normal routine stuff and some shots. I am so curious on how much she weighs now! we trimmed her nails last night which is always hilarious. she is a little toeshy after a vet tech cut it too close once, i play with her feet all the time and she gets to sniff the trimmers and gets cheese but sometimes she yanks the foot away when you trim. she did great last night no pulling away and no close calls. she has white nails so that helps on seeing the quick.

Toenails

More power to all of you who use trimmers! There is no way I could do it - sticking to my dremmel.

Good luck at the vet!

Dremmel

February 9 2009, 10:57 AM

Ericka,

I am such a wimp when it comes to trimming the nails because I had a really horrible incident with my first akita who had all black nails. I cut one too short and there was so much blood all over my house it looked like a crime scene. I had no styptic powder at the time either and finally just used a handful of flour.

Ever since then I have been so weary of trimming nails. I have heard others talk about the dremmel but always thought my two would go crazy if I tried that thing on them but recently I took a file to Bruto's nails and he let me do it.. no problems so I am wondering if he might do ok with the dremmel.

My questions are how long does it take to do each nail? Does it take a long time? How often do you do this to keep them short? Have you ever had any problems and what dremmel do you recommend?

Thanks

Kathy

Re: Dremmel

Kathy, if I had to use a trimmer, my dogs would never get done! I love the dremmel! I bought mine at Home Depot.

If you buy one, get a multi-speed plug in. The battery powered ones don't last long and the single speed are too fast. I break my dogs in by just turning it on when they are in the room. Then I start putting them on the grooming table and turning it on. Then I start touching toes with it quickly and usually have them broke in within a week. I've never had one get scared of it (knock on wood).

Touch the dremmel to the toenail and it works like a fast nail file. Make sure you move it around to shape the nail instead of holding it in one place. Do not press hard. You will start to see the quick and that's when you stop. You should never make the dog bleed using a dremmel. It usually takes me 5-10 seconds per nail. I keep their nails very short - to the hair line. (yes, this is one of my OCD issues as I hate long nails) It takes me just a few minutes to do all the feet once a week.

My only word of caution - if you have long nails like I do, try not to dremmel them too. I've ruined nice manicures that way. LOL!

Don't press to hard and don't be afraid or they will sense that on you and become afraid. Hope this helps!

Thanks:)

Thanks for that info. Actually back in my younger years I went to school and got licensed as a nail technician and we used a dremmel type tool(same thing just sold and marketed through beauty supply) on human nails for acrylics etc. So I do have experience with them:).

I think I still have one. I am going to pull it out and see how Bruto reacts to the sound. He is really weird about power tools and stuff. He hates them! ONCE a week you do this!!!!! OMG!

Dremmel

February 9 2009, 7:53 PM

L already had a dremmel tool, so we just bring it in out of the garage to do toenails. He'll sit on the floor, take a paw & just do it. It doesn't take long at all--probably less time than trying to deal with clippers since that was always a huge 2 person chore for us.

Our conformation handler can do Teddy's nails in under 5 minutes and still carry on a conversation.

Let us know how it goes!!

Mikko seems to have finally filled out (he's just about 3), so I wonder what he weighs too happy.gif

Charlie (lab mix) HATES having his nails cut. Must have had a bad experience before he got to my house. Poor guy. Luckily Mikko doesn't mind the clippers, even though he has been "gotten" a couple times before. His nails are clear, which is awesome, but I had hubby cute them once...that's all I'll say happy.gif

I have told hubs about the dremmel!

February 9 2009, 11:43 AM

im surprised we don't have one with all the tools he has. im not sure how she'll react im sure she would be ok after a lot of getting used to. she thinks the vacuum is play time but only when its on so the noise gets her running zoomies. don't want a whizzing dremmel to start up a zoomie haha.

Zoomies!

February 9 2009, 12:58 PM

Ha, that's why I have a grooming table so no zoomies are allowed! :-) But he does zoomie right over to the table when he sees a brush or the dremmel come out. He loves me time!
