http://www.Rimfireshooting.com is a family friendly forum with skilled and knowledgable shooters. These folks is who I would call "good people" They care about helping others with the same interest in our sport.
I also appreciate the fact that this forum is for shooters helping shooters and not sponcered by any company or vendor. This increases honest reports and not one sided biased reviews. This allows information to other helpful websites to increase our knowledge and further our sport.
I recently found a Winchester Model 1890, 22 short. It is a take down gun. What is the collecters value of this? Is there anyway I can tell the age of the gun by the serial number(242110)? The gun was found with rust all over and in the barrel. I was wondering how much it would cost to have the barrel reblued? Is there a way I can get the rust out of the barrel?

Whats the difference between the 900A and 900B Gold Metal Match ammo?? Have some 900, no A or B, which shoots very consistant, but want more. What do I get if I can't find any more 900?? TIA
Great! We now have a community forum on our new forum. We can all be back together again. Go check it out! I was really feeling alienated on the new forum. Did not feel like home! Now we can be back together like a big family again. Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks Indy and Giz for the Community Forum.
Never heard of this gun. Saw it in a post and it looked good. Stupid Q: who makes it? Also is it any good. The price on the web page said $300 wholesale so makes me question its quailty? Thanks for any info..............
Gunz, the NS522 is a Chinese made rifle, it has a hammer forged barrel and most are quite accurate. The picture on the web site is very flattering to say the least. The wood which is supposed to be American walnut, does not look like any walnut I have seen and the bluing is poor quality. They do however shoot very well. It is not a $300 dollar rifle, but it is a decent $200 dollar rifle. With some additional work and money they can be made into a really nice peice.
the gun if i am not mistaken is made by norinco, imported by keng's in atlanta. the qaulity is very good, the stock is one nice piece of wood, the fit and finish is above average for some of the chinese guns. as far shooting, it is one of the finer rimfire bolt rifles i have shot. my o bought used and the trigger was already tuned to 10 oz, and it was bedded, but at 25 yards it is not hard to shoot hole for hole. the rifle will shoot much better than i shoot it, and if my groups are a little wider it is only because of me. i have shot 1/4 inch groups so far with using fed 711 ammo at 50 yds., and dyna's shoot almost as well. believeme if get it you will love it!!
where can I pick one up. i go to a least one gun show a month and have never seen one. would like to try one now, i shoot a lot on the weekends and always looking for 22s to go along with the 10/22 i have. really just got interested in 22s and they are great...thanks for the info this is a great service for guys like me.
Zanders sporting goods has them and they can be bought by a DEALER for 199, now I don't know what he will charge you. I have owned three and so far nothing I have ever shot shoots with them. (Nothing under 500 bucks anyway) Most likely going to own another if my current target gun doesn't work out. thanks Kirby
But, you know me - gotta be a nayer. I'm having a li'l hard time making the transition from this to that new layout. I'm HOPING not, but got a feelin' it's gonna break us up becuz it's so 'spread out' - I didn't find no place in it that gives me that 'family room' feel this forum has, where you can scan down thru the one page & catch a pretty good idea of everything that's goin' on.
But it looks really nice! (Not that there's anything wrong with here.) grin
~~*444
What we need is a "family Room" The ability to find the info you want is great, but, we don't want to lose that "closeness" even tho some of us rubbed the others the wrong way, that's what a family is like.
I agree with both of you, sometimes change is hard at first.
by Hilltop
I just came from their, it felt very unfamiliar. I agree that it is a great, well designed site, but it is "spread out". I just hope I can find all of my "friends" when I need them the most.
Good luck to all.
Happy turkey day.
Hilltop.
Com'on guys. It's just like moving into a new house. At first it all feels real cold and not at all like home but after a few days you start feeling comfortable. As for needing a "family room" I tend to agree, but just like in a new house we'll decide where we all congregate. It will be fine.
My question is whether or not there will be a drop dead date on this board, a date after which we can no longer post here. Also will the current threads be moved over to the new board or will we have to recreate?
It will take some time before we all unpack and get things nice and cosey , the way we like it.
Yes, there will be a "drop dead" date ..It should be for "read text" only. This board will always be up as long as Network 54 leaves it be.
The current Threads cannot be moved over. Indy and I have been trying with no luck to save this forums information. My plans is once things start working smoothly, I will go through all post and save information for plans of furthering our FAQ.
They are going to make a family room where we can be together. As to member! Only those that made a donation are official members. If you donated, contacted Indy and get your password.
Anyone can use the forum without a password. You do want to register your name so no one else can use it. That way no one can make a post and pretend it was you. It is a good thing for our own security. Right now I feel more comfortable in our old home. But, let's give it a chance, I'm sure it will be great when we get used to it. Giz and Indy did a ton of work to make this thing. The least we can do is give it a chance. See ya on the new forum. Take care
Just not used to change I, will dig in deep and do the best I can and, I know it was a lot of work . Sorry for my first Thought, but do like the way we all can talk, this is the best fourm I know thank you Arthur
and most likley it will step on your foot or bite you on the butt before you get it there! I'm betting Giz and Indy will get this "horse" trained before too long.
