Response to Northrop-Grumman/EADS Wins Tanker Competition!

the armed forces get the best equipment to do the job, and I doubt collective nit-picking by a bunch of lawyers and politicians will improve the situation. This decision should be made on the basis of operational requirements and engineering information, not pork barrel politics.

Granted the KC-135's have been very well maintained,re-engined etc., but the airframes are now pushing 40-50 years old and the designers cannot have ever envisaged that the operational life of the airframe would be so long.
We must now be starting to find out about fatigue and failure modes as we go.

I think the crews are entitled to expect to fly in something somewhat younger than themselves.
