Arming a P-47 Thunderbolt

I am interested in finally putting to use some aftermarket gunbay pieces and figures that I've had for years. Hopefully some answers to things I've never given thought to can be provided by more informed modelers than myself.

1. Were the gun barrels inserted in the polished blast tubes that protruded from the leading edge of the wing i.e. if I do a diorama with groundcrew inserting the machine guns should the blast tubes be in place or were they put on after the gun/gun barrels were in place? Surely those polished blast tubes were not the gun barrels (why would they be called blast tubes...or whatever was the offical name)!

2. Would the aircraft lack ammunition until the guns were in place i.e would I have to use empty ammunition bays if the the diorama figures shown were inserting the guns?

3. I take it the guns would always be sighted after installation i.e. it would not be realistic to have the aircraft sitting at a normal parked angle while the guns were being installed, but the tail would be jacked up as is often seen in photos when guns are being bore sighted?

Maybe I'm better off just having the figures loading the ammunition as is seen in that well known colour photo of Gabreski's P-47!

Hoping for some insight.
