What words of wisdom would you impart to a new ventriloquist in training?

I have found this site to have lots of great infomation for someone starting out. Also, I have been watching lots of YouTube videos to see what other vents are doing.

But, on top of that what would you recommend a new vent read, watch, buy, link to, clubs, newsletters and other forums to join and basic neat stuff to know?

Looking forward to hearing your words of wisdom.

1. Make your equipment at least as good as your talent. In all other crafts and trades people upgrade their equipment to make their jobs easier and/or better. But many ventriloquists attach a sentimental feeling to their "tool" when it should really be updated. My magic needs updating!
2. Spin one plate at a time. Focus on one aspect of your performance until you feel comfortable with it. Singing, echo, distant voice, etc. can all be used BUT learn one at a time. Once it is easy to keep that plate spinning you can concentrate on the next addition.
3. Be a performer, not a collector.
4. Good news! You are just as famous as 99% of the people who have been doing this for years! If you market yourself you're probably even more famous!
5. Join a local speaker's club, magic club, Puppet club, etc. One is probably enough.
6. Join a businesses club where local businesses meet each other and exchange cards.
7. If you're pretty good try to get on local TV talk shows. Great way to get the word out.
8. Ask the local librarian if they have a library showcase for performers. Try to get into it next time around. The good news is that they love to see new people.
9. Have professional photos and mailouts made. It's cheaper than ever. Get permission to use the photos, however you like. (They may ask for their name to be on the photo.)
10. Have a website.
11. Have fun.

Good stuff there...

Go to Vent Haven to really launch your motivation, see great vents and commit to the craft. http://www.venthaven.com

Get more than one instructional source. Get a book and a DVD by different authors. We have several herehttp://www.axtell.com/catresor.html
