This has been an interesting week so far, with two more shows tomorrow. On Thursday I did a Jewish celebration called Purim, celebrating the story of Esther. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I have Easter shows but for different age groups from whole family to preschool to elementary. In fact, in my elementary show tonight (Sat.) I found that half of the kids had seen the show on Friday night so I quickly switched gears.
You may think that your audience is the preschooler, then the elementary age, then the adults, but in each case the audience is the person who hired you. If they are happy you succeeded. If you had the preschoolers screaming with laughter and begging for more, BUT you didn't do something the person who hired you asked for then you blew it.
I've known performers who were given a specific time limit but when they saw the audience enjoying themselves they went on and on. Sure, the audience loved them, BUT they won't be asked back.
I once did a school two years in a row. The first year they gave me 4 points they wanted me to cover and I did. Great. The second year they had a new principal (same points) and I never had a chance to ask the points. I couldn't remember them. So I taught the same concept using the system I use at every other school. The kids ate it up! They laughed like crazy and they learned new things. The result: The teachers told the principal it was better the year before. (The kids would have disagreed.) It is now 4 years later and I have never been asked back.
By the way, Happy Easter, Happy Purim, and enjoy your Spring Break!
Hopefully nobody will squeal on your show not being kosher! Do you do pig-nics? Can people take pig-tures? Has your wife warned you, "Lips that touch swine shall never touch mine?" I had a pig but he got a professional football contract.
