Groundwork & pack-structure "settling in" are paramount for adult adoptees & should come before obedience training, especially for rescues with any "issues" IMHO...

Clicker motivation & remote-control training are helpful once you move on to doing obedience work, particularly with dogs who are head-shy and/or neck-sensitive...

Jan Fennell's eye-opening book, "The Dog Listener", is tops for non-confrontational behavior modification, IMHO -- Her techniques can work "miracle cures" on rescues who come to you with issues ... And of course, "Be the Pack Leader", by Cesar Millan <:-)
