For those who do mass mailouts it is now the time to send letters to schools. In California much of the school assembly money seems to come from PTA's (or PTO's) i.e. parent-teacher organizations. Therefore it is good to address the letter to the PTO President. Be sure to have photos, preferably an action photo or two, plus references and a list of What's In It For The School.
Visit www.tonyborders.com for ideas on school assembly topics and a quick synopsis of each.
Your letters will need to be in the mail by mid-September and the earlier the better.
ALSO: Libraries are considering their fall and winter speakers now. A reminder letter or e-mail that you are out there and have a show for that season may send them back to your website. They are very good at word of mouth so if you're just getting started be sure to list ALL of the libraries you were at in the last couple of years.
by mid-October many places have their December shows lined up, including daycares. They need to send paperwork in to corporate headquarters for your checks. So you will want to get mid to late September notifications out to daycares, after school care (they look for entertainment during winter break), and malls or even strip malls. (Many strip malls are hiring entertainers for the holiday season.)
In mid-December you can send letters out to Cub Scout groups for their February Blue and Gold banquets. Best of luck!

I've just printed up 13 5"x7" pictures that I am going to make into postcards.
I plan on mailing those out to elementary schools first.
I have been doing magic for 2 years now since I've started to advertise in the phone book and the internet. This will be a first for me. It is actually pretty cheap as far as advertising goes. Overall, I will spend less then $10 for what I'm sending out today and tomorrow.
Many more to follow.
