What a great event to do with the dogs. You keep yourselves and your dogs physically fit and in the process put a good face out there for the breed. Very commendable.

Now for me...maybe I will start running with mine around the backyard. That's pretty much all I could manage LOL.

When's the last time you tried to run around your backyard with your akitas? LOL

I am only asking because I just got my fence up and was outside running back and forth trying to get them to run and they followed me a couple times but then went off on thir own and I was still running back and forth by myself as they looked over at me like I was nut's ( why is she running back and forth like that sorta look) LOL

They sure know how to make humans feel stupid:)

well I was having visions of myself

leashing the dogs to my waistband like some of the people here have and then seeing a rabbit or something cross the cornfield behind us and be more like barefoot skiing! Might be more fun though. I am SO not a runner. Aero will run around the yard with me, but that's because he thinks he's getting ready to show and he LOVES that.

LOL

I tried taking my first akita Taz on bike rides with me. I rode with her leash in hand and she would run along side and then one day a flock of birds/ducks landed on the sidewalk in front of me and she took me down!

That was the end of that! :)LOL

I know the feeling, I love taking my dogs for bike rides but when we first started there were a few times I almost went down! Lucky they know they are not allowed to chase things now happy.gif

What do you mean?

Not allowed?

I want to know how do you train the natural instinct out of an akita cause I could train them till I am blue in the face and I still would not trust then when it came to ducks:)LOL Oh and bikes!

Blinders

December 14 2008, 11:44 PM

Hi, I've never tried this, but I know some people have put blinders (like on horses) to keep their attention focused.

I've never been brave enough to try biking my Akita either. Too much going on in my subdivision for easy distraction. PLUS the occasional loose dog.

Well, we have not seen ducks while riding, but we have ton of rabbits and squirrels! Took lots of practice to teach them to ignore it!
