Response to How Come...

Sometimes we forget how total the defeat of the axis was in some ways. For example, I recall seeing a stat that of the 28,000 German fighter pilots to see service in WWII, 1400 were around to see the end. I have a feeling the Japanese did not do any better. The Tainan wing returned from PNG in early 43 with about a half dozen original members if I remember correctly. If you look at the records for PNG, 68th and 77th Sentai were wiped out. Literally. To a man. What few surviving aircrew were around by 44 got to be infantry in a series of losing battles. Look at the losses for Midway and the Marianas and the Phillipines. Bear in mind that unlike the Allies, the axis powers did not send people home to be instructors as a matter of policy and you can see the window for survival was very slim.

Also, the Japanese were not as camera happy as the Germans. Throw in the fact that many records and photos went down with the ships, log books were burned by the pilots and records were destroyed wholesale at the end of the war by the Japanese command and it becomes a bit more understandable why records, photos etc are not really available.

This is the reason why there is very little info. I do agree that the Coral Sea battle is no where near as studied and analyzed as Midway or most of the others. New Georgia is another "lost battle" as well.
