How pliable is vinyl?

December 16 2004 at 11:34 PM

Some time ago when I was just getting in to ventriloquism I bought on of the chimps but made of vinyl. I find it relatively hard to manipulate the mouth and am wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. Are there any solutions to amking the mouth more flexible?
thanks
Joe

Ax..heck of a good question. The word vinyl is confusing me. Do the Ax people figures have vinyl faces? My thought was you use latex. Ron

Vinyl vs. Latex

Vinyl is not as flexible as latex. The chimp when made in vinyl can be a little difficult because the mouth is not very deep. The 32" isn't as bad simply because it's bigger. However, some of the vinyl chimps are easier than others because the molding process isn't exact...inside the hot rotating metal mold the vinyl drips around to cover the surface and could drip over the edges of the mouth in some cases.

Thin vinyl can be acceptable for puppets, but natural latex has more stretch and is softer. The advantage is that vinyl is inexpensive and can be mass produced while latex is much more labor intensive.

We have our vinyl puppets made in China so they are more "mass / toy" oriented.

Until we find a better material than latex you can't beat it. Latex Rocks!