Heck I can remember when I didn't like girls....somethings just take a little time to get used to!
Don't go away, I like the way you can strip a subject down to less than 20 words!
into shooting rimfire. A buddy had one with a nice Redfield scope. It has a "big gun" look and feel and with a good scope it was a pleasure to shoot. Now I had several 22's in the safe, most with iron sights, and a couple with chessey small tube rimfire scopes. I also had several decent scopes...mounted one a 22...next thing I know, I'm shooting 2000 rounds a month!
I have never put a 77/22 on paper. However, on steel targets it will go shot for shot with most guns. I've shot squirrels and coons with that 77/22 at the deer lease. It works in real life....as far as some of our insane accuracy requirments go (dots at 25 yards) I can't say.
Bought a 77/22 in 81 put a 3/9 on her shot t-22 ammo think Winchester, put 10 shots in the same hole at 50yds yes out of the box, just got lucky better lucky then good Arthur
I have a stainless 77/22 and also a 77/22 VBZ (heavy Barrel). For the money there are other better guns out there . The CZ line comes to mind, if i were to sell off any of my 22's the rugers would be the first to go. Their accuracy is acceptable but i think CZ's are better guns for a little less money.
I picked up a new 77/22 about 6 mo. ago and am real pleased with its performance. With a cheap 3x9 Bushnell scope it will consistently do .5" groups @ 50 yds. with good ammo. I have yet to get my 10/22's to do as well. And this is out of the box. No accuracy mods at all. I did clean the trigger pull up a little bit.
Ahh Grasshopper! You have found the true path to 22 happiness....
by
shoot slightly bigger targets! At 1 1/2" that's a nice real world sized target. I think we too often forget why we got into (or came back to) rimfires...because they are fun and cheap to shoot! We drive ourselves to distraction by trying to shoot tiny groups or hit 20 dots...and when it doesn't happen, we sell out and start over, or re-work everything, or buy a bigger scope...we chase it real hard. In so doing, we loose sight of the prize. The real prize is FUN and as a bonus we sharpen our marksmanship skills. I'll take a brick of cheap ammo, spinner rack and a nice day at the range any day over straining, sweating, and cussing trying to make a .25" hole with 5 shots into a piece of paper!
I was wondering what is a good match barrel preferably under 150 dollars. Are the Butler Creek barrels a good deal? Are they accurate?
Was wanting the feather weight barrel. Are they accurate?
Can anybody tell me about the accuracy / reliability of.....
by Gunslinger
Rugers 10-22 magnum, semi auto. Been looking at one of these, kind of holding off 'till i can find out how accurate they are. Any opinions / advice appreciated
Mis... I can't see the keys! I'm laughing too hard!!! Guns ctxt
by
O.K.... They're not so blurry now!
Welcome to Giz's! Us Magnum owners are a minority here. And I try to convert as many prospective 10/22 owners as possible.
To be short and sweet... take what the .22 LR can do and add 50 to 75 yards. What the LR guys can do at 50 yds. I can do (yes, guys I can!) at 100 yds.
My 10/22 RBM is now a Ruger/Volquartsen/Hogue rifle. And I love it!!!
The ammo is more expensive, but, who cares? We'all have alot of fun and that's what this sport is all about
And God said "Let there be wheels" and the Harley was born. God rode it and said "It is the best". Then God said "Let there be fun" and the Ruger 10/22 Magnum was born, and he saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let there be toys for this one" and gave the job to Volquartsen. Yeah, if God rides, it would be a Harley, if he shoots it would be a 10/22 Magnum. Gentlemen, life is good. The Magnum makes it better. I will NEVER be without mine again.
One of the things I am thankful for this Thanksgiving is Bill Ruger and his wonderful 10/22 Magnum. Happy Thanksgiving, one and all.
always heard from the old guys at the range the 22 mag was not acurate but you have sparked my interst in yet another gun. what is available for it so far????????
I also tried a lot of ammo for the Magnum. Mine REALLY likes Winchester Super-X 40gr hp. So, I bought a brick of 'em. 1/2" groups at 50 yards. Factory barrel but Volq worked their magic with the trigger group. Accurate? Yep, every bit as much as my tricked out 10/22lr.
It may seem too good to be true, but you can build your own post-ban & otherwise legal guns as long as they are leagal to own in your area, are for your own personal use & not intended for sale or transfer of any kind to any other person. You do not need to pay taxes on these - you are not a commercial manufacturer - we checked. Many of us on the AR15.com forum called "build it yourself" have made our own AR-15s. If you doubt the legality of such a project, I invite you to check back over the last 60 days worth of posts on AR15.com - the laws & regulations are all there. Take a look also at the American Rifleman a few months back on conversion cylinders to turn your balck powder six-gun into a cartridge revolver -- same idea. The link in the message below shows the machine work on an 80% AR receiver in progress done on top-notch machine equipment, but it is not too hard to do with regular tools (does take a long time using hand tools though). Anyway, as mentioned below, William should be getting in some 80% complete 10/22 castings in the future - I don't have any more info than you, but if they are like his AR-15 castings, they should be 364 cast aluminum hardened to T-6. As for what has to be done to complete them, I don't have an answer, but I'd bet that at least the trigger group holes, barrel hole, and the barrel mounting screw holes will need to be machined. I trust my AR lower & it handles 5.56 ammo - I would not hesitate to build & fire a 10/22 that I built myself. But you be the judge. Just passing along some interesting information.

