have subjects that we don't wish to force upon ourselves.

I realize that this got long and this has nothing to do with you personally, Jo Ann. I think that I had some unresolved feelings from the discussion Donna started on Rysher. Just looking for a place to unload. :)

I tend to agree with the above...but thought of another reason...(long)

by

And I might be completely off the mark, but then, it wouldn't be the first time! Most erotica...I think, has a touch of wish-fulfillment at it's base. And I think there are just bunches of women who'd like seeing two seriously hot guys...uh *connecting* (hey, men admit they dig the chick thing, why can't we admit it could be a turn-on for us in the reverse case?)

Or, maybe they (shades of all that Mary-Sue stuff I've been reading, now...since this is my one great crime against fan-fic...I feel uniquely qualified to hit on it) put themselves in one of the uh (bad word here) positions. But if they are seeing things through the eyes of A *male*, re-curring character..it couldn't possibly be acting out a MS fantasy?

Or could it?

I've seen a lot of fic both PWP and plot w/slash...and it gets harder and harder to find the character..because the character takes on other *quirks*. Methos becomes a baseball fan (say what?) or Duncan has a junk-food fetish that just seems out of place in these stories...it's as if the slash idea came first, and then they picked a show out of a hat. Where are these quirks coming from?

My guess...the writer. Or rather, someone the writer knows, and is "modelling" the character after.

But this is all JMHO.(And I confess to reading it all, even the really messed-up stuff!)

Why does anyone write anything!

by Isolde: I'll take a stab at this, as well!!!

I'm thinking that people write for their own enjoyment and to create something that they are proud of. I think that the tendency for most slash (but not all) to be written by woman has to do with fantasy and indulgences in something that is not, to them, threatening.

To respond to your comment on the clarity of homosexuality, hmm, I'm not sure that anyone can judge the sexual intricacy and preferences of a TV series character. There simply is not enough information to base an accurate assessment on them. We judge by our own standards !!!

I'm not saying that I don't agree with what you said about Methos and Macleod, I do agree!! But when a writer decides to create a story, of fan-fiction (key word fiction) there should not be any rules that can't be broken. In the world of literature (Highlander) we are dealing with-in the whole of a fantasy universe.

I find nothing wrong with slash..if it, as others here have said, is well written. I have read some very well written slash, and some bad slash. But this is like any type of writing, face it, there is good and bad in everything. There must be some kind of plot and it must be realistic to the point that it holds the reader's attention.

Being a "manly man" of the very strict Catholic religion, as you noted does not make Macleod more of anything, or less. He is an immortal who has lived for hundreds of years, I think that, time-lived, must play some significant factor in living. By this I mean that in those years, since his pre-immortal life, he must have changed or at least reconsidered the ways of his people. I can realistically see him pondering almost any situation, that's just the way I see it.

The comments about Methos and Kronos are harder to address, they are more complicated...
Here we have two characters that are, for whatever the reasons, at odds with each other. This situation is filled with tension, sensuality, as well as the obvious power struggle. A relationship with these foundations, set into the HS, allows for so many imaginative stories and fantasies.
Personally, I feel that the series episodes CAH&Rev 6.8 left the door open for these possibilities to have existed. We as mortals can not understand, comprehend,or live, the lives that these two may have lived. How can we know what it must be like to know a person for thousands of years, through different times, cultures and moralities?
The possibility that their (Methos & Kronos) relationship to be as, more than just combatants, is obviously there. They at one time may have been more than what they where in those episodes. I believe, the subtle nuances of the scene could if you where looking for it, imply that they had some sort of private relationship.

I guess that is enough of that, I'm not wanting to ramble any more.
I do in general agree with what the others have said here. I think that a story is a story and if it is well written and holds my interest, no matter what it is about, than it is worth putting aside reality for.
Thanks peace

The thing about DM...

by Jo Ann MacBBGL, Cheesy Poofs Eater, MW #4

is that, in all the flashbacks and the "present day" scenes, he's been pretty much the same person! It's not just religion but it's a big part of it. (I know, I've been bombarded with Catholisism all my life) DM is staunchly proud and for what ever reason, he clings to the teachings from his mortal life. I don't know if I'm relaying my thoughts out very well, but words always escape my feeble mind.

He holds the moralities he was taught when he was child, very close to him. I wouldn't say that it's to the point where he would look down upon homosexuals, but as I've seen, he's still Duncan MacLeod of the clan MacLeod raised to be the chief. I was about to say chef!

Yes I agree!!!

by

I do agree with what you said about DM.
I am thinking that the stories written (slash) about him are, what I said early, ..safe fantasies.
I am not fond of DM slash. Perhaps because of the reasons you have described, or perhaps he just isn''t one of my interest, I'm not sure. But I do know, I find it hard to stomach them.
But, I do like some slash..its just another story waiting to be read. I think that if a person has a good thought and puts it down well, then it deserves a look.
And also, I think that you articulated your thoughts very nicely. LOL
Thanks peace

Fanfic recommendation...

by Hmpf, still around

This is really kind of a reply to a post further down, but I'm putting it up here so it will not be overlooked so easily, because the story I want to recommend is really great. It's likely the best Methos and Cassandra story I've read so far (Jeanne Rose's 'Black Sand' is a very close second, though). I don't know how to link to it, so I will just put the URL here...
OK, I want to recommend Tanja kinkel's 'Covenants Trilogy' to everyone, because it is a wonderfully complex story that has Methos and Cassandra develop a very strange and fascinating relationship. These stories are, for a change, *not* about guilt and forgiveness... If you want to read them, go to
http://members.tripod.com/ggalasso/Default.htm
This is the voices anthology. Go to 'Story List' and scroll down... the stories titles are
'Incubus'and 'Once Out Of Nature'. There's a third story, too, that does not deal with Methos and Cassandra but with Amy...
Enjoy! These are really good!
