The panel of intellectuals held a monitoring in February-March this year of all 17 TV companies in Armenia, and by 74 votes it was decided that the most unpleasant is the Armenian Public Televisions broadcast. Armenia TV is in the second place according to unpleasantness and vulgarism.
Of course, very often Armenia TV surpasses the Armenian Public Television by its unpleasantness, however the following logic was working if private TV companies do not have the right to broadcast low quality product, then the Public Television has to deliver a high quality TV broadcast, says Narek Malyan, the author of the Awards idea, head of the Experts Union non-governmental organization (NGO) and coordinator of the Awards.
He states that the Public Television has no need to struggle for a rating, since it gets subsidy from the state, and it is meant to create educational TV programs. According to him Public Television subsidy from the state budget daily makes some $48,000 (about 17 million drams) which is more as compared to all the budgets of the 17 private TV companies together.
Director of the Armenian Public Television Armen Arzumanyan declined to comment when contacted by ArmeniaNow.
The only TV Company that, according to the monitoring, does not have violations and language perversions, is Hayrenik (Homeland) TV Channel that targets childrens audience.
Along with the Awards prize, the coordination group will send the winning TV Company the results of the monitoring, stating what violations have been registered, which films and TV programs, according to the monitoring group, are considered to be unpleasant and unacceptable.
The objective of the Awards is to fight against low quality TV, so that watching TV becomes safe for children, says Malyan.
The authors of the Awards plan a few versions of punishment.
We may suggest announcing a public boycott, and not to watch low quality and anti-educational products of the TV companies, or to present the results of the monitoring to major advertisers so that they do not put their ads in those TV channels, Malyan says.