Greetings from Idaho! - It's COLD - And I'm sick with the flu.... what a welcome...
by KNB
The trip was uneventful. Drove up here in an over-load truck running on Firestone tires. It will be awhile before my computer is up and running. Feeling pretty rotten from the flu. Have a great Thanksgiving all!
Glad to see ya made it in OK....din't see you had left until you'd left so din't get to wish ya a safe journey. Anyway, welcome 'home' and hope all's going fine, other'n the flu-bug. Have a great Turkday, get the toob hooked up so's ya can watch football with the stretched belt & all! LOL
~~*444
Slowly drink 1/5 of Wild Turkey Bourbon. OK, OK, this won't really cure the flu...but for a while you won't give a damn and at least you'll have a good excuse for the headache you already have! Stay warm!
KNB,get your butt well soon,I need an email address for you
by
Hey pal, sorry you took ill.Look at it this way,you probably will be flu free after this for the next year. Glad to hear your trip was a safe one.Get yourself well soon and drop me a line when you get hooked up with your puter.Gotta tough out that Idaho winter now but spring there should be awesome.
Hello!!!
I just must say that the new forum is great.. Better than the old, althought i did not think that it could be more than a forum.. I was wrong. And i´m happy about it!!
Volquartsen Custom,Smart move to be on Giz's new forum
by
I applaud you and will send business your way.Looking forward to the new Rem. 597 products also.Your name is synonymous with "Quality" and brings respect to our hobby and passion.Thanks.
Pinball: Thanks for the kind remarks. We figured Giz's board was a great place to have a banner ad. Giz was a good guy to work with as well. Hopefully the 597 parts should be done within a couple of weeks or so. We have the barrels nearly completed and are now working on the trigger components.
Just letting you know that the old style VC 2000 arrived in today's mail. Excellant condition, no problems. Thanx. Keep up the excellant quality of your products.
This forum has been a real homebase for me. I travel a lot and no matter how far away from home I get, I could always check in here "visit" with the folks. I will miss this old house.
Thanks You for your kind words and your contribution. I do agree, it is a bit sad... I am sure with time it will warm up, once we unpack, and get things organized the way we want it.
Have an extra synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel available.
by Bob
These are from my all weather model 10/22. The stock is a black, light synthetic model made by ruger, and the barrel is stainless steel with the open sights. They are both in close to perfect shape, and the best offer takes one or both. BTW, the stock does have the barrel band (silver.)
First of all Happy Thanksgiving to all,
My story is I ordered at Midway about two weeks ago and I used a Money Order on purchasing a scope for my 10/22. But after for a while got worried and emailed them(Midway) after waiting again they finally emailed me and said that they didnt recieve any money order i've sent and should check where I purchased it, I know I filled up all the info. on the M.O. and put the right address, I've ordered before on them and used the same M.O. but never happened like this?? Anybody have any experience like this ? any advice??
Thanks,
worried Josh
Given that 'some' mail didn't make it to IndyShooter, you have reason to worry the M O never made it to em. I wish you the best of luck, I have no idea how to get money back from a money order after it's lost.
Midway is a good company to deal with. However, if your money order does not show up you can indeed get a refund for a U. S. Postal money order if it has not been cashed. Take your receipt for the money order to the Post Office (does not have to be where you purchased that money order) and have a trace done. You will need to fill out a form and pay a fee (around $3.00) Submit the form and they will check to see if it has been cashed. If the money order has not been cashed within a sixty day period (I think it's sixty days), the Post Office will send you a refund.
I was wondering if any of the nice Anschutz stocks fit Ruger 10/22's, because I'd like to get one like their 2213 metal stock. I think it would be a wonderful addition to my rifle collection. Stainless Bull Barrel 10/22 with 2213 Metal Stock... (I doubt they fit, but I wasn't sure)
I wasn't sure because I keep seeing postings regarding Anschutz products, and I was curious.
why spend that much money on an excellent stock when you are gonna put a fairly cheap (good but still cheap) action in it? it might look cool but you could just get a complete anschutz rifle and have looks + functionality
Why did I buy a $100 pawn shop 10/22 then add a Shilen barrel, Gatewood stock, an 8-40X56 Tasco scope & as of yet I've never fired a round from it. The rifle still has to go to Randy at CPC so he can do his thing to it. Why? Who the heck knows why it makes no sence at all but when I take my little 10/22 to the range nobody else will have one like it. Maybe it's kinda like my Harley. Opps that's a different story, us old folks tend to ramble on & on & so forth.
