I read your whole post the first time, and I said it was something I myself would not do (personally, I would not put my very high prey-drive dogs OR my very small "bite-size" pets through totally unnecessary STRESS, but that's just moi) -- And it won't stop others from doing whatever they darn well please, so there's no need for anyone to get their panties in a twist <:-)
My dogs are recall-reliable offlead all the time, thanks to being well-trained, but I don't walk them leash-less along busy highways as a way to proof their obedience dependability -- However, we do socialize with other people's horses offlead without any misbehavior & my leash-less dogs are not allowed to harass livestock or wildlife...
But here's how my Shaka interacts with mice that invade our property, though: It's See prey, Kill prey, Eat prey, LOL -- She wags her tail joyfully all the while having the time of her life, being a much better mouser than any cat we've ever had ... Oh, and the mice bite her back as often as possilbe, but they are NOT playing & neither is she (!!!)
Could I get Shaka & Lazar to tolerate letting my pet cockatiels & domesticated rats "buffalo" them & bite them "for fun" ??? Probably, but it would only take one tiny mishap in the twinkling of an eye for a tragedy to occur & that would NOT be fair to either my little critters OR to my dear dogs -- You have every right to do as you like in your own home, of course...
