Medvedev wants harsh action in Caucasus
18 Aug 2009
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called for stepping up counter-terrorism efforts in the North Caucasus and eliminating terrorists in the strife-battered area.
"Some time ago, there was the impression that the situation with terrorism in the Caucasus had considerably improved," he said at an official meeting on counter-terrorism in the city of Stavropol. "Unfortunately, the latest events show that this is not the case."
Medvedev went on to underline that Moscow's goal is a general stabilization. He meanwhile called for a ruthless crackdown on terrorists in the volatile region.
"We should keep fighting them and eliminate them without any emotions and hesitation. Otherwise we won't make any progress," he commented.