The #1 weapon that has killed the most people.....
by Andrew Leung
My in-law shared an interesting bit of information with me yesterday. Since he is in law enforcement, they get access to some bizzarre statistics of murder/death by firearms. Apparently after tabulating all the weapons in make and model, the Ruger 10/22, either in a sawed off or modified stock configuration was the #1 "assult weapon" to kill the most people.
Ar-15s, and the like came in dead last.
I would like to find that information myself.
So, just watch out! Them Libbers are stupid enough to do something about it.
why would you doubt those statistics? they make sense to me...
by michael
the reason the ar-15 and the like are way at the bottom of the list, is because most people dont have access to them, they are pretty high dollar guns for a criminal to get a hold of, and there arent any web sites which show how to convert an ar-15 into a full automatic, as far as i know. the 10/22 on the other hand is a very cheap, yet accurate and readily available gun, its quiet compared to a bigger gun and there are magazines as large as 100 rounds for it, also readily available.
i personally dont know of a source because i dont own a 10/22
by michael
but i have seen tons of people talking about them on this forum, anyways you can nit pick if you want but for the most part what i said about the 10/22 is accurate.
I've been here for quite some time and I can't remember any threads on 100-round mags. Show me one!
The vast majority of the people who post here DO have 10/22's, and know enough about them and the accessories available to know 100-round mags are extremely rare if even existant. So, your claim of seeing 'tons of people talking about them here' is in itself pure bull$h!t.
AND, to refer to the calling to light of such gross distortions of facts as 'nit picking' is a pitiful defense!
^^^^^^
The 9mm is by far & away the greatest source of urban firearms casualties (in both wounds AND fatalities).
They are as real as anything, It was a long time ago and I was just surfing the web, I came across a company that made class 3 stuff for the 10/22. One of the things they made was a 100 rnd mag. It was for export only. So we can't get them, and will probly never see one. But yes they do exsist.
Hilltop
when you can 'better' spend your money on drugs and so forth. The .22 is just as effective a killer as a .44 mag or a rifle bullet when put in the right place. Besides, .22s are cheaper and ubiquitous, makes 'sense' in that sense. Desperate people using desperate means, when will folks ever learn? [:>)
but then again I don't have access to "bizzarre statistics of murder/death by firearms". It just sounds too cooked up to me....never heard it before and doubt if it could be proven true...maybe it was put out by "Them Libbers". At any rate, there are far more 10/22's in hands of good people than bad people. Enforce existing criminal laws and quit wasteing time compling worthless facts and spent it catching the bad guys...my advice to law enforcement.
is that Ar15 type/style weapons get such a bad wrap...that stupid North Hollywood crap with the AK47s apparently was smuggled in from Mexico...and rightful citizens are banned to own them in CA.
A state Congressman Mike Honda (D) used a footage of that shooting to say that concealed permits is what he is against (against his opponent) and that he vowed to make the streets safer that way...He is ended up getting elected.
Totally disagree, no murders in this state in recently with 10/22s
by
The worlds record holder in numbers of murders is still to this day is Stalin of Russia... So number one murder weapon would probley be Mosin Nagent or their T Russian pistol... Their has been no murders in my state for 4 or years using a 10/22, last I recall was a anti-abortion nut shooting a clinics receptionist... 9 mm, .380's and .25 cal pistols murder more than any other weapons around here... So I agree with Mismost... Randy at CPC
These calibers are cheaper to manufacture handguns in and therefore there is a black market for them where they are easily obtained. The quality vs affordability of a stamped handgun that can barely shoot a 2 foot group is definetly not a sporting class arm.
My father was in law enforcement for over25 years, and when tagging along with him to the sheriffs dept. when I was younger there was at times confiscated "items"that he and the sheriff would look over and lo an behold a many great deal of them were sawed off 22's marlins and ruger auto loaders.I always asked why they ruined the nice guns my father said they were cheap and easy to get(steal)the majority were marlins but also some bolt actions.
I do think it is possible that 22's are on the list but not NUMBER 1.And very d*mn possible that those liberals can make this list up also!!
I have been in law enforcement for over 28 years, in a city of about 175k, and a metro area of about a million people, and I have investigated hundreds of murders, and thousands of shootings where individuals were wounded but not killed. I can not remember a single homicide involving a 10/22. There may have been one and I don’t remember, but if the statistical data quoted were reliable, then I would certainly be aware of it because I would have seen it played out over and over again. This is absolutely not true about the shootings involving 10/22.
In the 1970’s revolvers seemed to be the weapon of choice especially cheap H&R revolvers. In the 1980’s cheap .25 cal semi-auto and 9mm were popular. In the 1990’s, expensive semi-autos 9mm pistols. Now were are seeing lots of 9mm 40cal and .45 cal.
