Well, after 23 years of entertaining children at BDay parties, fests, fairs, block parties, etc., as a clown and non-clown magician character, it was last year that I decided that I would only perform BDay parties in the Chicagoland area. I've given up on all other events.
I'm spending 100% of my marketing on Day Care Centers and BDay party shows. Why Day Care Centers you ask? During my Day Care Center magic shows, I mention to the children about how much fun I had performing this particular trick at little David or Rebecca's BDay party. Repeating this just a few times during the show, the children will go home, tell their Moms & Dads how much fun they had, and oh, by the way, maybe we could have Mr. Bob at my BDay party.
I am tired of big crowds, and unruly children. I could pass out 100 business cards at a public event and recieve not one booking. With BDay parties, there are always repeats, word of mouth and referrals.
Of course, the most important thing, you have to LOVE the children you are performing for. I enjoy performing for small intimate groups.
I don't miss the make-up, which I have been applying for the 1st 19 years of performing as a clown. Will I ever apply make-up again? Sure, but they have to pay me the BIG bucks and that's not too often.
I could go on and on about marketing...that's a whole different subject. A subject that I love to to take on.
Keep em Smiling,
