I want to model an SBD-2 kit. I have the 1/48 Accurate Miniatures Midway SBD-2 release. Upon review of the parts I noticed some weird things.
First, it came with the propeller sprue of an SBD-4/5. This sprue is not mentioned in the instructions. The propeller has a different spinner than the instructions. I am sure this must be simple goof, but I do not know if everyone else who has this kit had the same issue.
Second, the sprue that has the cowling carburetor scoop has the larger scoop of the SBD-1.
Third, the same sprue correctly has the fuselage with the single .30 gun and the single top door for the gun. However, the forward fuselage parts (17L & 17R) match that of the SBD-3 and SBD-4.
Stay with me here It is my understanding that:
A) The SBD-2 did not have the larger carburetor intake/scoop of the SBD-1. It was like the SBD-3/4
B) The SBD-1 and SBD-2 had the same forward fuselage (aft of the cowling, in front of the windscreen) but, not that of the SBD-3/4. The SBD-1/2 had a longer vertical vent. (I am aware that this was different for the SBD-5/6).
I do not have access to my squadron and detail in scale books, so can anyone confirm the following:
· The SBD-2 was externally identical to the SBD-1, except for having the same carburetor/scoop as the SBD-3/4. (what few SBD-2 images I found on the net support this)
· That the SBD-1 and SBD-2 had a different forward fuselage than the SBD-3 and SBD-4.
Does anyone have the SBD-1 and the SBD-3/4 kits? If so, are parts 17L and 17R identical in both kits? I do not know if Accurate Miniatures used a different forward fuselage on the SBD-1 or they simply used the same one as the SBD-3/4.
From what I have, I would have raid another SBD kit for the prop sprue and the upper cowling part, and possibly an SBD-1 kit if AM depicted the different forward fuselage parts.