I once read that there were more shootings with .22 caliber than any other. It made sense to me because there are probably more .22's out there than any other. It's cheap and easy to get ammo, almost any general store has a couple boxes of .22's lying around. Also with cheap pistols like jennings and davis being prolific with gang bangers, it also made sense to me. I think this guy may have read what i read but instead of .22 he interpreted it as 10/22. I'm sure he also interpreted shootings as killings, hence there is his statistic. Oh how facts can be misconstrued.
I'm in a financial pinch, so I sadly must sell my VG-1. It has been pampered and is in perfect condition. The TG2000 that is installed is the new design with internal plunger. The rifle alone sells for $1450. You can see the details on this totally bad-assed rifle on Volquartsen's website.
I have mounted on it a Leupold Vari-XIII 4.5-14x40 (fine duplex) with target knobs. SWFA sells this scope for $450. The total package is worth $1900. I'm asking $1500. If interested, please email me a bmcdaniels@hotmail.com. Thanks.
Look what America has come to.Only in 3rd world countries????Gore has raped and stripped democracy and the constitution. Iam sickened. Just sickened.I pray for this Country.GOD BLESS"FREE" AMERICA!
Makes me sick. You can bet that Gores's goons will manufacture just enough votes to win now that the Democrat Fla. Supreme Court has legalized the obviously partisan handcounting of ballots. What a coincendence that just enough ballots will be contested, and then reviewed by Democrat controlled canvassing board! Gee, wonder which way they will go?
My Dad gave me a Remington Model 34 .22 bolt-action when I was 12 (7 years ago). He was given this gun used by his father when he was 16. Is there any way to determine what year this gun was made? I figure its from the 1950s or early 60s, but I'd like to know for sure. It still works fine, but I was getting tired of having to work the bolt after every shot (bought a 10/22 last week).
Looked around and searched everywhere I could think of but wasn't able to find anything about the optimum twist or a barrel maker for the Aquilla SSS ammo.
if you have the ability to cut and chamber the barrel yourself,I have the machinery to do so at work(I use to be a machinist)and am able to get blanks and chambering reams from Brownells.
BTW I have an old walther with a 1-10 twist, too fast for target ammo but those 60grn Aguilla are very accurate!!!
Jack, we have tested everything from a 8 twist up to a 16 twist barrel for the Aguila 60gr ammo. We ended up getting our best results with the 9 twist. We will hopefully have an aftermarket barrel ready soon for this ammo.
Matches AR-15 twists/weights - 1/9 about right for 60 grn .223
by repeater
I would have thought the lower velocity would make a bigger difference w/ the SSS - guesse not!
AR barrels come in rates from 1/7 (current US GI on the current issue weapon, the M-4 carbine) to 1/14 (the original M-16).
The 1/14 will only stabilize bullets of 55 grns or less - and even then, the bullets sometimes failed to stabilize at distance at very cold (arctic warfare) temps. They also produced horrible wounds since they were understablized & would tumble on impact.
The 1/7 wears out quickly, but it will stabilize the new 62 grain GI ammo. For 60 grain bullets atop .223 ammo, the 1/9 would work well. For my DCM target rifle, I have the popular 1/8 that works with 62 grn but also with the heavier 75 grn Very Low Drag bullets used at the 600 yd stage.
Yesterday I found out that the University I attend has a Second Amendment Armament group, so as I'm interested, I attended their meeting, and they had a "Show & Tell". Almost everyone brought in... Pre-ban ruger 10/22's! I was considered a "Newbie" by all of them, but when I started suggesting other modifications for their rifles, they were shocked with how much I knew about them! Just completely knocked out! I got to play with Mitchell Drum Magz, Some kewl stocks, etc.
One of my favorites was a wood stock with a sliding steel rod buttstock, with a pistol-grip forearm, BC 25rd mags, and a 14" barrel. This kid apparently had his since 1985.
When everyone asked where I learned of my astonishing wealth of knowledge, I told them about this forum. Some said they have been to Craig Swinson's forum, etc, but they didn't like it. Then I told them about this place... :-P They were overjoyed by the idea that there's a forum, and by the fact that volquartsen himself visits it. They all said they'd bookmark your site & check it out.
I also had the opportunity to tinker with (disassemble, etc) someone's Car-15, Mini-14, and I got to play with a HK MP5K. It was a good time that night. Today I'm going home with about 94 CD's which I'll use as targets, etc... I'm going to have some real fun this weekend. I can't wait until the next meeting. We're also having Range Days where the group goes to a nearby indoor range/gunshop/machinegun rental place. It's really nice, I've been there before.
Sorry guys, this weekend, and this new group have me pumped for some target shooting! I can't wait to get my hands on my asprin shooter again! Have a great weekend guys!!!
The Minneapolis Campus is the larger (& Better) of the two. I didn't know that the populace here on campus is as Gun-Nutty as I am. Most people I meet are Complete Media-Biased Anti-Gun Freaks who've never even SEEN a gun in their entire LIFE!
You'd LOVE his campaigning techniques. (Autographs & Sarcasm)
by
When he was campaigning, he was signing tons of autographs, and he sent his representatives for campaigning into the dorms here, and they slid autographed posters of him back in the 80's when he wrestled...
