Do you bring your keeters in for yearly exams, or only as needed?

I was just thinking, Mikko hasn't been in for quite some time. Not sure if I should bring him in for a check-up, if everything seems OK.

We do go yearly.........

February 9 2009, 2:31 PM

but it always ends up more.......for little things. Between all their surgeries and hip problems we go alot.
Jasmine has been on Rimadyl for 8 years so she has to go regularly for bloodwork.
My vet told me last time that our file is sooo big she needs a shelf just for it!!

My vet is going paperless and my file is super fat too. He said the techs were not going to be happy when it came to scanning mine. :-)

I guess yearly- what about yearly rabies?

February 9 2009, 2:45 PM

We got the postcard saying shots were due so Im guessing it will be a yearly event. Our vet does the yearly rabies but should i ask about the every 3 yr shot?? what is the debate on that? moneymaker? necessary?

Last dog had the fat file too so i would love not to repeat that!

3 year Rabies.......

February 9 2009, 3:19 PM

thats what most are doing now...Our vet has changed so not all shots are given at the same time..........they will all be rotating years. There is alot of controversy on whether or not one shot gives them immunity for life with certain vaccines.
We give Distemper and parvo and rabies....boratella as needed.

Rabies

February 9 2009, 3:25 PM

There has been a LOT of controversy over this. I understand there is no proof that the rabies actually does last three years. In high rabies prone areas the vets usually give one year. My new vet said to go to three years so I did, but I can request 1 year if I want.

I do the same as Julie with shots and yearly I do Bordatella and Lyme.

We do have a lot of wildlife around so ill see what her ideas are on the 3 yr. she might not have it at all. there were about 12 turkeys in the woods behind our house last weekend and cora was going wild she was so frustrated she couldn't just chase them like a happy dog haha

If Dr. Dodds is involved, I'll listen! happy.gif

I skipped Lyme's this year, and think I'll keep skipping it. I was behind on distemper, which I had no idea, so we'll do that here in a couple weeks.

We had a raccoon ........

February 9 2009, 5:18 PM

in our old backyard that had distemper...........after seeing that I would never go without that shot..........it was horrible.
You didn't start anything.........everyone does what they think best for their own dogs.......just like everything else in life:) It is good to get feedback so you can have alot of different opinions.

Yikes! Yes, we will be getting that one. I called the vet, and he is over-due. I wish they sent out reminder cards or something, geesh!

I titer test my dogs for

February 9 2009, 9:46 PM

distemper and parvo and all three of mine were fine. My youngest bulldog only had her 3 sets of puppy shots and then at 2 was titer tested and she didn't need to be vaccinated. Since you don't like vaccines it may be worth doing a titer test.

I've head of that, but how do you do it?

February 9 2009, 9:57 PM

I know I can find it on-line somewhere, but I like to know what "real" people do happy.gif

It's just a blood test that your vet does.

February 9 2009, 10:00 PM

They send it out and it measures how much antibodies are in the bloodstream. It cost about $90 here but to me it's worth it not to have to vaccinate. I would almost bet that Mikko would be covered.
