NAR re: Vets

Marquee (my Elkhound) has a cyst on his tail that has been problematic for some time now. It ruptured again yesterday and it's finally time to have it surgerically removed. I called the vet's office this morning, where the one I see works Mondays, Wednesday, and Saturdays in the office I go to. The receptionist told me I couldn't get on the surgery schedule today, they were overbooked Wednesday, no surgeries on Saturday, nothin available Monday, and the first I could get in was the 18th. Uh no! I told her what was wrong and could she please talk to the vet, and she said sorry this is what I have. I scheduled the 18th.

BUT, I have my vet's cell phone and home numbers too. I called his cell and his wife answered so I left a message with her. She said he would call me back in 10 minutes. Well 1 1/2 hours later he hadn't called so I texted him in which he called me right back. I told him the issue and he said he could squeeze me in this Wednesday and he would make time or bump one of the "elective" surgeries. The receptionist called me back about 30 minutes later to confirm the appointment - she was very snotty.

Whole point of this story, it is so important to have a good relationship with your vet. The reception people (generally) only look at what the computer tells them and doesn't ask the vet. Or they do not understand what is wrong and the urgency. I'm very persistent when it comes to my dogs and it pays off.

Also, if you could all do me a favor and think positive thoughts for Marquee on Wednesday. He's 12 and doing any surgery at this age is risky. Thanks!

Have good thoughts and prayers going to Marquee for a smooth and easy surgery.I have Jasmine who will be 16 May 1st so I know how scary surgery can be.

I agree wholeheartedly about the vet. My vet is in a clinic that is walk in and the receptionists deal with alot of idiots all day. They do not take appt. just walk in. Recently they told me they couldn't see a rescue I had for a rabies to transport him the next morning. I asked to talk to my vet and she stayed after to get us in. She has done soo much for my 4 girls I could never repay her.

You will both be in our thoughts.

Julie
