Bear is GRRReat!

March 27 2002, 8:39 AM

I have used several vent puppets over the years, but the audience keeps choosing the bear! No matter what I do, when I come back they say, "Did you bring the bear?" Now he opens and closes each show and he may soon have a part in the middle! His personality? He is always hungry! He mistakes the audience for a buffet, asks the volunteer to run around because he likes fast food, loves children (they're delicious), etc. He was a wedding gift from Gene Cordova and has been wonderful!

I love Ax Puppets

October 17 2006, 6:19 AM

I now have the Vinyl Orangutan and the Pelican and I love them both!!!

Also have the Axtell Magic Drawing Board and the Special F/X Drawing Board

Maybe in the near future I can get a Latex Orangutan and a Cry Baby
and I also dream of having the Toucan and the Bongo gorilla

My favorite so far is the Orangutan because he's so cute and the kids love him. Also love the pelican because I think I gave him a great voice and character.

Been doing puppets only since Aug 2006...just barely two months.
I dont have a strong routine, my jokes bomb, the act is short but the puppets are just GREAT!!! they look so good that the kids look at them all the time and they dont notice my weak lip control

Check them out at...

My orangutan

June 12 2007, 3:49 PM

Hi,
I am Ribbons the clown and I am new at being serious at ventriloquism. I have been clowning for 14 years and using a ventriloquist puppet all that time. BUT I just moved her and talked. Now I am serious and loving it. I just bought a orangutan. I took out all her body stuffings, my arm is her spine and boy can she move now. I added screen door rods for arm rods (learned all that from Dan Horn) I'd recomend his dvd to learn how to move a puppet.
I put a bow in her hair and a dress on her. I am looking foward to getting into the contest, but dont want to make my appearence to soon. I was thinking of waiting till after the conVENTion in July. I am hoping to get into the open mic cause I signed up for the senior mic and its full. I hope I get in cause I have to lug around my large shoes, custom, makeup etc. and I would hate to do that and not get on stage.... anyway, my favorite puppet is the orangutan.
I told my husband I like my puppet so much I am afraid if my house was on fire I'd grap her before my cats. I would grap my Bible, my cats and somehow my puppet. I LOVE my Niki ( orangutan is that how you spell it)

Hey Walu check out my Niki she is the same one you use. You-Tube "Ribbons the clown"

You can see her at my web site: www.ribbonstheclown.com

Painted scenic backdrops

November 24 2006, 2:47 PM

Wanlu (and others):

I saw your videos posted in former messages. Very impressive! I especially liked your beautiful backdrops. What are they made of? Did you find them online or have them specially painted for you? I have seen lots of scenic muslin backdrops on ebay but the large size makes it impractical.

Hi Tony,

What particular video are you reffering to so I can check out the backdrop. Here in Manila, the usual stage backdrop for kiddie parties are coco cloth, tarpouline or styro...

If I had a turkey I would incorporate the following:

Near Thanksgiving and Christmas he pretends to be a parrot, or some other inedible bird.

His goal in life is to find Colonel Sanders and thank him for not inventing Kentucky Fried Turkey.

He is the greatest representation of second place. He was ALMOST the national bird! Ben Franklin voted for him, but the eagle won out. This leads to a look at different coins with the eagle on them. The group called the Eagles with their hit songs. The phrase, "Fly like an eagle" would become fly like a turkey. What's so great about a Bald eagle anyway? And an eagle doesn't taste good. (What do they taste like?) Like a California Condor.

The turkey could also write to NBC. He wants to replace the peacock.

I haven't owned a turkey, but I imagine he would fold down into a small box so it would look like a magic trick just popping him out of the box, with the back tail springing into place. That would be his hiding place.

You could have a turkey call contest with audience members. Get a few volunteers and show them how to do a proper turkey call and then vote by applause on who would make the best turkey.

"My wife is a great cook, but everyone agrees that I make a better turkey!"

Using Duncan the Donut

April 12 2007, 9:15 PM

You can use Duncan if you don't use him for pay. If you use him for pay then write to the Donut Man (website www.donutman.com) and ask him. He may just ask that you use him only with the voice given him from one of his tapes. I can't recall a song specifically for the Donut to sing, however.

I feel silly now

June 12 2007, 3:58 PM

Hi,
I'm Ribbons the clown. I just read you message and it made me realize something. I once opened at "Praise 92" or was it 93 in PA for "Duncan" from the Donut man. BUT now I am thinking maybe it was just someone with that puppet. All this time I have been braging and it may have not been the real guy. Although it might have been cause the year before he was there as the Donutman and we helped him. Well I sure do feel silly!!!!
Anyway thanks for the laugh.

Re: I want them all

May 23 2007, 10:08 PM

I had to say goodbye to my Pelican and say hello to my new Cockatoo which is better with the birdarm illusion because of the size...

So far Im using:

Gonzo The Orangutan (2 Vinyl Orangutans but fortunately the new one is much softer so I'm using the old one if its SOLO Gonzo act...and the softer one for the left hand if paired with the Cockatoo with the right Birdarm.) Nowhere close to Kevin Johnson but Im working on it maybe a decade or two of training and I'm there.

Max The Bulldog

Kaka the Cockatoo

WISHLIST:

Cry Baby, Ostrich and Cow

I enjoyed your photos. This is the type of backdrop I would love to get. Please tell me what it is made of and how it folds down, and how it is supported. Thanks!

Also, On the East Coast of the United States Kaka is what a baby does in its diaper. Just so you'll know.

Ha ha Kaka Thanks for the info...

The backdrop is made of Styro...glued and/or nailed on wood braises.

It takes awhile to set it up...and you will need a crew to do that...

This is what we usually have for decors in parties...there are a few installed around the venue including the entrance and even the ceiling

Thanks

I was thinking about your question. Which is your favorite Axtell product? I realized that this is like asking, "Which is your favorite child?" Each one has strengths that come shining through in particular areas. I love the kangaroo, but currently only have one strong routine for her. She is very strong in that show.

You have to love it!

Tony..you would have lost your ex-teacher papers if you hadn't help rename Kaka! Of course. the gringos at General Motors in the seventies couldn't understand why their new car the No Va wasn't selling in Spanish speaking countries.
Now, of course, Canadians have great Spanish names. For example, In Republica Dominica in the early 70's I had almost unlimited free drinks The folks down there would say (insert question mark)..como se llama. I'd say..Ron..and as great hosts they'd give me a shot of rum. Of course they were also convinced this Canuck had serious problems. Ronaldo
