Cry baby

January 1 2009 at 6:54 PM

I have a question about the "cry baby". Why does everyone hold it up so unnaturally. Can it be operated if it was more held and cuddled like a real baby? Also could you use "the hand" on it. If I switched the gloved hand for a hand from the magic store would that look like I was hold the baby? I have all soft puppets, I assume that the cry baby operates mouth movements and head switch with a rod like the traditional puppets.

There is no rod control on the head. Your hand is inside the baby's head to both work the mouth and spin the head.

People hold the baby vertically because it is easier to see on stage. However, you can hold it lower (near horizontal) as though cuddling. I have it on my right hand and it talks to a volunteer on my left side. Then I hold it down horizontally and as I hand off the baby I make a semicircle (his head goes from my right side to my left) and in that movement I reverse the head. You cannot control the mouth on the crying face, just on the happy face.
