After years of teaching(1-12) I found the biggest problem with kids drawing bored is an instructional problem. First, teach them the basics(perspective, shadings etc.) and then challenge them to produce their own works. Denada.

Drawing Board ideas

My favorite use of the drawing board for religious education is the story of the creation of Adam. I draw the first man (head only) and then have the kids breath onto the picture. I talk of how the word for breath is the same as the word for spirit. I believe that God gave us a part of himself at that point, a part of his spirit. The drawing comes to life.
