...is all pervasive in glasgow; the most common tribal association. So, rangers fans associate with authority, the establishment, tradition, protestantism. Celtic fans associate with the underdog, the disaffected, the irish, catholicism. Rangers fans will wave union jacks, english flags (and also more recently scottish flags), also some stars of david. The celtic fans will wave palestinian flags, che guevara flags (that big fan of the pope!), irish tricolours. Recently even some brazilian flags in honour of their oppressed brother ruthlessly cut down by 'the man' in the london tube station. And it goes deeper. The glasgow muslims associate with celtic because it most reflects their culture and sikhs support rangers because they are keen to be seen as 'establishment' and also presumably to piss off the muslims. Sometimes there's football involved.... In euro 96 I actually felt a bit sorry for you guys (no really!) It seemed to me to be the only time i've seen england express a common identity that was positive. I couldn't have you winning the fucking thing tho! Jeeeeeez, 66 an all that.
