Sorry Edgar, but Crosley's theory is nonsense.

Response to I'd forgotten the bobweight ("inertia weight" in Vickers parlance,) which was fitted into

If it were true then all those poor pilots would have gotten very tired flying missions while having to push against the weight of the bob-weight all the time. Once there was a bit of airspeed on, which was likely to be the case even when bailing out, aerodynamics would be much more significant than a few pounds weight.

Also, I don't follow the reasoning that the weight attached directly to the stick would make it come aft when released (on the ground). If the weight was there to counteract the tendency to "pull up" too sharply, potentially overstressing the airframe, wouldn't it have to act to push the stick forward? That's what it was for, not to assist in dive pull-outs by helping to pull up.

Even without bob-weights fitted "regular" Spits tended to have the trailing edge of the elevators "fall" down. Exactly why this is so I do not know- it isn't (purely) because of Modeldad's theory of rigorously followed procedure. As for Seafire 47s, last time I looked at photo evidence I don't remember seeing a predictable pattern, but I'll have to have another look.
