Keep in mind that you can lengthen any show by adding a different interesting hobby or talent to it. Over the years I have used each of the following in some aspect:

Mime
Draw cartoon faces
Balloon twists
Songs
Drama
Act like a little kid
Puppets
Magic
Ventriloquism
Guitar
Digital Drums
Sign language
Flannelgraph
Overhead
Shadows from overhead
Blacklight puppetry
Blacklight ventriloquism
Blacklight magic
Object Lessons
Competitions
Question and Answer
Poetry
Rap

Today's kids want to be participants. So think of that as well. Most of the above are showpieces so I'm having to learn how to involve the audience as well.

A fellow recently wrote a long poem and presented it to our church. It was based on 1 Corinthians 13 in the Bible, known as the Love Chapter. He said that we should all say, "love" when he pointed out at the audience. Then he recited his poem from memory. We really paid attention so we wouldn't miss our cues and we had a great time, even as adults.

Time to update?

I've had the same acoustic guitar for 25 years and told myself that guitars get better with age. But as I took a guitar class I realized I was struggling on a few frets to make the strings sound clearly. So I went to the guitar store and started playing around. I found a noticeable difference! I did my research and picked one out in my price range (actually, in my wife's price range). Love it! Now my daughter gets my old guitar and I hope to start her on guitar lessons right away.

Check your show props. I have a yellow silk that's still in one show bag and it has a big rip in it! Come on, Tony! Get with it! My skunk puppet is now tan instead of white because I kept him on display in my house. California sunshine gives everyone a tan. I need to send him in for a new paint job (face lift?). I replaced a suitcase recently that I used for rolling puppets into a birthday party. It was looking pretty nasty. I LOVE the new one!

I ask myself, "If I saw this at a yard sale in this condition, would I want to buy it?" If not, it really isn't worth keeping.
