Ticks!

I found a tick on Jezzibelle today and got it out...(Thank God!) I don't use any of the flea or tick applications and won't.  I just can't put pesticides on them...especially since Jezzibelle had cancer last year. We don't have fleas or at least in 16 years they have never had them.

My question is what kind of natural remedies or perventative additives are there that people use.  I know I have heard of things but can't remember any of the names.  I am on my way to the natural store in hopes of finding something.   If  any of you can tell me I would appreciate it so much!

UGH

Well as you know I am having a horrible time with fleas and seems that our entire state is having a huge problem!

I recently bought this flea spray and shampoo called De Flea and it claimed to be all natural and not have any pesticides in it and it does work!I used the shampoo on Hana and I could see the fleas dropping off her out of her fur.

The other thing I would suggest is a the nematodes. JB used to swear by this product.

I am not sure if this works for ticks but would assume so.

Did you get the tick out? Jim was in the army so he learned how to get ticks out and when we use to vacation with the dogs at that bungalow on the beach they got a couple ticks and Jim would light a match then blow it out and hit the tip of their ass with the hot match and they would back out head and all.If you try and pulle them out you can leave their heads in them.

I have heard

May 6 2009, 6:39 PM

about the match technique but YES  I pulled it out.......Stupid... but I was in a panic state.  I did get the whole thing and it was already dead.    I took her to the vet last year because after she had one(which she got over in central Oregon) her lymph node became enlarged.

Nematodes are the most numerous multicellular animals on earth. A handful of soil will contain thousands of the microscopic worms, many of them parasites of insects, plants or animals. Free-living species are abundant, including nematodes that feed on bacteria, fungi, and other nematodes, yet the vast majority of species encountered are poorly understood biologically. There are nearly 20,000 described species classified in the phylum Nemata .

Your yard

May 6 2009, 10:40 PM

Do you have any areas of tall grasses in your yard? That's prime tick habitat. If so, cutting it down might keep the ticks out of the yard. I got nuthin for ya natural that I know works, but I do know of a few things that people try. Nature's Farmacy makes an all-natural product called Flea Flee that's made of essential oils.
http://www.naturesfarmacy.com/store/details.php?prodId=102&category=

I've heard about diatomaceous earth for pest control before, but idk at all if it works.
That's all I got sad.gif

We use "Bug Off" by Springtime

May 7 2009, 10:59 AM

It's garlic, which scares some people, but many dogs in the MARS group use it, it works great, and we've never heard of a problem. It does take some time to build up in their system though.

One of my friends, has 3 of her Akitas on Bug Off (http://www.springtimeinc.com/), and they haven't had any ticks, but her one boy is on Frontline, because he can't be on the garlic (allergies), and he's had HORRIBLE tick problems already this year.

I just ordered some stuff for Mikko's allergies from this place: www.onlynaturalpet.com

They could have something for you too.

Frontline is not the best for ticks

May 7 2009, 11:07 AM

It kills them, but only after they have been attached for a while. It doesnt repel them from the get go. People who have field dogs that use frontline also use a permethrin spray to keep the ticks off. Vectra 3D has permethrin in it, which is why I used that for tick-infested areas where I used to live. I think Advantix/Advantage Multi also repels ticks, but im not 100% on that. Not sure about Promeris. I also hear that tick collars work well, but I havent tried that, and in all honesty, if they were that awesome, the pointer folks would use them in the field and they generally dont.

WOW!

May 7 2009, 6:22 PM

I wonder what kind of tick.............when I was young I found a dog in Palm Springs that had over 50 ticks on him.  I drove him home 2 hours to my house and picked every one out of him.  I found him a new home but I was too young to be grossed out by them..LOL!

He never was sick.........must be different kinds???

Vinegar????

May 7 2009, 1:15 PM

Florida is really having a bad flea situation right now and there was an article in the paper about putting vinegar in your dogs water to repel fleas. Has anybody heard of this and does anybody know what vinegar does to repel fleas? Sorta sounds like one of those wasting your time type of home remedies to me.

I never heard this one.

Kathy

A girl on another group....

May 8 2009, 1:04 PM

Had an Akita that is allergic to tons of stuff, and couldn't do the vinegar, because it causes mold (??), and her girl is allergic to all types of mold.