At the governor's debates, he's just let the two-party morons duke it out. He laid back, laughed at them with the rest of us normal people, etc. He also had great (realistic) views upon how we (the people) should be governed. I agreed with many things he said. Especially his support of the CCW permits. I want to get one this upcoming summer when I turn 21. I'm getting a nice glock .40 S&W.
He's the best governor we've ever had in my opinion. He's actually doing something for the public. He sometimes goofs up, but he's human, we love our elected governor. Now we just need the Hulkster & Others for our state representatives, because they suck... Our reps are the worst I've seen in a long time.

PS. I sold my autographed poster for $125.00 to a big Ventura Collector/Fan. He offered $300, but I told him that I didn't need that much (back when I had a job).
To all in the forum, Happy Thanksgiving. Have a great and safe holiday! Though the majority of us do not agree with the Florida Supreme Court, we are still blessed to live where we do and have the freedoms we do enjoy, though they are shrinking!! To Ken, welcome back and do hope you are back at 100% real soon.. Stay safe and remember to keep them up and down range!
I don't quite remember your question, but I think you ask me where to get a R7?...Here are a couple good places. both has excellent service for me, Both will match the lowest advertised price.
Not only do I think it will tune better but it's just a better built gun and more powerful. The cocking effort is not 40lbs, I think they have that wrong BUT it is more than double the power. When doing some small game work, that's very important. As well the R-7 is small if there was a reason to go to an R-7 becuase of size then I would goto a BSA Super Sport as it's smaller then the R-9, cheaper but not as good in the trigger.
For target work unless you are shooting straight 10 meters the gun is a bit underpowered and the 3 inches indifference is a good bit in the pull length. I have about 6 R-9's and 3 R-7's, the R-7 I loan to kids as it's too small...but maybe the gun was for a kid...and if so...I'd maybe go with the BSA SS.
Anyone with experience in, or know about, the barrel in the B&C stock and barrel combo kit? Does B&C make their own barrels? How do they shoot? Got match chamber that requires expensive ammo?
Would one be better off just getting their stock and go to a known quality item like the Green/White Mountain barrel, now that Ken is recovering and production will resume?
Thanks.
Nash
At least that's what they told me when I called them a couple of months ago. I hope that they have enough of the Green Mtn. barrels in inventory to last a while. I hope that Ken gets well soon.
Get a Stainless or Blued Barrel from Ken ~$50-$70 and you'll be set. Add trigger job or Volquartsen hammer$30. Later On or with the money you save add a more powerful scope. www.midwayusa.com has BSA 6x 24 Mil-Dot Scopes #722-612 $99.99 8x32 #610-351 $119.99 4-16x #486-030 $79.99.
Thank you all for the info. Actually I already checked out the VQ Bargain site. Didn't find anything suitable. Also I should have clarified that the VQ HP kit is already installed, as well as having bought a Elite 6-24x40 AO and a WTC 6.5-20x50 AO. One of the two would go on the CZ 452 Varmint, which I had ordered sometime back in September and still waiting for it (which is another story), and the other scope will go on the 10/22 to replace the current Swift 4-12.
A lot depends on the scope mounting, especially the positioning of scope for best eye relief, of the CZ when it finally gets here before my final decision. The 10/22 is easy. It will accommodate either scope with no problems, with the mount and rings I got.
It was Andrew L.'s question on the thumbhold stock that had me started thinking about it. But then, I know that sooner or later I'll have to spring for a bull barrel. Otherwise, I'll be buying the 10/22 stock twice, once for the factory contour job and another for the .920. The factory plastic stock gives me shouder and neck cramps if I shoot over a hundred rounds off-hand. LOL.
Decisions, decisions. So many objects of desire and such limited resources!
Thanks again.

saturday i finally received my vq hp trigger kit and exact edge extractor.installed these with a minimum of effort(excellent instructions from vq).
i was literally astounded at the trigger pull when complete.crisp, light and smooth.so sunday out i go with a bulk pack of federal (what my 3x9x40 scope was sighted in with),a bulk pack of remington golden bullets, one box of cci minimags, and a box of cci stingers.i wanted to get a feel for what shot best out of my bc barrel.the "range" is really just a rock pit,and my rest is my trucks tailgate(i know not the best conditions lol).federal did its usual thing bout an inch or so ( im new to shooting not real steady yet)so far im a happy camper.next tried some rems point of impact about six inches higher than my recticle at about 50 yards, but not even a group that i would consider measruing, cci mini mags about the same,as were the stingers. i dont understand why none of these other ammos would produce any kind of group even if higher than point of aim?do i need to sight in my scope for each particular brand of ammo? also with the cci stingers i had about 3 out of ten misfire with a light pin mark ,time for a new firing pin? i noticed the federals had less recoil and a lighter noise than the rems did,and since the rems had a flatter trajectory is this indicating that the rems are stronger ammunition?
i do understand that the stingers and mini mags are higher velocity and that this will have less drop than cheaper ammo.any help or advice or experience with these ammos or problems is appreciated
If you are trying to shoot little bitty groups, you gotta have a very steady bench, rock steady. Sandbags front AND rear are a must. Tailgates are fine for plinking.
