Response to country living |
|
We are just outside the city limits on 7 acres. When we moved in, L tried to explain to our neighbor about Akitas.
Her response (regarding her Goldens), "They can hold their own." She also said her husband didn't believe in fencing in dogs and that they occasionally lost one to the traffic on the road. Ugh.
We had a small fenced area (with shade) by our barn where we put the dogs for exercise until we had money to buy fencing for the yard (and L had time to install it). However, Blaze went into heat shortly after we moved in, so Teddy was in the yard during the day & Blaze was crated in the house while I was at school (and L. was out of town for work). I was walking Blaze on leash before dawn and after sunset the first week and yelling at the male Golden to go on home.
The Golden kept coming over to our house & marking the corners. I yelled at him to go home when I walked to the mailbox & he acted like he was going to come after me. L. had to go tell them to keep their dogs penned up until Blaze was out of heat & they put up a temporary run.
When we lived in Mobile, AL, we had a fence for our dogs, but most people in the area did not. It was NOT fun walking Chicita when she was in heat. (We walked our dogs for a mile or so each morning & evening.) One dog kept coming & sitting on our front door step & whining at 5:00 a.m. while she was in heat. We asked around & found out who he belonged to & L. went to the owner's house & woke her at 6:00 on Saturday morning to let her know her dog needed to stay off our front step. | |
