She has two Akitas, and they are both barkers. I emailed her to find out when Chief started his barking. She might even post here herself...Her female is only 7 months, and is barking, but she could have learned that from Chief.
When she barks for no reason - maybe she does hear something that you don't? I know sometimes our dogs (an Akita and a lab mix), will bark, when I don't hear a thing.