Take notice of your breathing and control it. Try to do everything the exact same way....everytime...little things mean a lot.
You don't need to re-zero your scope for each ammo type..unless that is gonna be your brand. In fact if you are just shooting groups. it helps to be "off target" a bit, so don't blow away your aiming point...just ain in same place and let the bullets fly where they will.
Is this a new barrel? Does it still need some breaking in? Did you check the scope mount and rings...everything tight? I would pull that bolt, yank the firing pin, clean it and the groove it rides in on the bolt, clean the recess in the face of the bolt...carbon and crap can build-up quick with this blow back design.
Perhaps the best advice I can give you is to shoot bigger targets and just have more FUN!Little bitty groups are highly over rated and punching holes in paper will never be as much fun as shooting cans or eggs!
Mismost makes a very good point. Don't let group size determine whether or not you had a good time. If you're interested in achieving the ultimate accuracy possible out of the 22rf round then you're probably not using the right gun and you'll be unhappy. But if you're interested in making strainers out of tin cans or putting some squirl stew meat in the pot you've got a winner.
I got into a discussion with a friend the other day who has absolutely NO interest in competative shooting. In fact his self professed interest is in perforating cans and exploding vegitables and 2 liter bottles of water (his backyard is a mess). My friend is looking for a new gun to use as I just described but insists that he "has to have" a gun capable of groups better than 1/2" at 50 yards. What's really important for his purpose is that he can shoot it accurately from a standing or kneeling position. He couldn't grasp this idea so we went out to the range with a couple of my benchrest rifles. After demonstrating that the rifles can consistently shoot 1/4" groups from the bench. I then let him try to shoot them offhand. The weight and balance of these guns along with the stock design, high power scopes and extremely light triggers make them ill-suited for off-hand shooting. As I expected he had trouble hitting an 8" paper plate at 50 yards.
Then I pulled out my 50 year old Marlin Model 80 with peep sights. From the bench the rifle shoots 1/2" to 3/4" groups on a good day. But shooting it off-hand my friend never missed the paper plate.
Moral of the story is that in practical shooting (i.e., hunting or plinking) the ultimate accuracy of the rifle is only a small part of the equation. Erogomics and shooter ability are far more important. Make your gun comforatable for you to shoot and make it relaible, learn to shoot it well, then worry about wringing the last bit of accuracy out of it.
When testing ammo (i.e., shooting groups for comparison) don't worry about where the point of impact is. High, low, left, or right is not a concern since if the group is good you can move the point of impact under the point of aim using the scopes windage and elevation adjustments.
Cheap ammo is cheap ammo because it is made with less restrictive quality control. Thick or thin rims, lots or little primer compound, longer or shorter cases and heavier or lighter bullets are all possible and WILL give inconsistent results. There is NO magic in a $8.50 box of Lapua Midas M or Eley Tenex ... but there is remarkable consistency from round to round.
Believe it or not the barrel of your gun vibrates like a guitar string every time you pull the trigger and the muzzle traces an arc. With good ammo that arc is the same for every shot ... with cheap ammo the arc is slightly different from shot to shot. Where in the muzzle arc of movement the bullet exits the muzzle determines where the bullet will impact the target. In the case of your gun, sighted for Federal it determines whether the Remington round will impact above, below, left or right of the Federal ammo. When the bullet exits the barrel also determines (in part) how big the group will be. At the top, bottom, left and right extremes of the muzzle motion the barrel stops for a fraction of a second as it changes direction just as a rock thrown straight up stops for an instant just before it starts to fall. If the bullets consistently exit the muzzle at this instant the groups will be smaller than if the bullet exits the muzzle at the middle of the muzzles arc.
What does all this boil down to? Simply this; in all likelyhood your gun will exhibit a preferance for one brand of ammo over all others. From what you've posted it appears that your gun "likes" the Federal and dislikes the Remington and CCI flavors. Don't argue with the gun it won't listen to you, just accept it and go on. Every gun is different and although my gun may like brand X yours may not.
I agree with Jack. And you really should consider....
by
yourself to be blessed with a rifle that can perform in a decent manner with cheap ammo! Quit wishin' for bad luck and knockin' on wood..just shoot that puppy Grasshopper.
instead of shooting off the tailgate of your truck, you might consider standing in the bed of your truck and shoot off the roof of your truck. You can lay an old blanket over the top of your roof and close the ends (that hang over) of the blanket inside the doors. this way the blanket will not shift so much and it gives you a relatively non slip surface.
Then for some inexpensive sandbags, take some old blue jeans, cut off portions of the legs, turn them inside out, sew up one end and half of the other, pull the pants leg back through the unsewn end (now they are right side out) fill with sand, and then sew up the remainder of the open end. Get a small piece of landscaping timber or 4X4 and use for a front rest with the sandbag on top of it and then use the other sandbag under the butt of the rifle. It isn't the best setup, but its a start.
