Turkish Textbooks to See Change in Genocide Wording

Published: Thursday January 22, 2009

ANKARA (Combined Sources)--Students in Turkey will see a change in the way the 1915 Armenian Genocide is taught in their schools with text books covering the period will no longer use words that blatantly negate the reality of the genocide, reported the Turkish Hurriyet Daily on Thursday.

Text books for Turkish 8th graders will no longer refer to the Armenian genocide as a baseless accusation or a so-called genocide, Hurriyet said. Instead, the 8th text books that cover the issue will refer to the Genocide only as the 1915 events.

The curriculum change comes after a review by the Coordination Board to Fight Baseless Genocide Claims (ASIMKK), the Education Ministry and the Head Council of Education and Morality.

As a result, the 8th grade curriculum for the course Revolution History and Kemalism has been amended, as well as its official description. The sentence describing the curriculum as one that will teach the historical development of Turkish-Armenian relations and Armenian allegations, has been replaced with a statement that says the curriculum will teach Turkish-Armenian relations, 1915 events and related Armenian allegations.
