Response to Whatever happened to the good old fashioned hobby shops?

There are perhaps some shops that stay open because the shop owner enjoys the life style and doesn't care or need to care about how much the store brings in. And there are some that make it because the combination of business acumen, demographics and good luck. Most of them are going under because they don't make enough money, or a variant on that: they do fine but the owner is working too hard and decides he can do better in another line of work. I've seen both around here. It's not helped by mall owners demanding very high rents in order to amortize the real bad deals they managed to inflict on themselves during the crazy real estate financing, or the shop that went under because the city decided to redevelop him out of business, replacing his business with...a very large vacant lot. That brings in a lot of sales tax revenue.

The Internet has a lot to do with it, but it's not the only problem--some of these folks would have had to cave anyway because of the economy and because of forces that even the best businessman cannot control.
