I have to "start" a small business [on paper only] for a class I'm taking at a local junior college. [associate's degree].
Given my interest in puppets/venting, I thought I'd used that as a basis for this hypothetical business. i.e. I don't have to actually start the business, just do everything on paper.
Can someone give me some ideas? For example, should I call this an entertainment business? or what?
Are they wanting the specifics or the outline of the business? Ex. Do they want to know the steps you would take, such as opening a website, applying for a city license, getting insurance... or do they want to know what your business is?
For the latter:
Entertainer vs. entertainment The first is a person, the second a company that provides more than one person.
Services provided Traveling puppet show for audiences, particularly young audiences.
Expected clients Schools, libraries, churches, Blue and gold scout banquets, daycares, park and rec programs, birthday parties, fairs, festivals, children's museums...
Geographic range of clients Any of the above within (?) miles of _________________.
Expected costs Inventory $3,000 per year (puppets, magic, sound equipment, staging)
Travel $4,000 per year (mileage, tolls, hotels, airfare)
Insurance $300 per year (performer's insurance)
Advertising $3,000 the first year (postage, printing, booths at conferences, google ad words, website, etc.)
$1500 each additional year
Business phone: n/a (will use home phone)
Office rental: n/a (will run from home)
Possible tax savings on office in the home.
Optional:
Sales of product after show (I don't do this but others may chip in and say how much you can expect)
Number of shows per year: It will take a minimum of 150 to consider it full-time and it is difficult to get more than 220 in a good year. So 150-200 is a good estimate. This is 3 to 4 per week. That lets you know how much your AVERAGE fee should be.
Ex. Average $200 would only give you $30,000 before expenses (listed above) if you had 150 shows. So you want to charge more than $200 for schools, churches, and perhaps libraries. Daycares, birthdays, and parks and rec will want to pay less than $200.
