Mystery aircraft challenge with clues

See if you can figure this one out. During World War Two, my father helped build quite a few of this type of aircraft. Clue number one is that the construction was quite similar to a WWI Fokker D.VII as it had a welded steel tubular fuselage, steel framed tail section, wing constructed from wood, and all this covered with fabric. Clue #2 is that it was not German. Clue #3 is that it had a type of Deperdussin control in that there was a sprocket gear mounted on the steering wheel shaft. A bicycle type chain fit over this sprocket and the ends of the chain were connected to control cables. Clue #5 is that it did have a pilot, co-pilot, and passengers. Clue #6 makes this one really unique as it was the only WWII aircraft that used balsa wood for the wing root fillets.