The stuff you were shooting is not known to be the most accurate.Shoot some Winchester Dynapoints, some of the cheaper Eley and RWS and PMC Scoremaster. These are more likely to do better for you.Your rifle will probably like one of these also.Do as Mismost wrote and get off the tailgate and on a bench with sandbags. My advice is to stay away from the Stingers.Clean the bolt and firing pin slot plus the face of the barrel's chamber. If you want to shoot groups and targets then get another scope. If your rifle is to be used a lot for hunting then leave the 3x9 on it.Good luck.
You need to shoot more types of ammo to find what yours likes best, and better rest will help.
I have about 30 types of 22 ammo on my shelf, as I have searched for the best for my rifle. It doesn't cost a lot, and finding the right load is half the fun.
In my experience, the cheapest bulk ammo usually will not be the best. Try some standard velocity ammo. Best high velocity I have tried is Winchester Power Point and Federal American Eagle. Best of the inexpensive is usually Winchester Dynapoints from K-Mart. PMC Scoremaster (standard velocity) can usually be found for about $15 or $17 per brick in my parts, and shoots very well. Aguila standard velocity and Aguila Golden Eagle Pistol Match also perform well for the money. For me, the difference in performance from the premium ammos such as Eley Tenex, RWS, or Federal Gold Match doesn't justify the difference in price versus PMC Scoremaster or Aguila SE standard velocity. Just my .02.
Every Bullett is designed to do a different job.
You will not find any two bulletts to shoot the
same.
We deer hunt in Michigan everybody knows once you
sight in with a type of ammo that works stay with
it.
Bulletts all have different weights, for longer
distance or for more shocking power and depending
on what type of annimal you plan on harvesting
the requirements are different.
The samr thing with rifles you would not want to shoot big game with a 22cal
See ya:

If its a small pickup get 3 milkcrates 2 to set on 1 to put on the tailgate for a rest. Use a towel or old duffelbag on top of the crate as a rest. If full-size get 3 crates to set on. Site for each velocity of ammo. Even with the same Feet per second the ammo has different characteristics. Find one such as the Remington Subsonic Winchester Super-x or CCI-Mini Mags snd shoot with it you will get used to its characteristics.
Hey Yoteman, thanks for the tips for working on stock hammer....
by
After reading your e-mail, I have been working on my son's stock hammer. Been taking the ledge down very slowly using a small arkansas stone with a bit of honing oil. Just take it out from time to time, try to make even strokes, and polish afterwards with 800 and 1500 grit wet paper. Since this is my first attempt at doing a trigger job myself, afraid of going very fast with any type of power tool.
Trigger pull had to be 8 - 10 lbs out of box. Now I can point rifle down, cock it (after making sure it is unloaded), put finger on trigger, let go of rifle with other hand, and it will snap, so trigger pull must now be under 5.5 lbs. Slow but steady progress.
Probably not as good as the gunsmith job on my A&B barreled rifle, and probably not anwhere close to CPC, but having fun doing it. Besides, I'm not sure I want my son's trigger breaking at 1.75 or 2 lbs. By doing myself, I can stop when I am comfortable with it. Thanks again!
I don't generally recommend trigger work for the uninitiated but if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and don't mind experimenting on a factory part that you might have to replace, fair results can be obtained. Having said that, there is a rather abrupt point of no return with these triggers and you must be vigilant to avoid going too far on the 'soft' hammers. My 1970 vintage stock carbine had a dead soft hammer in it and I had to go to a replacement hammer. Tread lightly and shoot sensitive primered ammo first (Federal bulk pack) and when you can live with the trigger, STOP. Good luck. [:>)
....maybe. Add shipping costs ($15 if you're lucky, $25 more'n likely, more if the 'dealer' uses 'shipping & handling costs' as a profit center. Now add your FFL's transfer fees; another $25-35-50, depending.
Now compare that to the price @ Wally World ($139). Still a deal? *heh heh* As Paul Harvey sez, "And now, the rest of the story."
thanks, i had made a post earlier about a match rifle

i was asking where to get one that's suitable for begginers, someone suggested a model 1903 for 705 bucks plus the money for a sight system, they said to look at champion's choice, and since i already knew that champion shooters charges 750 for a lefty 1903 i thought he must have meant a different site. thanks i guess it probably wasnt champion's choice
I think but I don't know if it is on the internet...if the person that said goto champions choice can provide a link we are both set. Champion shooters will beat any price anyway...as they are the distributors for Anschutz...they will be hard to beat.
Sorry, I should have given you the contact info when I posted originally. Their catalog doesn't list a web page. Their email is champchoice@nashville.com. Their phone number is 615-793-4066; their locale is 201 International Blvd, LaVergne, TN 37086.
The price which I quoted is from their current catalog, dated 2000-2001, so I believe that they will stand by the price quoted.
The 1903L is cat #2101900 ($705.00) and the 6834L sights are cat #7000061 ($220.00)
